Can anyone help please. I recently bought a 1993 RM250. Rode it for a total of maybe half an hour. It then died on me which felt like running out of fuel. (I didnt actually check just fueled up again with fresh fuel and correct mix). It was left out in light rainfall for an hour or so and hasnt sparked since. New spark plug and lots of trial and error tests have me stumped. I think it may be the CDI unit which gives very high resistance readings ie. Megaohms rather than kilohms stated in book????? or possibly pick up??? I get a max ac Volt reading of about 26V rather than 5V which I was told to expect.
I cant find a CDI unit in NZ 2nd hand or new (ex japan $770) to try it out to eliminate that. Any help would be awesum. Any one with CDI unit I could borrow breifly or any info. Thanks
Dave

send the stator plate & cdi/coil to

J.Halsey Rewinds

Auckland

He'll tell you what is wrong & likely fix it. Usually the stator or pickup coils. Buy a tool to take the flywheel off, they are quite cheap & any other puller will bugger it.

my RM has been giving me some shit around teh water lately, I found that there was a crack in the mag cover.

Also the sparkplug cap was worn and water got in there.

Thanks also to you cheese. the seal is a bit suspect and I will repair but bike has been very dry in shed for two weeks and still no spark. What year is your RM?

I'm in wgtn but send my stuff up there. As do many bike shops. Local might be handy, but so is a courier & I've tried 'Handy' options but prefer a proper fix. Ends up cheaper in the long run too.

My Rm is a 96. I've got a shitload of parts for it, but no CDI sorry. I'm down your way in two weeks too. Check your coil resistances and see what you get. 96 was the facelift year so mine is a bit different anyway.

Thanks again guys. coil resistances Primary I got 0.5 ohm and secondary 19kohms. Book says P 0-1 ohm and S Canada 20-27Kohm, Other 10-17kohm so it should be sweet.

put the bike semi back together this morning and got a very weak spark!?!?. Back to it now to see if I can improve it. Hmm I think CDI units work or Don't so weak spark hopefully means CDI ok?? Will post back later today. One spark plug month old other one brand new but neither the $100+ plug recommended. Will try another one

my bike eats a few plugs. I've found a $40 one so it's not too bad.

Turned out to be water in the carb fuel bowl. Drained & fixed - bike had been sitting around and condensation had formed...

Thanks again people. Got bike running. No new bits needed. Only thing I did that was different was spray shitloads of Electraclean (electric motor cleaner) all around magneto and pick-up. A bit of bogging at full throttle but hey it RUNS. Really sealed up loom and cover plate because I reckon rain must have worked itself in somehow. Happy riding
