This is a press relese for the Show
A CELEBRATION OF MOTORCYCLING
It’s time to celebrate motorcycling.
When Gottleib Daimler put two wheels and an engine together to create the first motorcycle in 1885, even he could not have imagined where his invention would take the world.
New Zealanders will celebrate Daimler's enduring legacy when motorcycles and bike activities take centre stage in Auckland in February.
“It has been a huge 12 months for motorcycling in this country,” said Motorcycling New Zealand (MNZ) CEO Paul Pavletich.
“This is just a continuation of that.”
MNZ is still basking in the glow of hosting two major international events -- a stand-alone motocross featuring world champions past and present, and the 31-nations International Six Days Enduro -- both events staged in Taupo in November.
“The Taupo Motorcycle Club did a fantastic job running the Oceania/International motocross,” Mr Pavletich added.
The sporting code has never before enjoyed such a high profile in this rugby-mad country and Mr Pavletich believes the show in February will keep the embers burning hot.
Billed as the Celebration of Motorcycling Show, this inaugural two-day event is expected to attract thousands of bike enthusiasts to the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre at Manukau City.
The show, on Saturday and Sunday, February 3 and 4, will feature activities by freestyle motocross and elite trials exponents, and displays of classic, post classic, vintage and modern machinery.
“We'll have a Britten motorcycle on display, a McIntosh, two hand-crafted Steve Roberts’ machines, as well as one of the BSL (Buckley Systems Limited) GP machines,” said Mr Pavletich, himself a former New Zealand road-racing champion.
“We've assembled a large number of machines in the one place. We will also have the world's fastest Indian to show people too.
“It's the first time we've had a show like this. It's going to be great,” Mr Pavletich said.
He said the four big Japanese manufacturers and popular Italian brand Ducati and an exotic Italian Moto Morini Corsaro 1200 would also have a high presence at the show, along with motorcycle accessory companies.
“Any funds generated by the show will go towards promoting future motorcycle events and add value to MNZ licenced events such as adding training.”
The weekend also doubles as the date for the annual Motorcycle Trader and News-sponsored motorcycling awards evening for MNZ, a black-tie affair where the nation's motorcycling champions are honoured and industry achievements are recognised.

the last time I went to a bike show at the Telstra Ctr there were patched gang members sitting at both ends of the inside 'arena'
Moms and Dads with kids were likely to never bother again; not a good image and not good for a relaxed atmosphere.
For the sake of continued bike shows I hope we don't see the same.

Sounds worthy of a trip up the line to see the new line up of 2007 bikes.
Will there be salubriously lusty racing/umbrella girls like at KIMS06?

Why oh why do they have to put 2 major motorcycling events on at the same time I dont know. Mind you I suppose for those of you's going you can attend the bike show one day and come to the racing at Pukekohe the next. I'll be at the events centre on the friday working on the Honda stand helping set up and getting all the bikes ready, but wont be there for the weekend as I will be camping at pukekohe for the classic racing and helping out there doing oil checks and stuff. its a tradition people, we go every year. Have fun lovelies. :sunny:

Going to the show tomorrow and thinking about taking the bike 'stead of the van, but not sure about parking and gear. Don't normally take the bike to shows, so where do I put all the riding gear while there? Be a bit heavy carting the gear around all day and the top-box won't fit it in.
What does everyone do? Have seen lots of bikes at shows, but the bikers I see don't seem to be carrying much apparel around with them.
Suggestions?

We went out to the show this morning and spent ages looking at all the bikes. The live bike shows where great and it was nice to see Aaron Slight there signing posters. Got one for us and one for the grandkids.
The fastest Indian was the highlight for me though. I couldnt believe how small it is. That man was a legend alright.

3rd February 2007, 20:08
Did Burt use tools? I thought he built the bike with a flat bastard and a King Dick? Do it,I'd love to hold a conrod in my hands that was carved with a hacksaw and file out of a truck axle.
Ixion
3rd February 2007, 20:49
Thaz OK. I've GOT a flat bastard (several in fact) and a King Dick. (and none of these bastards have any idea wot we're talking about). Thats the difference between Burt and me. I wouldn't have the patience to shape it with a hacksaw, I'd use a gas axe. Old half shafts out of Morris 8s make good crankpins, too.Tried it. (OBVIOUSLY, cut down somehat!)

Well Ixion on you cant take it apart unfortunatly. Just come along and see this thing it realy is amazing that it could go so fast

3rd February 2007, 21:41
And sash weights make good valve guides too.I made the mufflers for my XLV750 from a Transit driveshaft.I'm not so amaised that Burt made the old bike go so fast - but that he did it with so little....so little tools and equipment, materials,so little knowledge and skills, just shear hard work and a goal.

Some of us do...
Good show for sure! Hope MNZ are encouraged and put it on again! Hope, too, that next time more dealers will be encouraged to contribute.
Second time I've seen Burt's Indian and agree I still find it hard to believe just how tiny it is!:niceone:
Had a brief chat to Aaron Slight and our very own BD!
The Stratosphere was very interesting, one had to stop and look and look again to take in all the clever little bits. Was smaller than I expected, too. I think I'd want one!
Good line up of classics along with all of us older bikers reliving their youth while examining them. Shame Classic_Z couldn't get his Z1300 there this time as it was one of the bikes missing in the line-up. Maybe next time, Tim?
The visitor's bikes parked outside were as interesting as the one's inside, too. Some extreme stunt/sports creations including a very tasty R1 based streetfighter! :gob: Sorry didn't get a pic!
Great to see the demographic covered from young kids and teens both girls and boys to really old folk! Shows the interest in bikes is as healthy as ever and bodes well for the future!
Kudos MNZ!:2thumbsup

I really enjoyed this show and reckon it has the potential to be a pretty big event in the years to come. Great location too with plenty of room inside for displays, and outside for demos. Perhaps next year there can be a stunt riding display???
Couldn't believe how tiny Burt Munro's bike is - how did it not fall to pieces at the speeds he was doing?
And that Stratosphere.... looks pretty wicked in the flesh. They just need to get someone with an eye for colour to do the seat. Orangey-tan on silver is NOT a winning combination!

Went to the Classic Bike Racing @ Puke too. Great to see the Britten running and the Rotary Norton 588cc "The White Charger" (shit could that bike go). By the far the best out of the two IMHO.
Now if they combined the 2 with the display in the Centre Fields of Puke, that would be totally awesome:Punk:

I heard it was fun; apparently Pav couldn't keep the front wheel on the road in 3 gears (but then he always was a pretty good show off with the wheel aimed at god)
I quite liked the yellow/black look but since I've just bought the KTM, a Morini will have a while to wait before it sees the inside of my garage.
