I agree :msn-wink:
Don't forget those FXRs. If you came to Auckland Uni you'd think they've gotta be just about the most popular bike in the country. I'm not sure why other companies aren't picking up on this entry-level market.
Those Suzuki GSX250 (I think) look quite nice too... :niceone:

I'm hoping to link these to KB reviews, or put a sentence or two short description about each. Perhaps you could design a page SpankMe, and email it to me, and I could update it/put in all the data/links.

Thanks for all that info everyone - post has been updated.

Yokai, could you make that info into a page that could be linked from this post? One or two of the new bikes list have been done, just copy and paste that into word and edit the info, then save as an HTML file and send it to SpankMe. I would do more but I have no time

Posh Tourer :P
26th September 2004, 21:10
the ks are low, its not a bad model bike, but of course, rust/mechanical status ie does it still have it's original oil.... will decide whether it is a good buy.

gamgee
26th September 2004, 21:15
or are you saying I should check it doesn't have it's original oil? hey look it's a banana!!! as i said dads a mechanic, so hopefully he will spot anything thats going to go wrong in the way of rust, all I need is a bit of spoon feeding as to some specific things to look out for when buying this bike, or any bike in general thanks

is a good reliable bike, under 250cc, 4 stroke, and under $2000 reg and warrant, have seen a couple of nice FXR150's which I wouldn't mind but would prefer something around the 250cc mark, as I am going to be traveling around a bit over summer :sunny:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Road-bikes/Other/auction-16374824.htm
It's a 1984 thats done 27000k's, it's got no rego or warrant, so I was thinking maybe around $1400

Posh Tourer :P
26th September 2004, 21:27
50,000kms seems to be a ballpark figure at which 250s become less desirable. Depending on the bike, there are various things to watch.
Service history would be great, but that hardly ever happens. Dont worry, it probably doesnt still have it's original oil, if it did, it wouldnt be running by now :S I guess
Run it and listen to any knocks or rattles.
Ride it and listen for piston slap.
Look at the colour of the exhaust fumes - if there is colour it aint good
If it goes ok, and the price is good, get it. You can always fix annoying little problems....

And the first bike I bought, I got with 2 flat tyres and no battery, hadnt been run for 3 years, belched out blue smoke when i initially ran it, and sounded like shit, banging and knocking everywhere.

Still, it gave three years of good service, after we got an electrics problem sorted (coil, twice).

Just goes to show, all the best advice doesnt necessarily apply always. Gut feeling also counts. Not just if it looks cool, but just a gut feeling about how well it is gonna run....

Edit: That one looks pretty tidy and well cared for.... Run it and if it runs well, offer somewhere under $1500 would be my advice

26th September 2004, 22:57
Got told from a guy that those vt250's (before like 92 or whatever) don't last past 50000km. Mine lasted close to 90000 before i blew it up. Replaced the engine and it ran sweet again. Also Honda's have the most shittyiest charging system ever. My vt blew a reg/rec and stuffed 2 batteries among other things so you gotta be carefull. But as i said as a runner she was really forgiving and put some bigger boys to shame out of the corners

Fine, except for the reliable bit. being a 2 stroke it would probably need regular rebuilding.

Hmmm wee too lazy to make a new thread but your thoughts on a 1989 Kawasaki EL/ZL 250 with 47k on the clock, new tyres brakes wof/reg for 2900 ono ?

go my daft logic of not wanting a new bike (gn250) so ill get one that costs just as much second hand :p

other part of my daft logic was not wanting fairings of any description as i know ill drop the bugger so yeah its between this, some old sr250s or do the done thing and get a gn250 :p ( i like to be somewhat different which is why i havent just gone and gotten a gn250 already :weird: )

I have had a 1988 CBR250 Hurricane for 2 years now and have not had a problem with it, I have been told this bikes engine is bullet proof.
Fantastic bike and certainly fast enough for someone on a restricted.

3 more months to go on my restricted then I can start looking for a bigger bike. Yippeeeeeeee

cb250
would be a good learner bike, being a single cylinder it will be relatively tame (which is a good thing when you're learning)
provided it's been treated well, it should get to 60,000km's before it needs anything major, but just bear in mind when making an offer on the price the km's are getting up there, and you could get a suzuki gn250 of this year for around $1500 with lower km's, so don't pay any more than $1800 for it from a dealer or $1500 from a private sale

On the other hand, if you bid on a GN250, youŽd get a GN250..... :bleh:

CB250s are fantastic bikes, if it is a good one, then it is worth it. High ks in only 6 years suggests that someone has used it regularly, and probably for longer trips. That is much better than lots of short trips not very often.
But keep in mind GamgeeŽs comments. I might go a bit higher than that, but not much....

Astolat
20th December 2005, 14:31
Thank you both! Yeah I don't really want a GN250

KLR250, 28hp?, 1cyl, 4stroke, water cooled

Hi Adam - if you could that would be great!! The best way is to host on another free site and link to the page I guess - that way you can update it freely without needing to update your link (as long as the name stays the same) - posts are locked off after a certain time. Alternatively, just add an attachment to your post, and edit your post when it gets updated. You can delete the old attachment and put up a new one.

Suzuki Nz250. Worst bike ever. Single cylinder air-cooled. Spoked wheels. Mine was very unreliable. Broken Stator left me stranded up pukeiti. Engine later blew up, to be replaced w/- new one that felt unbalanced, and died from oil starvation. Since been fixed up and resold by bike dealer. $1700 down the drain for me, plus constant repairs. Find pictures on google...

My KR-150K is going to be up for sale very shortly. Single cylinder liquid cooled 2 stroke, 35 hp. Awesome bike, i've done 36,000 k's on her in the last year and a half, most of which were spent going round corners faster than 600/1000's.

Highly recommended as first bike. Very underated until people see me go past them and wonder what the hell it is.

Ok, Toymachine has taken off to Ireland to help stave off another potatoe famine and has left his bike in my hands to sell on his behalf.

If your interested send me a PM and I will also be putting it up on Trademe for him.

It has 46k kms on the clock, new sprockets front and rear, new chain, new rear brake disc, replaced front brake discs with meatier 2nd hand ones and has been regularly serviced and run on motul oil.

Also have a pile of receipts for work done on the bike over the years.

Need to sell this bike as its taking up room in my garage :)

It is a good little bike to learn on and to commute on. I am of pretty average size, weight and height, and the Scorpio for me is just right when it comes to riding position and being able to plant both feet on the ground. It is also relatively light, weighing no more than about 45kg than my own weight which I guess must help when you are learning to ride.
Around town it is quite zippy. On the open road at 100km/h it is quite busy. They seem to be geared quite low, so the engine is spinning quite fast. Many times I have tried looking for that elusive 6th gear when doing 55-60km/h. 60km/h on the speedo (which reads a little fast) equals 4000rpm in 5th gear. On the motorways, keeping up with other traffic, the needle sits on 7000rpm. The redline is at 9500rpm. At motorway speeds if there is a stiff headwind there is not much extra power left in the engine. If it is not too windy it will accelerate from 100 to 120km/h without too much fuss. No idea what its top speed is, haven't tried that yet but I am guessing somewhere around that 135 to 140 mark. After 11 months on it I am starting to want more power.
During the time I have had it, the only problem has been a slightly leaking fork seal which the the guys at TSS motorcycles (where I bought it) replaced without fuss and under warranty. Reading through the Yamaha warranty booklet it says that gaskets and seals aren't covered under warranty so I was pleasantly surprised to get the work done for free.
The front suspension seems a little soft and dives quite badly under hard braking and bottoms out quite easily if going a little fast up a driveway (might have been the cause of my leaking fork seal in the first place). Rear suspension seems fine for 1 person on the bike. Still being on my restricted I have never has someone else on the back but I would think that being such a small light bike it wouldn't cope with passengers too well.
The bike is assembled in Indonesia and seems to be put together resonably well. I ride it to work everyday, rain or shine, so the bike gets subjected to the weather quite a bit. There are some indications of slight rusting on the bottom triple clamp (think that is what it is called) and I need to deal to this to stop it from getting worse. Other than that it is holding up great. Mine is the blue model with the chrome spoked wheels and chrome exhaust. Another guy at work bought the later red model with the cast alloy wheels and black exhaust. After just 2500km on his I am not sure how long that black exhaust will keep looking good. I have a feeling (and only time will tell) that the black exhausts will end up rusty after a year or so. My chrome exhaust still looks like the day it left the showroom.
The bike is running on Indonesian made IRC tyres which don't seem to stand up to well to the rough roads we have here, especially that grippy man-made chip which they use on the Wainui Hill road and which I travel at least twice a day. The front is showing signs of feathering and the rear might last another 1000km or so. It will be interesting to see if the rear will pass it's first WOF which is due at the end of February.
Overall I am quite pleased with it. Looking to go for my full licence early in March and if the Scorpio had a little more power and cruised at open road speeds at a more relaxed rpm, I would probably hang on to it.

Hey PT - my Honda is a CB250RS and definitely a 1983. Does that help at all or am I missing the point?

I have a Honda CBF 250 2006. Selling hopefully at the end of August this year.

Saw this on Thursday. It's a bit rusty, but seemed in very good nick, and it's very, very cheap. The owner said she just wanted a quick sale, and she had a thick stack of receipts.

Have my VTZ up for those of you playing at home.

Sits between the VTR and a Spada. Dressed between the two, with Spada engine and gearbox and VTR's slightly more comfortable seat(especially for a pillion).

Learned on it myself and packs more than enough power, gets me up to 175 with 6 gears and accelerating faster than any I4 from stop. Overtaken around the 140 mark.

Whats the matter with it? or simply just need to be re licensed and

For that price it would make a nice racer.
