I agree the Trumpy looks nice, but it's British so will probably leak a oil over the back tyre, causing an accident.

Therefore I'd have to choose the Gixxer 750.

Wow! Hardly a complete list. It may just as well have been restricted to the 2006 squid bike models.

What about the new FJR1300 or the all new Bandit? What about cruisers -- surely the M109R should rate a mention? Harley Davidson launched a whole new range of bikes with a new engine in 2006. Where's the Suzuki GSX600? I could go on, but hopefully my point is made.

Fazer 1000, Triumph Scrambler, BMW F800, mutter, mumble...

I challenge others to name the 2006 new models I've forgotten!

Hm. 6 squidlies, one grand tourier, one crusier and one all rounder. Do I detect a slight bias here.

And not a Hardley in the lot.

imdying
10th January 2007, 12:56
GSXR750K7 is 2007 model?

I somewhat agree with Hitcher, we need a few polls, one for each 'category' (yeah, bit of pidgeonholing to do), and then one final poll with the previous winners. Bit of a mammoth task but...

James Deuce

I reckon the KTM and the ER6n are the only two bikes in that list that "normal" people could live with on a day to day basis.

Most normal people don't even ride a motorbike do they?

Hitcher
10th January 2007, 13:04
It shouldn't be too hard a task to compile a list of "new" model bikes released in 2006. And by "new" I don't mean facelifted or slightly tweaked models e.g. Suzukis with a new colour scheme and "K7" added at the end of the model descriptor.

That may produce a long list, and some sensible judging criteria should help whittle that back to an overall "winner". I agree with Jim2 that the focus should be on an accessible day-to-day bike, rather than a two-wheeled equivalent of Angelina Jolie.

Haven't seen the K7 750 and probably neither has anyone else only the K7 1000 has been released so far....
Redo the poll if you want people to vote, this poll is inconsistent and as such should be deemed invalid.
Bike of the year should be guaged from all types/brands of bikes, not just the ones that the importers let Motorcycle trader play on.
There are plenty of other bikes that should be on the list: CBR600RR, GSX-R1000, ZX6R etc etc
Its for the Bike of the Year so the criteria for judging is always going to be weird, how can a Supersport bike be compared with a cruiser or a super tourer or even a learner bike?
I never really care for bike of the year as they mean absolutely sweet f-all to most people, as most have their own opinions of what bike is best for them.
How many bike enthusiasts buy a bike based on what an NZ magazine tells them?

Any poll like this is bound to disgruntle some punters. Buy any mag and the top lists are biased towards sportsbikes, after all that's where all the technology and money goes.

What would you rather see in a car poll, DB9's or toyota corollas?

Are these bikes the list of the awards finalists, or does each sponsor have the opportunity to nominate their own, and this is Star's list? Either way i reckon it's good to have a say regardless of how limited it is.....

There is a couple of other bikes on the list which we couldn't fit on the poll as the site only allows 10 options. They are Honda Goldwing, Triumph ST 1050, Yamaha FZ1, BMW F800S. So if a mod can add these bikes it would be great

These bikes are nominated by the distributors in New Zealand.

James Deuce

Again, not bikes for mere mortals.

When are bike mags and bike manufacturers going to wake up to the fact that most people don't have $25-$40k to biff at a bike every year or two?

Where's the bike capable of touring two up in reasonable comfort, commuting, and going round corners in an entertaining way, for less than $15k new? The ER6n would have a stab at that, but with no fairing and little scope for adding a fly screen thanks to that headlight, touring might be a bit tiresome.

In answer to the chap who made the comment about DB9 or Corolla? Corolla's and their ilk DO win car of year awards. The Fiat Multipla won Top Gear's car of the year award in 2000. The car guys seem to get it. People want to read about what they can afford to own and run as well as the alpha dogs in each category, and they want them celebrated, not the usual desultory single page "review" that whinges about them not being as good as the flagship models.

Look at how many people own or have owned Hornet 900's in NZ for instance.

Hitcher
10th January 2007, 13:40
The 2006 Honda Goldwing wasn't a "new" model. Apart from the addition of an airbag, it's no different from the 2005 model.

And don't the Harley distributors get a vote or do they choose not to participate?

And adding extra choices after 57 people have already voted on the poll is a bit pointless really.

I agree with you. There are lots of "current" models (i.e. sold "new" by distributors) that have been around for years and just keep on keeping on. But this is a "Bike of the year" competition, the last word of that descriptor being the kicker. It's not a "Stood the test of time" competition.

Argh! Don't add the F800S NOW that I've spent my penny and voted on the triumph. Irrespective of what I have I would have voted for whatever is substantially new and innovative. Hence the 675 and BMW F800 which are both out of left field, achieved stylish looks while still being very functional in terms of their design brief. Others are just minor tweaks on a long running theme.

Only one bike on the list of options has truly broken the barriers the rest are mostly anoher model slightly better than the previous, mostly in the same mould.
The ZX14 is New and from the start is a brilliant sports bike as well as a hyper tourer, it has out of the box enabled HP unfound in other new bikes
It is a brilliant handling bike, Fast as hell and comfortable, it caters for everything in one, and its a new bike model.

Funny, all the bike mags reckon it's a disappointment with insufficient bottom end.

Not all the mags I read, do you know how much torque this produces? it has heaps of bottom end, the bike however does have a restriction under 4500rpm this is so its not to much of a handful for the masses, I have put in a OEM T.R.E to override this and it has more pull low end than a 16 year old schoolboy at the playboy mansion, 9.14 sec quarter mile out of the box is a good result for the power curves.
its a winner

the suzuki's , whilst a good bike they are just another one in a boring line up with nothing particulary fantastic about it, certainly nothing amazing enough to be a bike of the year.

Not dillusions at all, Ive pretty much steped of a 600 ZXR 2006 and on to a ZX14 , I think the ZX14 is very close to the handling of a 600, it is extremely nimble light and agile, I speak from actual experience having owned a 600 and a ZX14, the ZX14 feels very planted in the tight twisties even more so than most bikes I have ridden.
The actual wheelbase is something like 10mm longer than the ZX10, it is not actually a very big bike at all, 215kg , with the new light two bros pipes it would be nearer 200kg now and with the geometry and power it is exceptional in the handling department, surprisingly so.

I remember testdriving a Kawasaki 650W and from 120mkh upwards it was a bastard to hang on. I had the Er6n up to (indicated) 185kmh and still was ok. (closed road officer) I think one could happyly cruise at 140 the whole day with either a Givi or the optional Kawasaki screen.
BUT: pretty it aint !!!!!!!

I wasn't talking about the ER6. I was talking about the bikes listed in the post immediately prior to the post of mine you quoted that had been left out of the poll. I had also already made the comment that the Er6 and KTM were the only bikes in the poll that "normal" folk could live with as transport.

The ER6 is the token "affordable" bike in a poll of rich bastard's bikes.

however the Fireblade was a real dog in the 05

Nothing wrong with a real dog mate. The Fireblade is a Rottweiler, not that fast but sure footed. A pedigree you wouldn't mess with or it will bite you and hard. The GSXR1000 is an inbred pitbull. Very aggressive, typically owned by mongrels and is often put down.

Well, the GSX1400 fits the bill perfectly. Less than 15g's new, a lot of bike for the money, way under rated.... Ok, so no fairing but at least you know you are doing the speeds you are actually doing and did I mention it's heaps of fun with heaps of torque, comfortable solo and two up, thrives on the twisties and.........

Oh, it's not on the list. :( :( I'll get my coat on the way out. :)

Tell the truth, while working on my CB750F model, I've kinda gone of fairings a little bit, I like it how you get to show off the engine :D

Triumph Scrambler was my favourite bike - by a considerable margin.

The scrambler looks mint :D

but I think I'd still get a Bonnie over it, and the sixty8 range of mods is mint

Exactly my point. Brilliant real world bike. But no WSBK, WSS, or MotoGP kudos so it's not on the radar.

'06 zx10r ftw. what about the new rs125? rocket 3 etc etc etc. so many bikes could be on that list but you don't see them.

harleys havn't really changed in 45 years. did the new engine have watercooling and no pushrods or something or did they actually put 4 valves per cylinder. lmao. vrod engine was the only decent change and decent thing they have done for years, even so...

'new hardly 2029' "lolz we put more chrome on it and some stock tassles, thats new right?>???". jesus they look so plastic and crappy hyosh1tta styles now, old harleys are much better to look at than the new harleys.
