Would you welcome Mr Coutts back on the black boat?

I would rather loose the cup again than win it with him. The bastard shattered my dreams and exposed the lot of them for the shallow money grubbing cads they are.... (except Peter Blake of course)

Team New Zealand? Yeah.. Right!

Takin' money orf old ladies and giving to HIM and his mates? never again!

He's a true mercenary ... you get what you pay for and his results speak for themselves ... But I'm with you on this ... tell him :finger:

The way he left team NZ last time round and the consequent loss of the cup and all that went with it certainly left a sour taste .... :angry2:
By the way did you hear that he might try to get another regatta up & running in NZ, he's been in talks with Paul Cayard apparently.

I love a good debate and sometimes you have stir up the natives in order to get it going ... so do you have an opinion at all are you just .....trolling ???

That was no bite!

A bite is when someone responds to your argument. I was just pointing out that "Billy Goat's gruff" may have been a better thread title.

Time for coffee. And a sticky bun.

Hooks, you should say "The way he was screwed around by Team NZ last time". Team NZ had first dibs on him and they screwed him and Butterworth.

The people involved in yatching make more money in a year than all of NZ does.

At the risk of hijacking Paul's troll, uh thread, Cheers Hooks! Summer seems an eminently sensible time to enjoy that road.

Cunning old Bertarelli, brings in a rule preventing certain competitors from joining other syndicates, then sacks Coutts.
When you're that rich, you can afford to have your shame gene removed.

Who cares? Team NZ? Puh-leeeaze... They're not "our" team - they're a bunch of blokes making a good living doing what they want to do - a fantasy job in anyone's books. And it's not even a proper sport at that level - it's who's got the biggest bankroll.

I was as gutted by coutts and butterworth abandoning ship pardoning the pun, as everyone else, but I think that we have lost sight of the fact that yachting is a sport and these guys are for sale with their expertise, if we aren't prepared to pay them big bucks then they are within their rights to go elsewhere, just like some of our rugby and soccer players do, I think Mr Coutts should be brought back to team nz, but be given a very clear contract, we afterall don't want some other syndicate to snaffle him up do we?????

I laugh at the people who are holding some kind of grudge about them shifting teams, and still carry that grudge.

Its not even a New Zealand team. Its a team created by those who can afford it, and labelled Team New Zealand because the americas cup is traditionally faught between countries, not random teams.

They left Team X because they got a better deal with Team Y. Deal with it.
Now Team Y seems to be having problems, I dont see why Team X shouldnt have him back (Unless it would clearly affect the balance of the team, yeah it would be great to have their experience there, but it does bring up issues like Who's Going To Drive).

Typical NZ attitude, shunning one of our (and the worlds) top sailors just "because".

Its like the not having nuclear powered ships in our ports issue. Just "Because".

I cant understand why all the vitriol is directed at Coutts and Butterworth? There were plenty of other team memberes who decided to ply there trade some where else and nobody seems to give those blokes a hard time...
Not just in yachting either, heaps of other sports where sportsmen and women choose to go offshore.
To be fair we should just hate everyone equally shouldnt we? Where is the sense of justice?

I think Jim has a point, but I'm sure this thread wasn't an intentional troll... ;)

Anyway, previous posts about America's Cup yacht racing not being a proper 'national' sport are entirely accurate. I don't really see why any of us should give a toss about what happens. Including whether 'Team NZ' win, lose or sink.

Now theres a nice Auckland attitude for you...I guess mebbe you had to have been here? But it's true - it's not about sport, just money, so it makes it hard to identify with 'our' team (especially when 'our' guys are on many of the teams).
It's not called "The City of Sales" (or "Snails" when you're talking about the traffic) for nothing, you know. Just about everything here is about money...
See you in Christchurch in a few years, when we move back to a place with a REAL lifestyle.

Russell is a???..Oops! Just realised I didn't answer this question.

So whats different about the "auckland attitude" to the rest of the country?
Is it the rest of the country that thinks we shouldnt have them back because somehow they turned their back on their country? Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. Thats not directed at you Paul btw.

Meh. Im not in an arguing mood. I should do some work.

Interesting....

Normally I could not give a rats arse about sail boats unless I happen to be sailing on one...

However, the difference is that these guys played the 'Team NZ' card with the 'Lets Get Behind The Black Boat' thing and took donations from people. The whole red socks thing was another example....

Lets be honest, to get to the top in most sports you need an unhealthy amount of self belief that borders on arrogance. Mr C has that in spades. With out going into the who thing, it appears the man has serious issues working with or for anyone and ultimately it will be the ruin of him...

Should we care? No, yachting is a nasty, spiteful and petty activity and desperately unworthy of any nations support (as a nation). Some people are better at hiding this than others but the whole protests and lawyers thing is a frigging joke!

What I do maintain is, that these people played the emotion card and they cannot be surprised at the reaction. It's part of the deal! It's like becoming a TV celebrity then bitching about the lack of privacy when your smelly little secrets are found out. It goes with the job!

Personally, Coutts is just a figure head. I genuinely think the lot of them that defected are prize pricks and I would not cross the road to piss on them if they were on fire... The difference being, I was bought up in a family that had the shit kicked out of it in the depression and you learn that you do what you have to do to survive BUT there is a line that you don't cross...

They crossed that line....

They pay the price....

The whole 'red socks' thing was a nation behind the late great Peter Blake not Team NZ and the money grabbers that exist now.

Bring back Russell....HELL YEAH! Not only is he kinda cute but he can bring the cup (oh and a bundle of revenue) back to NZ. They may have crossed the line but are you telling me Rossi races for free ...or Schumacher ? I dont think so! RC won the cup and retained it and thats way more than any existing person can do both financially and publicly for NZ. Dean Barker with all his cute looks and kind media persona cant win races. OK guys lets put Mandy Smith aside for just one minute

The Americas Cup is worth a damn fortune. We need to swallow some pride.

Wow I wasnt expecting that. I guess I was aiming at the point of view that if its good for NZ then why not - we need all the financial exposure we can get dont you think. The Viaduct seems now deathly quiet. It is commercial sport and where the money is they go.

The whole Team New Zealand thing was just a Promo name so that sheep would part with their money. This syndicate and that what Team New Zealand was had two objectives. To milk as much money from the public and retain the cup so that the tycoons and the Buisness Round table and their supporters could cream as much as they could. Sport my arse. What realy pisses me off is the whole patriotic approach to the cup. ie the swiss team the American team the Italians etc. Couts did a runner so be it. This is a professional hobby and he did what he thought was best. Now that he is in the doghouse or nautical equivilent you can not blame the man for trying to get back in the game, but not here. Kiwis like a bit of loyalty. Imagine if Carlos Spencer went to play for the Aussies got the boot and wanted back in the All Blacks I mean what an uproar that would cause. Mexted would be out in the streets rootin' for Carlos, and the pig islanders would be out rooting for Mexted aka the Spencmext Team.
