View Full Version : Wellington: Cruisy ride later today (Sun 7 Jan)

I'm going for a cruisy ride later today and thought I'd post here in case anyone wanted to join me. I'll be leaving Paraparaumu about 4pm and I think the first leg will be over Paekak' Hill, over Haywards, out to Wainui and down the coast road. Then I have two options in mind:
a) Eastbourne, Petone, into town and around the bays, then head home; or
b) Head north and do Blue Mountains Rd (?) and possibly back over the Akatarawas.
I'm not going over the Rimutakas just because I want to go somewhere a bit different.
I'm open to suggestions, and the route will really be made up as I go (so don't plan on meeting me somewhere unless you tell me).
I'll be going at the speed limit (give or take) but if newbies want to join me and want to go slower then that's cool too.
I'll check this thread during the day and post before I leave.

If you want a couple of nuts on the ride .. we are in .. that is Grub and I .... can meet at Pauatahanui ... and take from there ... my preference will always be though to miss the Akas ... I heard its like a goat track .. but the rest sounds great ... good riding experience for me .. and Grub just loves riding :)

The more the merrier... meet at Pauatahanui Challenge Stn would be good - should be about 4:30pm, but I'll confirm that later in the day.

As for the Aka's... I did them once on my FXR and vowed never to do them again, but time has faded my memory and I'm game if someone else is - not keen to go over on my own. I'd be taking it reeeeeaaaallllyyyy ssssllllooooooowwwwllllyyyyy. I've got no set route in mind, though.

I forgot to say... depending on how long the ride turns out to be, stopping for a feed somewhere could be on the cards.

feed always sounds good to me . .since then I don't have to cook ... an added bonus to riding :)

OK, time to get suited up and hit the road (not literally, I hope)...
I'm meeting Nasty and Grub at Pauatahanui at 4:30, but other than that we'll take it as it comes.

What a brilliant night for a ride! Not only us 3 but joined by Paul in NZ and his pillion Vicky and BuckBuck. We met up at Pauatahanui, did Haywards in style, met BuckBuck and tootled off down the motorway to the Petone offramp and from there along the foreshore, over Wainui Hill and out to the coast. It's a long time since I've done that road and it really is worth doing ... again and again and again.

At the carpark at the end we met another couple out there on a Yammy 650 Adventure Bike (and signed up another KBer). Then we were 8. We all left to go to Eastbourne for dinner at the Lifeboat pub/restaurant. The ride home was the long way along the Esplanade, motorway and Haywards again while Paul, Vicky & Hsvboy06 had to do Paekak Hill to get home.

Good people, good ride, good fun - god I like biking. Lesson learned? Keep everyone in sight lest you take a wrong turn.

Brett

Thought I recognised BuckBuck and I'd know Paul's gorgeous Triumph anywhere!

I already had dinner plans, which is why I didn't join you on the ride, but if I'd known you were going to end up at the Lifey...

Nice to hear that you all had a good ride, was a fab evening!

A wonderful ride and ditto all the above, great company, great final destination for a meal, and excellent riding conditions.

Definitely a must do this ride again and Sundays sound good to me.

Just goes to show you never know whose watching - and where were you hiding A_H?

Heads Up and Enjoy

I just like to follow you around, Buck...

Nah - I live in EB so had met my friends at the pub to go to dinner at The Beach in Rimu Street (also very good if you're out that way again) - we left just as you were ordering, but I was in the pub saying to myself "I think that's BUckBuck..."

ANd then when I got outside and saw Paul's bike AND a black GN250 I realised I was right!

Sorry for not stopping over to say Howdy! You probably didn't recognise me in actual (non Cordura) clothes!

Thanks everyone - Vicki and I had a great time and nice to see you all looking so chipper!

After we left the dinner place we took a blat down the Petone foreshore and it was neat to see you guys again on the motorway.

It was a fun afternoon and the timing was perfect - thanks Mr Hsvboy06 - great idea.

I must say though - Is there anything better than a spirited fang home over the hill in the gathering gloom throwing shadows on the hills and the idea of fairies under bridge astride an old bike you know well thruming along under you and your best gal snuggled up tight behind. Bloody great - We carved classic lines through the bends (as you can only do on an old bike) and only the company on the road was the rustle of tappets and the blare from the upswept pipes startling the occasional rabbit.

I swear that if a religion pops up that promises me a heaven full of days like this - I'm in.

Probably in camoflage as well eh? Damned makeup has been confusing us blokes for yonks... Mind you - Happily, I'm easily confused....

I thought i saw your good self, grub, buck buck and a small crew coming off the Haywards hill Rd as I was coming back from a ride with the other half. Did you see the VTZ of doom traveling north with 2 up?

So you made it down from the Tukkas alright on Friday? I live on Aka Rd and trust me it IS the mother of all goat tracks.

Went over the Akas on the Tritanic the other day and it was.... eeeerm.... acceptable. Biggest danger is idiots in cars coming the other way driving too fast and no being prepared to even consider slowing down in places where it is very very tight.

I avoid the road on the Moto guzzi (clip ons, C/R box) but it's OK on the Triumph. Not nice in a yippee lets do that again fashion but OK...

I missed the VTZ of doom ... but was prolly just having too much fun on the virago ... so unobservant really ... hehehe ..

I made it down without anymore issues ... but when I got home after that shifty wind I had to change me pants :)

I went round to Motukaraka Point (to learn to windsurf) and there were a ton of you guys/gals on the road. Even saw you waiting to get going from the Challenge! station... Longingly watching you from afar (or close by)
