View Full Version : The going rate

The missus has been offered a part-time shop job. She'll be expected to open, sell, do stock control and close the shop, unsupervised, two days a week. She's been told that the going rate where we are (Wanaka) is $14/hr.

My stock response in any such situation is to say "thanks, I'll have a think about it" and then ask later if the rate is negotiable, because those who don't ask never get. But I don't know whether $14/hr really is the going rate, or if it's a low-ball offer given to a couple of wet-eared rubes like us. It is a sight over minimum wage.

I suspect that there's a lot of variation across these fair isles, but can anyone offer advice?

TIA.

It may be OK in Wanaka. Retail doesn't pay well. I wouldn't do it for that thought.

Depends on how much she/you both want/need the job/income. $14/hr is on the low side for what is essentially a position of respeonsibility.

I know an awefull lot of people that are earning less than that.
Wages in this neck of the woods are just terrible.

It sounds right, that's a $12 or $13 an hour job in Dunedin, the extra dollar I guess is for the Wanaka tight labour market.

Welcome to Central Otago: Yes that is actually generous for Central. That's the downside to living in paradise. Wages down here are generally 10 - 20% less thyan for a similar job in the North Island.

yeh $14hr is quite good, before i got put on salary, the highest i went was $22hr, but 98% of my work was about $10-12hr

Id say that $14 start rate is quite reasonable for retail. When I first started working for the bank 7 or so years ago I was paid alot less and had to work 9-10 hour days. Had to load the ATM with $$ and balance my own cash drawer, which until balanced we couldnt go home plus lots of other duties.... Maybe she could try and negotiate the wage or maybe she could just take the job but still look out for better paying ones.

I wish I got that much. I work 50+ hours a week and I am on far less than that.

Can't be too much less. Minimum wage is about $9:50 innit?

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I think the missus was fairly set on the job anyway, so she chanced her arm a little before I'd got back to her with this lot and wangled a little extra. Sounds like she's not getting such a bad deal.

Consider the going rate for a level 1 manager at McDs in Christchurch, is about 12.75 and your expected to be available 24/7

Its a cunt of a job, and your pay only really goes up with the minimum wage.

Take the 14 an hour, if you dont, hell I will move down to Wanaka and take it for myself ;)

On a side note, does anyone know of any job going for someone in Christchurch. Full time, and can work everyday but Saturday (can do Saturday evenings though).

Around $10.25 is minimum wage for an adult. So $14 is well above minimum wage. I am picking you are over 18?

In my retail operation $21.32 p.h is paid to the Manager who has full responsibility, $16.00 to the "junior" and a further $3.00 p.h when junior is in "charge" for 4 hours or more (when manager is on holiday / sick leave / every second saturday).

$14.00 is not to bad for a 2 day a week job.

Just focus on the payoff at the end of it all.

Its easer to find a job when you have one, any responsibility can be spun to your/her advantage in a C.V later on.
Pat on the back for getting out there and getting herself into a place to be offered the job in the fist place.
Money is money

Yep. $14 an hour seems alright for that....even if there is a level of responsiblilty.

I am reassured that I'm not the only working class joe on KB.
For a while everybody on KB seemed to me to have zillion dollar bikes and be highly paid businesspeople from Ponsonby or The Terrace.
