View Full Version : Rear-ended by car

Watch out for idiots in cars that follow too close. Got rear ended yesterday when I stopped to give way at a roundabout. Heard the screeching tyres behind me but could not move forward because I would have got T-boned. It was a sports coupe with a low front so it scooped me up and my rear wheel ended up on the bonnet. Would have been a funny sight for bystanders, but I am most annoyed about this because its happened to me twice now.

See, they are out to get you!!
Seriously, always leave yourself an escape route, it could save your life.
I hope you weren't hurt and that your bike is ok

Bummer. Sometimes there just isn't an escape route available. Best of luck getting back on the road.

Just a couple of bumps on me and the bike looks ok with a few broken bits on the tail and broken gear lever, but was quite a hit so will get the wheel and swingarm checked out. Thanks for the advice by the way. Also got rear ended a couple of months ago when I braked hard at traffic lights to let a few police cars go through. They were in a real hurry and didn't even stop when I got hit right in front of them.

Its not only leaving yourself an escape route but one for the pillock behind you.
Where were you in the middle of lane when he hit you? If you were to one side and he still hit you bad luck, but most of the time if you sit right on the edge of your lane at lights etc it leaves a car sized space to the side of you.

Sorry to hear about your bike, hope you're covered for the repairs!
If I can see a car being a hoon and driving too far up my arse what I do at roundabouts, give ways etc is to pump my brakes a little bit, to try to show them that I am slowing down / could possibly stop.

I still stand by my statement. Not every single situation you will find yourself in on the road will present itself with an escape route. Of course you should always aim to leave one available for yourself or the guy behind you, but that isn't always going to happen.

I hope once the wheel was on the bonnet, you gave it a good burn out!

The only problem with that is it encourages them to pull up next to you. I've had more than a few drivers pull alongside when changing lanes when I haven't dominated my lane space.

Exactly my thought. It does pay to be a good enough rider and driver for every daft arse out there, but sometimes there's no second-guessing, and I'd go for staking my claim on my bit of road, having been forced out of the way by more than enough retards.
A mate of mine playing tail-end-Charlie on a ride out once got left behind. By the time he caught up it was obvious something was up: he was stuck in first gear, engine racing, left rearset flapping in the wind. We'd nipped through some temporary roadworks just as the lights hit amber, he'd been a bit further back and caught the red, slowed to a stop. Thirty seconds later, some dizzy tart comes round the corner, freezes, brakes late and shunts the car straight up the inside of his 6R.
He was completely uninjured and the only damage to the bike was the borked rearset. We stopped and jiggled the box into third and he went home to see how much repairs were going to cost him.
He'd stopped as described previously, good wide right with plenty of safety zone for her to sail past, she just didn't have the wits or the obs. His wide position saved him being rear-ended, but it was luck that she didn't slide six inches wider and punt him straight into oncoming traffic.
Bad luck to the original poster, glad all's well. Now you've got a funny story to tell down the pub: "and there I was, nose down with the rear wheel half way up this gimp's bonnet, revving for all I was worth!"

Glad you are ok mate, happened to me a couple of years ago too, only he hit me pretty hard and I ended up in the roundabout. Always keep your eye on the idiot behind you when stopping and have a place to go if needed, even if that means jump from the bike and leg it to the footpath.
Stay safe

had exactly the same thing happen to me at a set of lights (carbine rd ) , was first in line heard tyres screechirg then bang no room to move forward as cars were turning, wrote off bike and cage, there is not always a escape route

Twice in the last year I've been hit from behind while in my car (sorry for the non bike-related post).
Last time, two weeks ago, it was while I was second in line waiting at a red light. (In my freakin' two month old, new car).
Both times, it was a van that hit me.
Both times, I had zero damage - but left a tow-bar shaped hole in the vans' front plate.
Lessons:
They are all idiots, and they don't just want to hurt riders.
Get a tow bar.

With me it was the car 2 back that didn't stop at the lights.
1 written off Nordwest...

Ha, you would have thought so but I think I got away with that one. I knew I was going to get hit so locked my arms real hard to brace for impact which probably saved my nuts. The tyre mark and big dent on his bonnet combined with a broken fender was a real "shame", not!
Not sure if allowing space on the side for the car to go through is a good idea because getting side swiped would be worse than getting hit from behind. In this case it was a matter of receiving the lesser of 2 evils as the other option was to overrun the roundabout and rely on the oncoming car to stop and if it didn't I would have been in deep kaka and then it would have been my fault for not giving way at a roundabout.
Fortunately I am insured. The car driver wasn't.

I'm with the guys who say dominate your space on the road. At least if you're in the middle of your lane, your bike will receive a lot of the impact not you.
After being rear-ended in the car, I always watch what's coming up behind me while I'm stopped. If I see a car coming, I'll pump my foot brake a couple of times and hope they see my tail light fire up!
Another thing to consider is how close you sit to the intersection. I don't sit on the lines because I've heard so many horror stories about vehicles being shunted into the line of oncoming traffic.

Saw A LOT of asshole tailgating of bikes today while we were cruising in traffic. I mean real bad, literally centimetres from back wheel stuff. Mostly perpetrated by fuckwits in Commodores. What the hell is it with fuckwits in Commodores?

That's why I never sit in traffic queues. Bikes are for lane splitting.
