I am looking at one of these in Wellington and was wondering if any one had one, knew of them, and any other useful information.

Mainly looking for a road bike but would be interested in some off road stuff at some stage.

You sure you've got the letters/description right?? If its the XF650 Suzuki Freewind I think its a single with the DR650 motor.
If you mean XL650V then you're talking about the Honda Transalp which there are quite a few enthusiastic owners of here.
Please clarify. Thanks

It's a Freewind XF650V (http://www.draytoncroft.com/dcmc.nsf/DisplayBike/5E83DE0A2DFA49B8802570780030890A?OpenDocument).
We just don't usually see them with a V in their title, in this case referring to the year of manufacture (http://www.suzukicycles.org/Freewind/XF650-Freewind.shtml) being 1997.
I believe Ruralman is correct in saying it's powered by a DR650 Thumper engine

Correct - the XF650 has same engine as DR650 but is "enhanced" with twin carbs & bigger valves.

I had one of these for a about 4 months and did about 4k's. It was a 1998 model and was orange/silver in colour. I liked it a lot, actually more than the f650gs I had earlier, in some respects. The engine seemed smoother, handling was reasonably good, the seats quite comfortable on a couple of 450k's trips I had. I sold it as decided to buy another bike, DL650. You won't go wrong with this, just make sure you get the decent tyres and don't pay too much. This model did not do very well in NZ, I think, to do justice to the bike.

Ok, took this bike for a ride and was very peppy, its now on trade me, but i am not sure if 5k for a 97 bike with 30K on the clock is a good deal, i see there are a few BMW F650's in trade me, any one have an opinion on these?

By the way hello all.....

Read this excellent writeup on the Freewind:

Hey YellowDog
If you want to give your XF650 more "punch", suggest re-jetting the carbs & opening up the airbox. "Rogson" and I have both done this to our Freewinds with excellent gains in HP & Tourque.
Ping Roger a message for the details - he's up your way.

That sounds like a great idea and not something I had head of. Will Ping 'Rogson' a PM. Thanks.
