on Te Ohaki Rd - how fortunate you were that I aborted my right hand turn (I had my indicator on) and moved the Nissan Laurel I was driving to the left and right off the road so you could complete your passing manouever on a high speed right hand bend.
It's lucky there are some cage drivers out there protecting you....

I doubt they even saw me,I could of turned in front of the car,but then saw the bike passing and decided to get right out of the way. They might not of lived to learn a lesson if I hadn't moved....

100kph,a long sweeping corner past the sewage ponds, coming into a sharper corner and an 80kph zone.It looks like you can see right through the turn, but you can't really,I pass there at night when I can see the lights of oncoming traffic, during the day it's too easy to get it wrong. And cars don't normally turn right where I was....then again there are signs saying ''Trucks Turning''.Just a silly mistake made by someone who doesn't even realise they made a mistake, that's what annoys me so....we can't correct them.

Well dude, here's the bad news.
In a 100kmh zone, vehicles turning right are required by law to pull as far to the left as possible and wait until it is clear to cross the road turning right. It is illegal (for exactly the reason highlighted by the close call) to stop in the middle of the road to turn right.
Not many people know that and even fewer practice it. Not lucky biker, more like lucky you, "Careless Driving Causing Death" is not a good look on your resume. Lesson well-learned I'd say :)

It's only natural that not many people know it, since it's not in the road code.
The road code just says that you should do that if there's other fast moving traffic, or traffic following too closely.
Even worse, of course, is that the road code these days is a mixture of rules and suggestions, with no clear indication as to which is which

You are only required to move to the left and wait, if your presence waiting , on your side of the road, would obstruct traffic. You may wait, stationary, on the left side of the centre lane until oncoming traffic has passed, provided that there is no traffic behind you.
A vehicle overtaking by moving to the wrong side of the road must always ensure that he has 100mtr of clear visible road ahead. Obviously, if Mr Motu was there, the road was not clear.
This assumes of course that the road is a two lane one or more. A single lane road is quite different, and , like much else, a good deal of the mythology about what is correct derives from vague memories of the days when most roads were single lane. Clearly, if the formed road is only one lane, it would be most unwise to sit waiting in that one lane in the face of oncoming traffic . It would hit you!

hey, no need to start the blame game
Agreed, but the thread is about blaming the other guy for nearly killing himself while the rest of us nod sagely and tut tut about his stupidity.
So I am making a point. Yes, he was prolly going too fast and looking for an accident, but that needs to be tempered with the law that protects him from such a thing happening.
It's all a learning process and if we realise that both parties (whoever they may be) need to be aware ... then maybe we just saved someone else

As I said - I could of made the turn safely in front of the oncoming car,and there were no other vehicles on the road at the time. But I saw a small dot besides the car and by the I sussed what was happening my window of oppurtunaty closed. It doesn't matter if I was turning or not,I was another vehicle coming the other way - he had started to overtake before he saw me....which means he broke a pretty basic rule.

If memory serves, that was changed in the Traffic regs 1976 to allow drivers turning right to stop to the left of the centreline OR pull over to the left.

You are sir, quite correct. Both options are legally correct depending on circumstances.

Explanatory note, from the Traffic Regulations 1976
(1)Regulations 4 to 8 replace the former provisions relating to keeping to the left, driving in lanes, changing direction, and overtaking, and take into account more fully the marking of lanes on roads, and define more particularly the circumstances under which different lanes may be used. Regulation 7 includes a provision requiring vehicles turning to the right to move to the centre of the road in all cases, but permits a driver, in the interests of safety, to move to he side of the road and stop before making a turn.
Thats been the rule for the last 30 years. I think Mr Grub must be even older than me. And as I suspected, the change was occasioned by the fact that by 1976 roads mostly had two lanes.

It wasn't this little red Bandit pilot on the receiving end of Mr Motu's well-honed observation skills...
I am well away from my ride at the moment:crybaby:...but it was worth it on the weekend to be surrounded by race bikes at Teretonga

The only law protecting him was that Murphy was temorarily distracted. It doesn't need double yellow lines to tell you not to pass on the inside of a corner you can't see around. He didn't do a thing right and had no laws in this land or the next to protect him.I was equaly in the wrong for abandoning my previously indicated intentions and actualy doing the complete opposite. But I knew what was happening in front of me,behind me,and to either side....I was on top of the situation presented to me,he didn't even realise he was in the shit.

Happy to stand corrected.
Saw someone killed by ploughing into a car stopped just around the corner turning right on a country road. We were the first on the scene.
It kind of made an impression.
