Those of you that go to Auckland University....

Im enrolled at the epsom campas and i've been avoiding the city campas, because its too confusing and i always get lost whenever i try to get there, and when i do get there i get lost inside!

Just found out my summer school paper is at the city campas and not the epsom campus!! arrrggghhh!!! that really sucks...

Anyway I need to find my Class: ARTS 206

first of all, Drunken Monkey is living up to his name... thats the student bar

Arts 206 would be in the Arts building, on your map... Level 2, room 6... What do you know on the map, from there, I can guide you...

Hi Dan,

THe ARTS building is on Symonds Street and is behind the 3 old style Politics buildings that are on the street front, there are pathways to get behind them, If walking down from Alfred St. and you hit the HSB building you have gone too far.

Room 206 I think is one level BELOW ground level so go down one flight of stairs. You should be able to find the ARTS building on the map you can download from the uni website. Follow this link http://www.auckland.ac.nz/uoa/about/uoa/campuses/home.cfm#City

Good luck :)

This is a serious post though, I actually have great dificulty getting to the city campus. Lucky for me I have only needed to go to the clock tower place 2-3 times and once I had to find the SJS office... that took me 3 hours to find!

I can find anyplace in the Epsom campas though!! Nice and small and easy to find there!

Hate the city campus! Its too big!!

I need to find the ARTs block? is there only one? Where is ARTS 206????

Disco Dan

OK, im looking at the attached map....

I can get to the clock tower (top left of map). I know there is motorbike parking outside it.

Should i go down wynyard street and park down there somewhere?

Gremlin
3rd January 2007, 17:15
yeee gads man.

1. Park on Alfred Street.
2. Walk down Alfred Street, and cross Symonds Street (according to your map, to Commerce C)
3. Once across, there will be a little paved section, walk to that, and go to the left, and you will find stairs going down.
4. Take them, and at the bottom, go left.
5. You will walk under a walkway. Stop.
6. Turn to your right, and notice a door near you (not the one leading into the building)
7. Take the small door, it only has a set of stairs behind it.
8. This will put you on level 2, from there, you need to locate room 6. All rooms have numbers on them, and funnily enough, numbered consecutively.

Hows that?

edit...there is hidden bike parking off wynard street, which can be only accessed from the north end, via Alten Rd
edit2 there is no official bike parking right outside clocktower, unless that has changed

First - don't panic :)

Also at the start of the year their are usually a load of helpers wandering around with "Ask me" shirts on that you can stop and ask for directions.

You will be fine just arive at Uni in plenty of time to have a look. Honestly it's not too hard.

Whatever you do , do NOT accidentally turn left. If you are so ill omened as to do so, you will find another door, similar to the one you would have found had you turned right. DO NOT GO THROUGH THAT DOOR. AND DO NOT ASK WHY. JUST DON'T DO IT. (But, if you do, can I have your bike, since you won't be using it any more?)

So is that clear? Don't turn right, and make sure you go through the right door.

(EDIT: There may be no bike parking nowdays outside the clock tower. But the challenge still stands, to start outside the clock tower in Princes St, ride UP the steps, DOWN the internal stairs, out the lower back doors, into the cloisters, down the stairs and across to Alfred St, and back up to Princes St. It has been done. )

hmmmm pity I don't think I could ride through the clocktower on the 7... someone got something a bit lighter, with more steering? :devil2:

Ixion
3rd January 2007, 19:49
You are quite right, I should not have spoken of THAT. Let us all take note, there IS NO door to the left, none at all. Nope, none. Just as said, a tunnel to the light, no door to the darkness.

Just remember not to turn right.

By the way, you must bear in mind that all the left, right etc instructions are on the assumption that you are approaching FROM THE NORTH. If that be not so, obviously you must reverse left and right.

I HAVE RETURNED!

...well after taking a wrong turn off the motorway I turned back, turned right after I passed the police operations carpark (on my left) and ended up in broadway (saw a gpx250 on the side of the road, and some yellow thing in broadway too). Turned back, went all the way back to where i got off the mway, saw a sign saying University (despite pointing opposite direction to what my map was telling me). Somehow (sheer luck) ended up on Princes street, turned left onto Alfred street then right onto symonds. Stopped again to check map. Lost still. Some passer-by approached me and offered to help... turned my map around the other way and sent me back down the road. Turn right onto Alten Road, and ended up at mway again. Turned back and found Wynyard Street, and despite being a construction zone and very very pot hole ridden gravely stuff I braved it to the end. Found the building, although no doors, just a small sign saying "arts". Hmmpf. found a small walkway down the side of the building, went up it. Ended up on Symonds street again. This time I parked up and continued on foot to find the entrance. Found a stair well with a "arts" sign affixed. Triumphant, I returned to my bike. Trying to think of the fastest way back to the mway, I decided to turn right onto Wellesley Street, then right again onto Princes, down to Bowen on my left and over the ridge to queen street. Followed that too the end and turn right onto K-Road, and then left at the gas station to see the mway on my right.

Tomorrow is going to be bloody entertaining....

Tell me about it!!! I had to go to all these different rooms (which were open at very specific times on certain days), sit "exams" and get a "degree". Once I had the "degree" I had to set off on another quest, to find the "real world".

They should turn it into a game... same sort of quest format really, with obstacles called "lecturers" along the way :shit:

Ok tonight get your map book out..... look at the easiest route there.... then highlight the roads in a coloured marker.....

Use that route to get you there....
It shouldnt take that long to get to Symonds street......

You go off at Newton Rd Gully off ramp...... (set of lights) turn right.......go over bridge (which is over the motorway) another set of lights, go up the hill..... at the top (set of lights) Turn left into Symonds Street....follow that...... you will get to the uni from that direction.

I've seen that NW motorway of yours in rush hour, you'll have to lane split like mad. But y' can't go wrong, Newton Rd off ramp is y'r best bet I reckon, then just wiggle around a bit, and you should end up in Symonds St, just below where Partington's Windmill used to be before they tore it down. Or in Wakefield st, opposite the pub (not sure if that's still there, but it jolly well ought to be), Then hang a left (or two, if necessary), Down toward Anzac Ave (I never did quite figure out where Anzac Ave becomes Symonds St, but anyway, one or other), and Bob's y'r Mummy's special friend. If you get to the Supreme Court ('tisn't that any more, mind, which is no loss, it was a shithole of a place. Is no better now, and infested by raving idiots), you've gone too far.

Now, I defy anyone to come up with clearer, simpler, more explicit directions than that.

Whenever I go to the city I always get off next to that big giant porcupine thing. Go down the hill, turn a right (not sure of road names) and end up passing sky tower on my right, then I reach Queen Street. Then from that point i can either get to:

Mission Bay, K-Road, Real Groovy, Cinema, and now princes street via some weird combination of one-way roads and path through the park.

Ive tried other ways and I get lost... broadway is a common place for me to end up, so is ponsonby. Whenever I get lost I will be at one of those places.

Anzac becomes err.. anzac, at intersection of symonds and alten... and the other road (sheesh, I'm almost as bad). Would "wiggle" be a special kind of direction, and when would I use it?

If you're coming to the City Campus via the North-western motorway just follow the Port exit signs which will take you through the city to Stanley Street. At the first set of traffic lights turn left up Alten Road, then left onto Symonds Street. Park bike. Go to lecture. Return to bike. Go up Symonds Street, turn left at traffic lights down Grafton Road. Follow signs to Northwestern motorway. Note that the right-hand lane on the North-western connecting link now goes across the harbour bridge! But don't worry, you can turn around and head back into the city at the Onewa Road (c/- Ixion) interchange! :devil2:

I spent quite a few years wobbling round there, a good bit of it subterranean. But they have a whole heap of buildings now that weren't there then, and the ones that were there aren't now.

But its all good cos I know where they used to be, and I just ignore the new shit. and its gotten all boring now, I was up there a while back at the Student Union for nearly a whole afternoon and noone got arrested at all.

Only new bit thats good is the grad bar, thats a nice place.

No you can't if you mean the Akorana drive interchange , or whatever its called - the one where the enormous blackberry patch used to be before they built the motorway.

You can loop back at Onewa Rd, though I think it's a bit illegal but I regulalrly see cops doing it.

Or you could get off by the old Harbour Bridge Authority Building, (its something else now), and ride through the secret underpass to the other side, then jiggle higgle round a bit of fence and you're back on the motorway going south. Assuming the secret underpass is still there, I must check that, there'll be trouble if it's not, that was one of the conditions for allowing the bridge to be built, if they've blocked the underpass they'll have to pull the bridge down.

Thats good, You realise that roads always look totally different by daylight to what they look at night.

Yes, there are tunnels. A whole town in fact, chambers and rooms and so on. But the miserable buggers have blocked off the entrances now. Never saw anything interesting in them, the ones in North head were better.

Well I meet Disco Dan at Westgate......
He managed to find that ok......

I lead him all the way up to Symonds Street and we waited there for Gremlin to arrive on Symonds St/ Newton Rd.

So there we are waiting and we spot this biker on a green bike shoot throu the lights... I thought it couldnt be....... so we waited and waited....... I went for a wander and there was Gremlin waiting down in Newton Rd...

Yikes we have two that dont follow instructions that good.....

So we decided that Gremlin should lead the way as he knows the uni better than us two.....

So off we go and down Symonds St we tootle...
Gremlin showed DD where to park once we got over that gravel patch....
Then shows him the other place to park outside the Maidenment Theatre...
Off we wander........DD showing us the way.....via the written instructions..
Yes he almost got us LOST..... Read it properly young fella.

After all that we decided that DD should lead us out of the city back to the motorway.... he tells us which way..... and then at a set of lights as I say about continue up over K'Rd to upper Queen Street to Newton Rd... he changes his mind we are going another way.... Up Hobson Rd.....

So I assume he has made it home as I left him on his travels as I got off at Te Atatu.

So DD, on the 6th off ramp (Newton Rd) get off the nor western motorway..... up Newton Rd to Symonds set of lights. .... turn left in Symonds St....... to.................. next bit your on your own.... hehehehe.

EDIT: for those interested in the tunnels: http://local.wasp.uwa.edu.au/~pbourke/other/albert/journey.html (http://local.wasp.uwa.edu.au/%7Epbourke/other/albert/journey.html)

That map (and account) just covers the little end bit.

This map http://local.wasp.uwa.edu.au/~pbourke/other/albert/overall.html (http://local.wasp.uwa.edu.au/%7Epbourke/other/albert/overall.html)

shows the complete 1941 tunnel layout. But what is not always realised is that the 1941 tunnels are not the whole story, because the 1941 work incorporated a lot of excavation that they found, which dated to the days when the park was a barracks. There were 19th century underground bunkers, bombproof shelters , ammo stores , armouries etc. A lot of the underground stuff was incorporated in the 1941 work

Years ago, if you knew where the entrance was (before a lot of bloody Grundys had it sealed up) you could wander round quite happily in there , albeit with a little care .Of course, then it was not so very old, the old (19C) work was in quite good nick though.

Those may have been my beer bottles, it was a good place for a drinking session.

The ones at North head were better though.

Latest Development folks:

Had to borrow my sisters little girly suzuki car and head back to the city campas this arvo... forgot to pick up my readings...

Well I make it to the clock tower using my new learnt directions. Need to find the "fischer building". Thoughts of "Carrie Fischer" and "star wars" fill my head. Find the big map on the side of the road, after 20 minutes im satisfied i know exactly where to go.

Hour and a half later and 3 visits to the same map, I realise ive been going up and down the wrong streets. Off I go again, this time I see the building and just about get rear ended by a bus when i slam on the brakes and swerve onto the median strip. go down this very very steep and twisty driveway with bits of gravel and other 'slippy' stuff. Start thinking how thankful I am not to be on my bike for this part! Walk all the way up the driveway to the road and find the front gate, up the lift. 10th floor. so far so good.

"that will be $10 please"
"Are you fucken serious? Ive just spent the last 3 hours looking for this dam place!"
"three hours?"
"Ive only got eftpos, your going to tell me cash only arnt you?"
"err yeah fraid so.."
(arrrgggggghhhhh!!!!!)
"right, well its five to four. I'll run off and find an atm, not like your closing in 5 mins ay? hehe"
"well actually... we do.."
"look mate, im trying to be calm here... ive paid thousands of dollars worth of fee's to study here, whats $10 ay?"
"just take it, come pay another time" (hint hint)
"cheers dude"

Make a quick exit, down the lift to the ground floor. Lift opens right next to my car. FAAAARRRRKK..... why did I not see that when I got here!!!

....Just got home.

Psahw. There was a dude in a wheel chair when I was there. He got down the stairs just fine (bloody fast too, though the stop at the botom was sometimes a bit abrupt). And to get up he just commandeered a few of us to carry the chair, with him in it , up the stairs. Worked fine. Soft, nowdays.

That is how almost all of my rides are done. Just tottle out in a vague general direction, and take the first (or second, or third) interesting looking road, keep just randomly turning onto new roads, or generally head toward some distant mountain. With a vague impression that one might like to end up in Xville, though one very seldom does.

'tis amazing where one ends up.

Fortunately, as I have noted in this thread, I have an excellent sense of direction, so I never actually get lost.
