Well the cops in NSW don't think so - short sleeved shirts and trou for them. No worries the gun will protect them.

Pic 1 the boys at Bateman's Bay.

Pic 2 the boys at Bungendore.

Well it was hot last week.

Auckland City Council had its own traffic department and they used to ride in white short sleeve shirts and trou. Most likely the early 80's Honda 750's were the weapon of choice for those days I think.

Mmmm I getting old!!!

Aaaaahhhhh, the old CHIPS helmets. We used to peg a bit of cardboard up against the spokes to make a putputputputput/motorbike sound....

I used to recall seeing these Aussie bike cops wearing cotton shirts and think: Fuck that. I'd be wanting one of those airmesh jackets at the very least.

The parking wardens here ride around in similar; short sleeved shorts etc on their big scooters...

Nicksta

do they think just cos they are in uniform they wont crash or no one will hit them???
The uniform is a powerful too. when i ski instructed.. you werent allowed to bail with your jacket on.. otherwise you had to shout a beer for all the staff that saw you.. worse yet if it was infront of a lift que, it was a keg!! so good motivation not to bail... so maybe the same is for the police... crash in your uniform.. shout the station??? good incentive to not come off in a T-shirt me thinks.

When I was riding around in Queensland during the hols, I noticed that biking gear is worn infrequently, even by sportsbikers. Could be to do with the heat, but perhaps they don't need it so much over there? I felt much safer on the roads there. Was still scary to see, though, especially guys on Busas riding around in jandals -.-''

One of the reasons I prefer NZ. Try biking in Aus in full gear in 42 degrees! I winced when I saw sportsbikes on the open road at speed with the rider dressed in a T! Don't know what the answer is without resorting to liquid cooled riding gear, which would be cumbersome for the Cops.

What do our resident Aussie bikers do?

Yea but when you do crash, your gonna wish you did have that gear on. hours on end sweating in gear is paid-off in those few seconds when it's needed.

Yeah, here in the "Territory" there is little regard for safety/protective wear!
Bike cops are in trousers and short sleeve shirts too, must be the heat!
Majority of riders ride without jackets, lot with shorts and a few with jandals....
I was asked one day why I had leathers on in such hot and humid conditions.... My reply: "My tolerance to heat is a lot higher than my tolerance to pain!"

Take care out there

id say sitting on the side of the road with a laser gun could get quite hot in bike gear!

What you guys complaining about at least they have closed shoes on unlike the legend on the motorway doing about 120 in jandals short and tshirt on a 400 weaving in between traffic like he's the next ghost rider!

Mate your a fucken legend you pay alot of money for ACC so might as well use all of it and then some more!

He was doing real well and he was not the only cop doing it, there was 3 of them.
I had the other 2 pic's and do not know where they are now.
They all looked the same until you looked real hard and could see that the riders were different and the bikes were on a different part of the road.

You poor bleeding hearts.
Most MOT cops wore shirt sleeves in summer. We actually HAD summers back then. I had a 120 km/h bin while wearing a shirt. I barely got scratched.
You AREN'T automatically going to die if you don't wear all the safety gear.
I guess if Labour made riding gear compulsory, you sad buggers would vote for them.

They complain and rant loudly....but I think site members are so conservative this is really what they want....more controls so that people will have to do what they want.

Yeah well I started this thread as "you don't need safety gear" and you don't if you don't crash.

I'm one that harks back to the days before compulsory helmets and never thought it was a problem at the time, similarly riding a pushbike without a helmet.

Me I hate stinking control freak mentality.

They say the best safety feature in a car would be a sharp spike in the centre of the steering wheel.I reckon the best safety feature on bikes would be to wear shorts jandals and a T shirt,no helmet - how many cars would pull out say say I didn't see you? The bike rider would of seen them looooong before they pulled out.Wearing leathers and a helmet they would hit the car and blame the driver.

Too ture. I'd be lying if I sayd I wore it EVERYwhere (I don't bother with the pants and boots when I'm getting gas from around the corner). But I agree, I'd put up with the sweat, heat and smell for the protection :)

but I'm not gonna make other people were it, if they wanna loose their skin then go ahead lol. I cringe when I see office yuppies on scooters in a dress shirt and pants :scooter:

I think it's just habit - I can't drive a car without the seatbelt on,it just feels so wrong.I've never been in a crash that needed a seatbelt, but I feel unsafe without one.We wear so much safety gear that to leave just one part off makes us feel ''unsafe''.
