View Full Version : What a day

What a day. Sun was shining and I spent nearly all of it riding
Headed out about 11 and cruised around ponsonby, grey lynn, westmere - home at about 1. Bout to eat lunch but checked emails and had PM from Crashe asking if I wanted to go for another ride. Wahoo - forget the lunch. Jump on my bike and meet Crashe for a natter and some tips for me. Went for a ride around grey lynn again as I know the area and as it is only my 3rd/4th time on road -figured I'd be more confident on streets I know.

Crashe thought we could take it a little further, so we headed out to the end of the western motorway through the suburbs instead of the motorway. Great ride - a cool little windy uphill somewhere in there (probably more like a bump to everyone else - but was pretty cool for newbie )
Stopped at the Shell station (now I know where to meet everyone for the AWNMR) - saw Oldguy refueling on his way home from the KB trip north. Decided to take the motorway home - a first. Today is the first time I have gone over 50km/h so this was a whole new experience. Found the wind really batters the chest, but was comfortable and felt confident. Got home about 6:30. A better way to have spent the day.......can't think of anything close at the moment. Wow
Cheers Crashe for your help. Let ya know how I go on with those hill starts.

Get out and about while the sun shines, gusty winds but not too bad at all. Enjoy the ride.

I meet up with Lteejay this arvo......
We talked for a bit about what she knows and what she can do....
I showed her a few wee tips......

Then I said ok show me what you know........ and I will stop you, if I feel you need to stop to point out things.

Off we get all the bike gear back on...... standing in a carpark in the sun isnt good. Flaming trees were nearby !

I got Lteejay to show me where she has been riding.
Well did I get a surprise...... I'm thinking huh ! Are you sure, this is only your third day on the bike out on the roads.!!!!

Yep this lady can ride......
Just got a few things to really practise on....... one is the revving.... but she is going to contact another 'Hornet' rider re info on these bikes.

At each set of lights or intersections I was able to give brief instructions..
And then I got her to refuel up and we headed out of her wee area that she is comfortable with.
So from the city we headed throu Pt Chev throu New Lynn up throu Kelston, Glendene throu Henderson main drag...... all the way up Don Buck's Rd to Westgate...

We get off the bikes and she has this cheesey grin from ear to ear....
"WOHOOOOOO those twisties were great....." (Don Buck Rd hill)

So we have a drink (Ta for the drink) and chat about how she was and gave her a few more tips.

Along comes Oldguy returning from his trip up north.....
We (all three) all head along the nor-western motorway doing 80km..... yep she admitted that she got even higher...... but only for a brief moment.

Back to her place and we chatted again.
Going over stuff for her to practise.

So LteeJay, anytime you want to go for another wee blat gizz a yell and we will venture out a bit more.

You did really well out there on the roads..... keep up the practise...

Well done Lteejay I did notice you picked up the speed a bit, you did say you would go 70k, but very good riding, you go girl, would love to have helped out but was too stuff after my trip, I think you should try and get out on some country roads, if your not confident with on coming traffic get someone you feel comfortable riding with to lead and you follow there lines that also takes your mind of on coming traffic, and another rider following who can help out with tips and help on your riding.
Good on you Crashe for helping her out.

I remember the first bike i brought a Suzuki GT 125 and my first ride over the road from Taumarunui to Turangi with my mother and my eldest sister behind me, i thought i was doing so well until they passed me laughing thier heads off then i realised i was doing just 60 kms Ahhhh it was such fun learning to ride though
Enjoy cause it just keeps getting better

That sounds like a good idea. Will see how I go over the next few weeks. Nice bike btw.
See you on the road.

Good on the both of you.

Lteejay and Crashe, you could make a joint entry about your ride today over on the "Sunday 7th January Where Did You Ride and What Did You Practise?" thread in the wannabe newbie forum....

Though you are spreading your wings and moving up the speedo, remember to go over your slow bike control routines for 15 to 20 minutes before you head off on your relaxed ride.

Heads Up and Enjoy

Aww that's so kewwwwwl, I's so jealous - laid up with a very sore right foot at the moment. Glad to hear you are getting out there and kudos to Crashe for pootling along with you also!

Keep up the good work and remember to keep reflecting on riding skills when you are off the bike - what did you do right today? What could you improve on? Which area of skills do you really need to practise in a quiet carpark? How are you "thinking" when you are on a ride?

Just by doing this, it'll get you to constantly think about the way you ride and how you handle your purty little ol'Hornet!

Now if only this foot would heal so I can get out and ride - and take a looky at your ride! :msn-wink:

Very nice work Lteejay!! Yes the Hornet is VERY touchy on the throttle, you just have to stroke it gentle and wait for the power. Practice keeping the revs constant with the bike in neutral as I found that helps a lot. My best advice is just be really gentle and take it slowly.

I rode out to a friends place 60 odd km's away yesterday and return trip today. Great fun - and I got overtaken by a black Hornet... mmmmm!!

And then, once you got that sorted out, you fang it into 10000 revs and go hunting the twisties! :woohoo:

But enough of that  I shall speak no more till Lteejay has mastered her little ol'Hornet and seeing the endless, bountiful joys that the Hornet has in store for her!

And lo, all was good again and normal riding function ensues!
