Glad to hear it got sold - I'll be selling a 2003 VTR250 in about a month's time. Just about to give it the 18,000km service. Will be listing on retardme as well as mentioning it here - so if you know of anyone that might be wanting one in the near future gimme a pm.

Whatever it is, you can be sure that it will have the special non-squirmy tyres. Right, McJim?

Well - I keep changing my mind but I've come back to the idea that I had from the start (which I can't afford unless I get at least $5K for my bike!) and that is a 2000 or younger Ducati 750ss. Having sat on one the frame is so much more comfortable than the VTR which was ridiculously cramped for my long legs. Difference between 780mm seat height and 815mm I guess - also the pegs are a bit further back which means my knees aren't bent as much and the handlebars are lower which means more comfort for me since I spent 20 years on racing bikes (pushies) so the happy shopper handlebars of the VTR hurt my back!

I've been told that the 750ss isn't really worth it. The 900ss is apparently much better and they usually don't cost much more.

too many cc to insure.

I don't want a fast bike - really I only want a bike with a bigger frame than the VTR cos it's friggin uncomfortable and I keep losing the blood to my lower legs.

I was going to get a 400ss but the frame on the older Ducati SS bikes (1990-1997) are about the same as the VTR but the new 750ss is 815mm. nice.

Other bikers seem to think I'm a bit weird for not wanting power though - hey, it takes all sorts.

regarding our chat the other day about the sound of Ducatis. There was one burning off from the domain after my football game. Too far away to ID model but it was yellow and naked and sounded AWESOME. I definately can see what the appeal is there

Do you mean too expensive or you simply won't be able to get cover on a bigger bike?

I was meaning it would be too expensive to get cover. I am making the assumption that at least some UK logic is applied to insurance in NZ (i.e. the bigger the engine the bigger the mess you can make)

I've had a look though - there are a lot more 900ss bikes for sale and on average they are cheaper than 750ss bikes to buy used.

Odd. Will look into insurance costs when the time comes.

If/when I get one I'll be sure to let you come round and listen to it for a small fee (well - I am Scottish after all!)

The premiums mentioned in my brit-ish Performance Bikes magazines are just absurd.

Being over 25 and a full licence is worth a lot more than the cc rating of the bike.

Undecided at the mo.

Have you seen that D50 has put your old VTR250 up for sale on retardme?

He undid all the fine work you did with the carbs. Or at least got Botany Honda to do it.

I wonder how much I'll get for mine - will get the 3 panels resprayed professionally so it should look mint.

insurance here is based on the value not the cc rating

Agreed. Some of the "Online Quote" thingies you fill out don't even ask the CC rating, and I think usually only the excess is affected by your license type or age.

Gah - you fellas should be salesmen - 900 L Twin here I come baby!

Gonna save up a bit of dosh now for maintenance costs on a Ducati - puts my plans back a bit to May - so that will be a 2003 VTR with 24,000km on the clock. If you place an advance order you get to choose the colour - otherwise it's going back to candy apple red.

Are you still going to do the Advanced Course to bring your Restricted time down to three months or not bother now if you are waiting until May.

Still if you did the course you could have three months of test riding bigger bikes :Punk:

I'm seriously suffering from sore legs coz the VTR is too small - might apply for an exemption in the meantime.

The course takes up at least 4 evenings over a fortnight. I'd do it if I could take a day off work and cover it in a day. The exemption = $22 the course = $150..McJim = Scotsman....which option do you think I will take?

In addition to cc - I'm 48 and when I insured my 1100 it was hit with a $1500 excess, but the 750 attracts $500...

Have you seen that D50 has put your old VTR250 up for sale on retardme?I've seriously considered buying it back. I love that bike. It took me everywhere was heaps of fun. But, alas, the funds are not there. Maybe I will get the chance next time it comes up for sale.
Gonna save up a bit of dosh now for maintenance costs on a Ducati With half the valves and I guess easier access to the engine than their 'superbikes', it shouldn't be too bad.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping. I'm not getting any younger and out and out power or speed is not really my bag. Seem the torquey by underpowered SS Ducati range is perfect for me.
