had my first highside today :( out on scenic drive, hit some bumps on a lefthander and unsettled the bike.. I straightened ever so slightly, then though to myself "you are going a bit too quick here..." so the predictable happened - pulled the front brake instead of dropping in further, ran off the road into some gravel, bike dug in to the ground, flipped over me (i think - my memory is a bit hazy at the moment) and landed quite hard on the right hand side... I was doing maybe 80 into the corner, and probably 40 when i left the road.
Have been taking off all the extraneous plastic shit - who needs it anyway? all it does is cost money to fix :pinch: - and compiled a list of the damage: cracked blade, broken engine mount, bend handle bar, broken brake lever, rooted top fairing - cracked all along the pervious plastic welds :( and other little bends and tweaks here and there.
So I am without an operational bike for the next little while :crybaby: Still, hopefully I am the wiser for the happenings, and i feel my subconcious going through the events, and re-evaluating the decisions that I made, what I could have done better etc (note to self - next time, go round corner ;) )
Still feeling a bit light headed from shock i guess, and it is quite hard to concentrate on typing correctly, but other than that, I cant discern any damage to my person :2thumbsup Maybe i will be a bit sore tomorrow morning though....

Finally, big ups to logo aka KK aka real great guy for lending me a hand in getting the bike home again with minimal fuss. You are a legend mate :niceone:

Not many of us are in here. Just so long the climax is not to painfull. Just remember next time you're into the bend make sure you don't get a load of the clap. Can be expensive and on occassions terminal.

Good to hear you're ok and can't wait to get back into it.

Ohhh yeah.... tomorrow will tell, so I recomend a bloody hot as bath. Glad that ya not too badly beaten up.
I still remember my 'first' was on a CX500 euro comming down from the sign of the kiwi (Chch steep left hander before church by park for those that know the area) the ass came around side on then the bitch lunched me in a big way, and I can still see the bike above me up side down as I landed on my back, and still buggered if I can work out why it happened it was a insurance job and it never felt right again so I sold it.

That's tough man,she was lookin too good anyway - being a young fulla you should be fine tomorrow,at my age it hurts for a week, lucky you didn't do the collar bone - standard on a highside. The Senic Drive can hold a few surprises alright, one time I hit some nasty bumps that flexed a Featherbed Norton enough to throw a chain.

Hey Milky - good to see your report, shaede could compare instantly with it as could i from previous experiences! It just happens dude, dont get down over it (you dont sound to be, but shit i did/do!) and your riding will be all the more cautious when you do get back - but thats kool, you can work on the things you would have been thinking about all the time you go without a bike :)
Dude give us a yell on the phone or something and you can have my VFR400 for as long as you need! - reliable, no fairings to smash, and i have shitloads of bits if it was dropped so no worries about that shit! and in the mean time i have the ZX6 so all is good.
Take it easy man!

Apart from anything else shows the benefits of experience,Milky knows he should have left the front brake alone, bit more time on the road and he`d have got himself out of the situation without even thinking about it.Blew my nieces mind the other day, took her and her b/f into town for something to eat, turned and knocked a fork off of the table with my elbow while talking to her ,caught it before it hit the deck without even breaking the conversation, told her that`s the kind of reflexes you get after nearly 30 years of biking.Didn`t even think about it,just did it,same as I`ve got myself out of the shit so many times on the road.Get yourself back on the road soon Milky, how about streetfightering it like the brits do?slap on some dirt bars, couple of lights up front and you`ve got yourself a mean hot-rod.

Glad your okay Milky, sounds like you have a good attitude to the bin, they are always learning events, bikes can be fixed easier than people, so its all good , and yeah good you had a mate like :first: Logan :first: to help you get it sorted.

Hope your back on the bike as soon as.

Ouch. Glad you're in one piece.

Going quick along Scenic Drive always gives me the heebie-jeebies. It'd be a great road if they smoothed out the bumps and cleaned all the algae off.

Quite suprisingly, I am not too sore this morning :niceone: It was one of those stupid, I've been told what to do here, but i really really cant bring myself to actually go ahead and do it moments. On reflection it seems that the first problem was looking at the bumps as I was going round the corner, and I just sailed directly to where I was looking :( It takes quite a force of will to not look at the things that scare/worry you, and instead concentrate on where you want to go...
Enough from me though, time to get on the pushbike and cycle through the rain, fumes and mad drivers to get to uni :msn-wink:

Glad you're OK, Milky.

You're quite right about "force of will", especially where there's a crappy surface to check out. My commute each day has some greasy, off-camber right-angle corners, and most days I cock them up because I have to check the surface for grip etc. instead of letting my tyres sort it out. I guess with these corners it's become a habit, as I don't usually do it (just look right through the corner), but I'm scared I'm going to lose it. It's very rare that I can just look ahead and go for it.
It doesn't help that my first crash in D'Auckland was from losing it turning down a side street, when my front tyre hit a squashed drink can at exactly the wrong moment, and I lowsided. Heavily. Didn't even see the can till I was picking the pieces of bike up. Since then, I usually do a quick scan of the surface of corners before looking through the corner. Except on the aforementioned greasy, off-camber, right-angled bastids, dammit.

Hope your ride gets fixed soonest.

You`re right there, one of the things riders on advanced courses get told here is you`ll end up where you`re looking, cos where you`re looking is where your bikes heading for so,hard as it is until you get used to it you look where you want to go,that way as well you`re thinking ahead and focussing on that bit of road, taking in any hazards e.t.c. rather than barrelling along and wondering why you`ve suddenly hit something nasty.Big,big thing to learn on any bike is how to relax, that comes with experience,if you`re tensed up then you`ll over-react and your riding wont be as smooth as it should be.Best thing to do is forget about speed for a bit,o.k. it`s fun but take it easy, relax and get used to looking ahead, concentrate on improving your riding then build your speed up,you`ll be a lot better equipped to handle the un-expected,in fact you`ll find a lot less un-expected to deal with in the first place.

That is something I have been getting better at over the last month or so of having the zxr - relaxing on the bike and not tensing into corners... It was starting to happen more in the past week or so too :confused2 now it is back to square one...

one thing mountain bikers do is scan through the section of track they are approaching but not pause or focus on hazards and the mind will sort out where to put the bike but as soon as you try to pick a path through you will fall off or slow down.

Here you go milky, this is a typical European Streetfighter, get yourself a pair of shades, black open face helmet or black full-face with black visor,ex-army jacket of any kind to wear over your leather jacket, practice the "stare straight ahead without moving any facial muscles" look at the lights and you`ve got yourself the Euro bad-ass look. The guy that designed the latest Z1000 said he took the Streetfighter style as inspiration.

Well i went and looked at Milky's bike, not as bad as i thought it was going to be, mainly minor stuff..... The only really rooted thing is the top fairing which will have to be replaced, but in the mean time we made some brakets and attatched the light so the ZXR is now a street fighter, and i have to say it looks awesome lol.....

Bummer man, sounds like you did pretty much the same as what I did on a KB ride not very long ago!

Good to hear you're ok, I still have a huge lump on my shoulder where the ligament is torn :crybaby:, but the bike went back together pretty easy.
Hope your discs aren't bent like mine, cos it looks like they're going to be the most expensive part!
