The annual Day of Champions that precedes the British MotoGP round looks likely to have raised a record amount.

Final figures are to be confirmed, but initial estimates are that the total raised for Riders for Health are likely to be in excess of £150,000. Attendance figures were also higher than ever this year with over 6,000 people turning out to support the ever-growing charity and their works in Africa.

The year’s Champion of the Auction was crowd-pleaser Colin Edwards, whose leathers raised a whopping £5,100.

Said principal organiser, and co-founder of Riders for Health, Andrea Coleman “Once again, this shows just what a big heart the sport of motorcycle racing has. No other sport has anything to compare with Day of Champions or Riders for Health. We are very grateful, as ever, to all the amazing people in the paddock for all their help and of course to the ever-faithful fans who make the day what it is.

“The sport of motorcycle road racing, uniquely, has built a life-saving programme that operates nation-wide in a number of African countries. It began in 1989 and now it saves thousands of lives every year. No sport has ever done anything like this.”
