Noob help needed: quick question

I had a mechanic look at my 125 Hyosung dirtbike and he mentioned that the chain has "thight spots" and needs replacement soon. Now to my naive ears this could mean several things:

- the chain is gonna snap next time i dare to turn her on and rip the engine into pieces.
- the chain is gonna snap next time i dare to turn her on but thats alright.
- the chain is likely to last a few more hours and will eventually quietly "come off"
- chains last for ever and there might be something wrong with the rest of the bike.
- dont worry about it you can still ride it but its not got for her.

The chances of a primary drive chain snaping is slim... very slim basicall just means there is wear and tear on the sprokets and they just simply need replacing soon... if the sprockets wears to low there is a chance of chain slipping.

Tight spots can be caused by couple of things, sprocket loosing its shape, chain overal set to tight...

The chains and sprockets don't last forever and depend on the bike and style of the bike require replacing after a while... I don't know how much they are for your ride.

More importantly is how worn is the chain? The best check in my view is pull at your chain at the back of the back sprocket i.e. horizontally away from the axle - if the chain can be pulled out as far as the edge of the sprocket teeth then its buggered.

Turn the wheel and check it a few times. A tight spot really means its the opposite of the worn spots. Can you still adjust the chain so at its tightest you set it at the right freeplay while at its loosest its not more than say 10mm more freeplay - now we are talking the free play in the centre of the run of the chain between the front and back sprockets.

How old is the bike and how many kms has it done? I'd expect your chain to last a few years.

WTF where do you get this advice from. Who mentioned a primary chain, rear chains wear faster on a dirt bike. If it was a road bike you would replace chains and sprockets together. Probably just needed more maintence. Soak in kero and then oil it up heaps if you want to do it on the cheap. Or ride it till its stuffed.

The chain in it's present state will
a. possibly fall off, if there's enough slack.
b. and more importantly rob you of horsepower.

You could remove it, and clean, soak and massage every link, if you're on the dole or scottish. I'm not scottish, so I must be on the dole.

I'd add to the pull the chain back advice that if you can pull it out half a tooth it's goosed. And replace chain and sprockets together, doing one half is just going to wear out the new bits faster.
