all reports show that Suzuki are going to actually going to have a decent crack at racing this year. The new 800 Suzuki has been one of the fastest bikes in testing so far.

That's great but its actually got to finish a full race without shitting itself. They'll also have to get some decent riders.
Race day will be a different story.

not much news of the Yamaha either. It will be awesome no doubt though. Rossi probably hasn't even tried the bike yet, he'll just turn up on race day, get on, ride and win and go for a beer.

oesn't really matter how old Vermuelen is does it? You're saying he's not a decent rider.....are you now saying it's purely because he's young?
Do you know how old Freddie Spencer was when he won his first world GP title?
And John Hopkins.....he's shit too yeah? Doubt you'd win an AMA Formula Xtreme Title at 17 (I think it was) and get snapped up by a top 500 GP team if that was the case.
He's not had a competitive bike to work with yet, but when he does.....you're gonna look pretty G.A.Y. (er)

What's intriguing is how the geometry styles have changed over the years too.
Nicky Hayden now sits so far forward of the rear wheel on the 212 http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=51223&d=1169079705, while back in 1972 Geoff Perry damn near sat on the back wheel of the TR500 http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=49423&d=1167180445 (just a shame Geoff is no longer with us to sit on the bike any more)

Moving forward with the times! In a few years they'll be sitting behind the yokes holding the front axle in their hands...
Sounds a bit like F1, they're going to be just as fast on the 800's this year as the 990's were. I think Rossi may have a bit of competition this year, too just as MS did in F1. The opposition works extra hard to catch up! It's all good for the sport. I didn't agree that F1 got "boring" as many said when Michael was dominating, neither when Rossi was in MotoGP. It just shows up the need for development by the other teams and when they get it right, it brings GREAT racing!

Yep, it'll be nice for the Suzuki boys to be remotely competitive this year.
Rossi is going to have to work hard - the competition is very fast and talented. Last year's world records are this year's qualifying times and all that...
Up and coming guys to watch for:
Casey Stoner (aka Crash) on the Ducati
Pedrosa
Melandri
Shinya Nakano on a Honda
Actually, pretty much everyone in the field~
There are going to be some great battles :Punk:

Pre-season doesn't mean much until the first race weekend then watch how the practice times go and even that won't matter once someone has won the race.
Remember all the "Rossi is doomed" comments when he was testing the Yamaha his first year on it, but we all remember who won the first race don't we, and the title?

below are pics and screen shots I knicked from motogp.com
Rossi is of course, on top and has done the fastest time on the last day, showing all he is still king.

Ooooo, big call. Might be a good one though. I'd put some $$ on suzuki taking a win this year but I'd say it is more likley with that auzzie than the yank on the seat. Mate.....Vermeulen is a wizz for sure (it's been said he's as accurate with his feedback about what the bike's doing as Eddie Lawson was)...but Hopkins is also only 23...it just seems like he's been round forever.
Hopkins is a real hard charger....and untill now, hasn't had the bike to take it to the boys.....I doubt you'll find that Revvin Kevin would've put the good word in for him if he thought that...
Hopkins has had to ride the Suzuki round corners like a man possesed to try and stay with the other bikes.....his lean angles and corner speed have been second to none....now that they've gone to the 800's they're all having to ride like that, and Hopkins has been doing it for years......he'll go well I've no doubt!
Ivan

I agree its going to be good,
But I am a fan of Vermeulen and Hayden and I think Vermeulen has a good chance this year considering he did race auzzie 250 gp he knows about the bikes cornering like that.
Hayden well I think he is going to do well again not as well as the 990 for the share fact the way he corners sideways but thats going to catch alot of guys out and then they will get used to it and slide the whole corner
Crasherfromwayback
28th January 2007, 10:10
Yeah the whole knocking them back to 800cc to make them safer thing is such a crock of shit!
I mean f*ck.....if they're going round corners 10-20k's faster than the 990's, they're only gonna fly further when they bin it......it's in the corners that they're gonna hit something solid right?
All it's done is cost the factories a shitload of money they needn't have spent......as per usual....the 'Big 'H'.....used their weight to get what they wanted. It was after all, them that wanted the whole four stroke thing in the first place. F*ck....they've been wanting to race four strokes from way back......NR 500 lost them so much face......they've been wanting to show the world ever since! And it's not as if they weren't ready and waiting to go 800 seeing as it's simply their 990 V5 with a cyl hacked off it......how convenient....hope they get roosted!
If they were serious about slowing them down....they should've simply limited them to four speed boxes or lowered the rev ceiling.

So where does all this "ride 'em like a 250" talk originate?
I mean the things have still got over 200hp even in 800cc form, more than your average superbike, and no-one talks about riding them like a 250. Going by the table below the 800's are heavier than the 990's too (not sure about years 2005/6) so surely the same old strategy applies: get it turned as quick as you can, stand it up and feed it the fat.
I know the lower reciprocating mass is allowing higher corner speeds but I'm buggered if I can see what a 250 has got to with anything. The 800's have 100hp more and are nearly 50kg's heavier, so from someone who has ridden neither I don't understand the connection.
Minimum Weight - MotoGP Class

Apart from the lighter engine internals (which allows greater cornering speeds like you say), they don't have the huge amount of torque that the 990's had....so they can't point and squirt like they used to......so to do the same lap times (or even quicker as they almost all are now) they're relying on higher cornering speeds and momentum.

and as they reach the point through the corner that they apply throttle the rear wheel is traveling at a higher speed...and physics dictate that it will take even more HP to break traction
and less reciprocating mass to slow under brakes..

That depends if you keep it under the pillow or leave it at the foot of the bed....
Couple of things, if Nicky Hayden can win a MotoGP world title with only 2 race wins, then I can't see why John Hopkins doesnt have a shot at a world title.
While Rossi might have set the fastest time at Sepang, its interesting that his team have cancelled th Philip Island test to remain at Sepang and carry on testing. Tyres are going to have a big effect this year and with Bridgstone picking up more top teams they have every chance of having an advantage over the Michelins. Interesting to read the comments by the Suzuki how important that they see, of being the top Bridgestone team and so getting the top tyres.
As far as riding the bikes like 250's this is not so much the switch to 800cc but more in the emergence of top quality engine management systems. Even last year you could see how improved they were that allowed rookies like Pedrosa and Stoner to be on the pace straight away. The bikes are actually cutting power in corners so the riders can ride similiar to a 250 with deep and fast corner entries and just pinning it mid corner. The electronics are doing so much that they are able to ride them in this way and get away with it. The systems are only getting better all the time too.

and so Suzuki run into their first gremilin, the can't do corners.
The track Suzuki's appear to hold true to their road going cousins when it comes to corners.
So any Suzuki rider who has lost grip mid corner (and that has to be pretty much all of you) feel relieved to know that you are not a bad rider, its just the bikes blood line.

I say ban traction control
Make it man and machine
The rider has to be in full control the bike slides and bucks eg 500cc 2 stroke
Everything has got so pc now: Im not taking it away from rossi the mans a legend he won without traction control but now its in it makes slow riders faster,
In my Opinion Moto GP is the class to be the king of racing you have to win this so why make it easy for the riders with traction control make it so hard that the man wins
WHO would be Rossi

I think the reasons the suzuki's have been strong thus far is because of there brilliant handling!! the one trump card th Suzi's had is how wel it goes round corners. By grip I would belive they are talking about exit grip..somthing the Brigie seems to struggle with. Those front Bridgestones seem pretty hot tho!! who else saw the pics of Elias with his knee, arse, elbow, peg, handlebar etc etc on the ground at Sepang???
Ivan's kinda right, wouldn't it be nice to see them riding without aids again?? But the best riders will still win, 'casue it is only an aid, its not doing th whole thing for you. It does make slower riders closer tho...which creates closer racing!! so..is it all bad??

Bring back the 500cc 2 stroke I say:shit:
But I would say that im a 2stroke freak.
Because 1 stroke isnt enough and 4 strokes is wasting 2 strokes 2 many
GO the 2 stroke

That's great but its actually got to finish a full race without shitting itself. They'll also have to get some decent riders.
Race day will be a different story.

John Hopkins need's shoulder sliders, I haven't seen many people lean a bike like him. Still I am willing to bet that neither Vermeulen or Hopkins wins a race this year, I'm not saying the bikes are bad, becuase they have already been pretty fast and I'm not saying the riders are bad, there is not a single bad rider in the MotoGP, just based on Suzuki's overall performance last year, with the exception of Chris Vermeulen in Phillip Island, the whole package is just not up to the standard of the front runners and with a whole new bike for the team to get used to, I find it unlikley that they will get a race win.
I think that both riders are very talented, but Hopkins has not done anything impressive in the motoGP yet, since 2002 when he started, his best ever finish was 4th. He was outclassed last year by the tiny Danni Pedrossa and baby face Casey Stoner in their first year on a GP bike. Myabe John Hopkins just isn't cut out for the GP bike.

Ok I've said before preseason testing won't mean much once the first race gets underway.
The Phillip Island tests drew to a close with Hayden fastest at 1.29.52, Pedrosa second at 1.29.72 then a whole bunch of Ducatis and then the Suzukis with Vermuelen 9th at 1.30.72 and Hopkins 11th at 1.30.80.
All the factories will be working for improvements and Honda won't be sitting round resting on their laurels so whoop de doo now the Suzukis don't look so hot.
Rossi wasn't even there so does that mean Hayden is fastest? Who knows. Wait for the first race. Will Finn win the money? I don't know I'm not a betting man.

What it means Merv....is that the Ducati works REAL well there, the Suzuki's have always struggled there, and Rossi and his team know they go well there so have decided to forgo the test there and go to Sepang again where they struggled this time. Forget that with a qualifier on he beat Hopkin's time. They weren't in the hunt all test, time wise on race rubber.
So what we have this year.....is Bridgestone with as many (if not more) teams as Michelin providing them feedback, with more and more tracks they now have good results at......and teams like Suzuki, Ducati, Kawasaki and even some Honda teams coming at Michelin. Japanese tyres......who's gonna get the most help in having tyres made specifically for them? Suzuki? Yep.

Hmm interesting thread, lots of hot air, but some worthy comments too.
Those pictures are cool, im loving the honda, kawa and yamis looks, especially the small tails.
That brake disc rotor looks like its made out of carbon or something? and wow look at the other detail, all the nuts and bolts are nothing like a road model.
Id back Honda to take the title because i want them too, 1st 2nd and 3rd this time!, but maybe ducati`s frolicking snowbunnys can do it, or yamaha because that rossi guy rides one, but were talking about all new bikes, anything could happen yet. Its the young guns that havnt crashed much yet that you have to watch out for.
From a racers point of view rather than a spectator, id have to say if those guys are heading towards bridgestones camp, and the rest are with michilen (sp), then maybe i should be getting some of those tyres. And where can i get one of those sexy bums for my bike?
