View Full Version : Insurance claim: getting damaged parts back?

My bike is currently getting some new bits (plastics mainly) after I was rear ended at a stop sign.

Spare bits of fairing could be useful to have, so I talked to the bike shop, and they said I could have all the old bits, if it was ok with the insurance company.
I've since talked to several people at the insurance company, all with slightly differing ideas about whether I'll be able to have/buy the spare parts. They seem terribly confused about the whole thing, because apparently no-one has ever asked about this before.

Anyone have any experience with this? Am I being reasonable, hoping to get hold of old parts (I'm prepared to pay for them, within reason)?

Rosie.

ask the repairer what they are going to do with the broken bits .. If they say they goin to chuck it in the bin ... then ask nicely if you can have them... That's what I did

"legaly speaking"
all the parts belong to the insurance company. You probably did the wrong thing by jumping in and contacting the insurance. It seems unless the whole bike is wrecked, or expensiv parts are replaced (maybe complete motor) the insurance companies normaly just ignore the wee bits and after a while the repairer lets you take them home.
This way I ended up with all sorts of plastic bits, footpegs mirrors, indicator lights and a tank, all for nothing.

When the insurance has to replace it we want brand new bits but if we end up having to pay ourself we dont mind a little bog in the tank, it cannot be seen once its repainted after all.
best of luck.
