BUMP!

Can anyone put my mind at ease.... Ive done a search but Im a bit stoopid so cant find too much on the subject... What are the roads like going from Napier to Wgtn via Paihiatua, Rimutakas etc? Is there any gravel and are the roads in OK condition?

The roads are sealed and generally good, there are lots of road works on HW2 south out of Napier, but it is a boring road anyway so take HW50 instead, its much more fun! Take the Wairarapa turn off at Woodville, its well signposted, i think it is the 3rd turn on your left
Mstrs can get you on to HW 50 if you need, PM him

Just came down from Napier on Sunday and the roads were in sweet nick (minus the Taka's but thats another story) Definitely recommend SH50 as opposed to number 2. Many more corners and less traffic.

Yeah, thats the way ive decided to go. I have yet to do the Takas on my FZR so I may as well. Im hoping that there will be less traffic going that way as well!

Should be sweet on a thursday presuming no trucks decide to tip over.
We spent about 3 hours in Featherston on Sunday waiting for it to clear. Guess we were luck it wasn't 9 hours like some of the other motorists who refused to turn around.

Will be leaving Napier on Friday to head to Wgtn but im sure the traffic will be sweet then to. At least on a bike its easy to turn around!

As a regular Wgtn-Napier traveller I just about always go to-and-from over the 'takas on holiday type weekends when the SH1 route is just an overcrowded mess. On quiet days, like when you are coming home on Friday it would more than likely be quicker down through the Gorge and through Aokautere, Tokomaru and Shannon and onto SH1 because it is about 15km shorter, but its not as much fun on a bike so do as you are planning and come down the Wairarapa and over the 'takas and just take your time. If you've got plenty of time peel off at Dannevirke to Weber, then go via Pongaroa and Alfredton to Masterton. Then you can go via the back roads to Gladstone and Martinborough before attacking the hill.

As for SH50 Taradale to Takapau Plains, I've stopped using that route lately, (especially at night) because of too many :Police: so keep an eye out for those dudes who hopefully will be off doing other things during the day.

Glad i'm reading this after coming through there, would've slowed me down a bit otherwise. Didn't see one coppa on the way back until we got to Featherston.

Almost witnessed a head on just before Pahiatua, so just be wary of who you're following.

.

They were all in Taupo for the A1 mate.

HW50 is a good fast road but there are shit loads of cops. It is a good road if you have the radar detector on the bike.
I think you have the best roads pointed out to you above.
