View Full Version : So, what Tribe are you?

Hitcher
15th January 2007, 12:02
According to a new book, 8 Tribes: The hidden classes of New Zealand (www.8tribes.co.nz), individual New Zealanders are defined by one of eight tribes:

The North Shore tribe
The Grey Lynn tribe
The Balclutha tribe
The Remuera tribe
The Otara tribe
The Raglan tribe
The Cuba Street tribe
The Papatoetoe tribe

You can learn more about which of these may define you by completing the on-line questionnaire at the above link.

Don't guess or try to read too much into the names that are used to describe the Tribes.

Interesting seeing that I am a saffa who's been living on the shore for the last 7 odd years.

Your dominant tribe is Balclutha

You're from the commonsense tribe who know that pride comes before a fall and the people you can count on are the people that really count.

The Balclutha Tribe - Staunch

The Tribal Mind of the Kiwi heartland, the provincial conservatives, who see themselves as a source of stability and commonsense, bearers of on-going connection with the land solid, reliable and down to earth, but also deceptively smart.

Hitcher
15th January 2007, 12:21
I agree with you Riffer. The Tribes are very demographic, rather than values-based, meaning that people will probably change from one Tribe to another over their lifetime. I also thought that the online questionnaire was leading in both the choice of questions and the way they were expressed.

A good conversation starter for New Zealanders, none the less.

what is a typical 'POM'?

Probably worthy of its own thread, that discussion:

Fear of fresh vegetables, rare steak, soap, running water, Germans, American sitcoms, Europeans...

Roman sandals AND socks. Braces AND belts.

An inate urge to line up behind two people facing the same direction. And to yell out "Ayyyy ludd!" at Russell Watson concerts and "Ayyyy luss! at Charlotte Church.

Your dominant tribes are Raglan and Balclutha

It's hard to live according to these values in the big city - there's a certain lack of reality and far too much faddishness and wastefulness there.

The Raglan Tribe Free spirited

The independent spirits who value the ability to live a life according to their own priorities, not the consumerist pressures for material aggrandizement. They tend to be highly sensate and internally focussed hedonists, or spiritual journeyers, fitness fanatics or adrenaline junkies. Many Kiwis join the Raglan tribe for three weeks at Christmas.

The Balclutha Tribe - Staunch

The Tribal Mind of the Kiwi heartland, the provincial conservatives, who see themselves as a source of stability and commonsense, bearers of on-going connection with the land solid, reliable and down to earth, but also deceptively smart.

I got...

Your dominant tribe is North Shore

You're ambitious and hard-working, steadily working your way up in the world. Still hungry for more though.

The North Shore Tribe Achieving

The ambitious, hard-working, heavily-mortgaged inhabitants of the great suburban jungle for whom looking good and keeping up appearances are fundamentally important. They survive in the jungle by constantly moving ahead, up through the ranks of job, car, house, street and suburb.

The North Shore Tribe – Achieving

The North Shore tribe is populated by self-made men and women – self- starters with large doses of ambition, aspiration, perseverance and achievement. There’s a simple and powerful philosophy underpinning this set of tribal values: you work out how the system operates, work hard, climb the ladder and enjoy the rewards at the top – the nice house, the nice car, the overseas holidays.

The North Shore tribe dominates many parts of New Zealand society, just as its counterparts do around the world. It’s a core part of the “mainstream”, the economically energetic class that drives our urban consumer economy and is so prized by our agenda-setting media networks and advertisers.

Money defines life for the North Shore tribe. It’s the factor by which value judgments are made. Something is valuable or worthless according to its cost. Earning a decent income, striving to become comfortably wealthy and moving up the status ladder is the unquestioned point of life. Living in a way that expresses your success is natural. Your suburb, house, car, clothes and holidays all have status implications, and in the North Shore tribe, you should always go for the best your money can buy.

You hate people who are "up themselves", you'd do anything for your mates, you enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

The Papatoetoe Tribe Unpretentious

Urban working people who disdain wankers and define themselves by their unwillingness to think of themselves as better than their mates the classic state house and jug of beer Kiwis.

and Grey Lynn: "The highly educated intelligentsia who value ideas above material things and intellectualise every element of their lives. Their most prized possession is a painting by the artist of the moment, they frequent film festivals, secretly wish they had more gay and Maori friends, feel guilty about discussing property values and deep down are uneasy about their passion for rugby. Quite a lot of bollocks really. I presume that the 'tribal' motif was something to do with reality TV (now there's an oxymoron). I suppose as long as you realise that it's been done by a marketing company it's good for a laugh.

I don't know how they get the name of the tribes, but I'm Papatoetoe apparently.

''Though this tribe is no longer as prevalent or as powerful as it once was, it has had a significant effect on the values and attitudes of many New Zealanders. Many Papatoetoe tribal attitudes have their origins in classic industrial-age, blue-collar values: hard work, solidarity with the workers and distrust of the bosses and educated types. That was the era of the state house, flagon of beer and an honest day’s pay for an honest day’s work.''

I grew up in the most industrial blue collar area in NZ - Mt Wellington, which was the working class suburb that supplied Penrose with it's workers....Penrose was then the most industrialised area in the country. And I went to Penrose High School, their job was to supply working fodder to the factories.

While certainly not typical working class - my base philosophy is definatly an honest day's pay for an honest day's work.I have a distrust of those who don't work with their hands and the sweat of their brow....you get to where you want to be by shear hard work, making money out of nothing is the lowest form of existance.

Yes we all like to belong, apparently, and self worth/esteem is essential for a persons function as an adult.

Please excuse my cynicism, but having done the good old History, Education, Phsycology, Anthropolgy bit at Uni many years ago it's impossible to not be a wee bit jaded when you see something being marketed as defining a society's social fabric/structure.

AND BIG TITS

I don't really see the utility of big tits, to be honest. I'm mainly concerned with an arse that fits almost entirely within my hand.

Because, you know, I need the other one free for the other chick's arse.

Situation comes up all the time.

Your dominant tribe is Raglan

Unlike the people who take the mainstream path, you got where you are today by creating your own journey. You won't die wondering.

Two toes for me!

Your dominant tribe is Papatoetoe

You hate people who are "up themselves", you'd do anything for your mates, you enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

The Papatoetoe Tribe Unpretentious

Urban working people who disdain wankers and define themselves by their unwillingness to think of themselves as better than their mates the classic state house and jug of beer Kiwis.

Which I think clearly shows that Mr Hitcher has never been spiritually to Balclutha (and is no doubt none the worse for that)

Mr Hitcher has been to Balclutha. Several times. Once on dole day. I can still hear the banjos. That is enough spiritual empathy for me.

I read the thing in the paper last weekend and identified with the Raglan tribe, not realising there was more to it than that! I ticked Raglan but when I got my profile it said I was a blend of Papatoetoe and Balclutha! Not sure about that... although I think I'm pretty unpretentious, and I suppose I am down to earth although not dumb! 'spose there could be something to it...

The Balclutha Tribe - Staunch

The Tribal Mind of the Kiwi heartland, the provincial conservatives, who see themselves as a source of stability and commonsense, bearers of on-going connection with the land solid, reliable and down to earth, but also deceptively smart.

Your dominant tribes are Raglan and Cuba St

Your tribal combination shows an alternative view of the world and a strong sense of anti-mainstream individualism - but perhaps you're mellowing with age

The Cuba Street Tribe Avant-Garde

A transitional Tribe for young alternative Kiwis on the cutting edge of cool, where new is the greatest virtue, being labelled mainstream the greatest fear and self-expression the great preoccupation. The Cuba Street tribe is the edge from which many trends and fashions emerge in the 80s it was the vanguard of espresso, in the 90s of body piercing and tattoos
