NZ Police CommCens Alert 11:00 17-01-2007 Counties Manukau
Location of incident: Hugh Watt Drive, Mangere
Incident Type: "Lucky" escape for kitten rescued by motorway patrol
Hugh Watt Drive was temporarily cordoned off today so NZ Police Motorway Patrol Officers could rescue a kitten that found itself in the middle of the busy road, much to the alarm of passing motorists.
A member of the public called the Police Northern Communications centre to alert police to the plight of the kitten, followed by a call from the SPCA who wanted to send a staff member onto the motorway to retrieve the kitten.
North Comms dispatched two officers on police motorbikes who went to the rescue of the kitten.
After a North Comms dispatcher expressed interest in keeping it, one of the officers put the kitten inside his uniform jacket and delivered it to the North Comms staff member.
Despite its ordeal, the kitten is in great spirits, and staff have christened it with the new name "Lucky".

Great another feral cat! Big deal, got rescued. Not cop bashing but bloody useless pet owner bashing. There wouldn't be half the problems we've got with stray animals if people got their f*cking mongrel pets spade or nuetered. I've dealt with stock losses, animal attacks (even cats) and pet being dumped. Most of which can be avoided by having their mongrel pets nuetered.

Cats are the same as possums in my book. What a waste of time and resource. I wouldn't be swerving to miss it

I see what the cops mean when they say they can't win! Be told about the kitten running loose on the road and leave it, so one of you lot comes around a corner and hits it (because it sounds like very few of you would bother swerving), perhaps coming off and wrecking your bike, or close the road for a while and remove the danger - either way, they're tossers. Obviously.

but how many drivers out there would swerve - straight into oncoming traffic or the next lane...........

Bloody cops - was the kitten arrested before it was taken into custody?
This was a no-brainer in my book. There would be drivers who would swerve for a kitten so therefore it's potentially a hazard. The cops often hold up traffic to remove pieces of wood and other debris (which as a biker deserves a big thumbs up!) so this isn't too far removed apart from the fact hitting a kitten wouldn't damage a car. And that's ignoring all the emotions involved with cute widdle kittens.....

I wonder who left their seal to wander in Southland.
And look what happened to it...the beach down there is technically a carriageway so the result was inevitable really...........

Probably book the owner of the cat for allowing it to get into such a prediciment, then bill the owner for the use of police resourses.

.
It was charged with obstructing a public carriageway and disqualified from driving for six months

Apart from the fact they showed some humanity, they have to remove animals before someone crashes trying to avoid them.
I saw a van nearly roll on the Northern M/way while swerving to miss a duck and ducklings.
Good stuff.
PS The correct charge is being a pedestrian on a motorway.
