Kawasaki Aussie bike specials

Do Kawasaki have any "special offers" on new bikes in NZ? Just before Xmas they were having a sale, and it's back on again. The prices are

GPX 250 - $5990

KLX 250 - $6490

KLE 500 - $7990

Of course that's Aussie dollars + ORC. Thing is, the 2nd hand Jap "grey import" Honda Spada 250, Honda Hornet 250 and CBR 250RR are around the same price as the GPX and KLX. The KLE 500 is cheaper than the GS500F, which is $8,200.

My flatmate is seriouly considering the KLE 500.

Apparently the prices are kept artificially high as as govt policy is to discourage people from riding as it's "too dangerous". Of course, these are the same old farts that wanted to introduce licence plates on the front mudguard, as if the bikes of today are like an old '50s AJS or something. These are lawmakers who obviously don't ride.


Approved motorcycles for novice riders

As from 6 September 2002 a Learner Approved Motorcycle (LAM) scheme for novice riders (both learner and provisional) will commence on a trial basis. The LAM scheme will allow novice riders to ride moderately powered motorcycles with an engine capacity up to and including 660ml and which do not exceed a power to weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne and are shown on this list. The following list, which will be adjusted as new models are approved by the RTA, displays details of all motorcycles that can be ridden by learner and provisional riders.


Now note that the capacity of the bike is mesured, not on Cubic Centimeters
CC's but in Millilitres, as in fluid volume!! How stupid is that!!


Eligible Motorcycles in the category 0-260ml.
All models with the exception of:

Suzuki RGV250
Kawasaki KR250 (KR-1 and KR1s models)
Honda NSR250
Yamaha TZR250
Aprila RS250


Note they're all 2-strokes.

However, some great bikes are LAMS approved including the Kawasaki KLE500, Yamaha XJR400 & XT660X, Suzuki GS500(f) & DRZ400-SM, Honda XL650V Transalp & NT650V Deuville, Ducati Monster 620ie (lite), and tons more. Of course, most of these bikes are current K6 and K7 models.

Got the "artificially high" comment from the "Two Wheels" magazine review of the Pagsta Cruisa.

The dealers over here are asking in excess of $5,000 for 2nd hand 250s. Check out the prices here:

And another one at $8995!
