"Some of the kiwi riders expected to attend our festival meeting. (Some will be riding/racing or mingling for autograph hunters.):- Andrew Stroud, Bob Coleman, Bob Haldane, Brent Curtis, Chris & Richard Lawrance, Chris Haldane, Craig Sherriffs, Doug Fairbrother, Fred Cook, Gavin Dunlop, Graeme Dickson, Graeme Lacy, Harry Lowe, Hayden Fitzgerald, Hugh Anderson, Hugh Reynolds, Jason Easton, Jason McEwan, Jim Campbell, John Farnsworth, John Gabites, John Hepburn, Ken Dobson, Loren Poole, Mark Perry, Mike King, Nick Pedley, Nigel Bish, Nigel Healey, Noel McCutcheon, Paul McQuilkin, Paul Williams, Peter Leahy, Peter Pawson, Ray Breingan, Ray Laurent, Richard Scoular, Rob Coleman, Shaun Harris, Stev Clegg, Steve Bridge, Ross Graham, Paul Dobbs,Terry Fitzgerald, Terry Paviell, & Tom McLeary... Several riders have more than one bike, so if there are 400 riders, then there could be close to 600 bikes! If anyone wanted a motorcycling history lesson, then this is it.

Anyone else going along to this?

I'll be easy to spot. Surrounded by Benellis & Yamahas, old people and sporting black hair with piercings. Zang.

I dropped into Andy's last night to pick up my free tickets,he was having a BBQ and I was the only Kiwi there. He had just delivered some bikes for storage at McIntosh's,and he was having a Pommy barby. One had an Egli Vincent, one the John Player Norton, the others a Goldstar and a 7R....the Goldstar was in a van..Actualy it was a good evening.

My wife came home after shopping on tuesday night and said there was a Goldstar on a trailer parked outside the video shop...and she spent sometime telling me all about it.she didn't know if it was a DB32 or DB34 because it had no engine numbers...how come she said.It had some sort of Italian forks and a carb she didn't know, not a GP she said....she didn't have her reading glasses. She wanted to ask the guy some questions, but he went into the pizza shop and didn't come out.....the bike sparked some interest for her after all these years.I scored an extra ticket, and I think she might enjoy herself there this year.

Who needs a programe? I only watch a couple of races the whole day, most of the time I'm looking at bikes. It's not the racing I go for,it's the machinery.Programes will be available at the gate.I will be going with my wife this year, she hasn't been for over 20 years, and we were at the first one. We'll be there between 11.00am and miday, will wander around untill we are worn out and fried.

Ixion
3rd February 2007, 21:42
$25. Bit of a racket though, cos the $25 covers all three days. And as far as I know you can't get a one day ticket.

I went along today. Didn't see a soul that I knew. Or else they all saw me coming first.

Haven't been to Pukie since they butchered it. Gotta say, if there was a competition for the most boring racetrack in the world, from a spectators' point of view, Pukie now would win it hands down.

Only decent place to watch motorcycle racing is in the inside quarter of a slow corner, so you can see the riders twitching themselves silly under brakes, and setting up their line for the corner. And they're slow enough to get a good look. And where is the only slow corner now at Pukie? Right up the far end, where you can't go (as far as I could see - correction welcome), and from the grandstand the bikes are just specks. And all you see from the grandstand is the bikes barrelling past flat tit. Boring boring boring. Better fun wandering around, I reckon they shouldn't bother with the actual races.

And my usual grumble about the food. The choice was grease, grease, and grease. And nothing stronger than coffee to drink. Bah. Double bah. I want decent food, and a decent glass of wine. It's called CIVILISED.

Some interesting machinery, but.

I see Paul in NZ, was up there. Saw his MotoGuzzi thing parked, though I didn't see him. Took a photo of it. (Actually, might have been that other fellow , Dangerous?) . There was a Norge there (that used to be a washing machine - much the same thing I suppose). And one of the Greasy ones.

Since they got officious I hardly ever go to Puke now - we used to walk the whole infield on a race day....stopping for a while at each corner, walking along the back straight. Now there is nowhere for up close spectator action.I usually get a free weekend pass, this time I have two....if I don't get a pass I'll space out my visits every 2 or 3 years.

I went along today. Didn't see a soul that I knew. Or else they all saw me coming first.

I was there yesterday too, and while I saw a number of teutonic beasts parked, I didn't see you as I walked around. However, I seem to have taken a number of very similar photos, including the Vincent and the red Guzzi. I'll attach a few when my computer decides to recognise the camera again, it's a rather random process at times!

Walking around the pits looking at the machinery is also the main attraction for me, but it would have been useful to have some idea when some of the particular events were taking place. I guess they want your $5 for the programme?

Anyhow the Trials display is on today just after lunchtime, at 12:45pm. There is a demonstration ride by the Rotary Norton (very cool sound), Monocoque Norton and Britten, and the vintage classic road bike track parade before lunch.

I found standing by the armco on the pit side of the start line was a good place to experience the sights and sounds of the bikes as they lined up for the start. Just a bit tough on the ears ;)

Ixion
4th February 2007, 10:00
We must have walked by each other. I was by the pitside armco too . You'd have needed to look for a Titan not the Beemer. Program's not a lot of helo, just has the order of the races, no times.

Deary me ..we need better cognitive & navigation skills...bar was open on the third floor of the menbers stand,.... well signposted..wine ..rtds..2 montieths for $7.00....washed my cheese sarnies down a treat today....mine was the scruffiest ducati there :whocares: a black s2...did not see a titan though..saw a water buffalo and thought ..Ixion..saw "old guy"..lotsa neat machinery in the pits and car park..loved all the red triumpfs and matching pit popsies  took the long way tere and back :scooter:

Ixion
4th February 2007, 20:51
YES!. I found the grandstand bar today! Not well signposted though, the signs were all up in the CAGE carpark, none where the bikes were praked! I don't go looking in cager carparks. So I resile somewhat from my catering criticisms. But only somewhat, because they ran out of Speights (!!), and the only food was pies and sandwiches. Better than grease though, and a not too bad Pinot Gris was an acceptable (though pricey) substitute for Speights.

Lots more people there today, still didn't see anyone I knew. Mind you I wasn't looking. And if I had seen anyone, I'd have gone the other way .If you saw a Water Buffalo, that was me. Only one there. Titan was yesterday, get with the program

Speaking of which , for $5 ($1 today! Crooks) I think they could have made an effort to put some more times in even if only approximate.

Got more more piccies but idiot Wondoze won't admit that cameras exist (not made by Microshaft eh). So they'll have to wait until I fire up Ubuntu.

Surely Hugh Anderson on a Manx , or Ginger Malloy on the Bultaco is a Beethoven symphoney visualised in metal and leather? Beside them , ballet seems crude and awkward.

And what's with that ES2? The one with Sam Smith riding (that's GOT to be a fake name). I remember ES2s. Honkin heavy , long stroke, big flywheel sidecar haulers. NO WAY should one of them be seeing off a G50! Mind you, never thought I'd see a 3TA leading in a Goldie, either.

And some more

Hardley Doodleson
Very nice combo
EEK. Run. Dragonflies.
Greedy! Noone needs that many cylinders. Share with some of the singles
Side valves. I like side valves
Um . Ah , Yes., I'm sure some people will like it

Still going

Woo hoo . Another big two smoker
Techy one. A velo with an alternator! And a very neat conversion too. Note the Zener diode under the triple tree
Caption contest: Mine is "I *know* they're the same colour. But I still think the judges in the Groundsmans' Open will notice the ringin"
Ohh. That's a VERY nice sidevale. 1000cc of side valve.
I'd give it more like 8 out 10 myself
Very nice. I do like those Enfields/

4th February 2007, 22:25
i got there about 1400 today, after seeing manukau. Sat down with dad and a mate and enjoyed the last few racers.
Shit that 350 Bulltaco flew - awesome stuff.
Where were all the classic jappas racing - i was a bit ticked to not see a single Z1 or a TZ race.

Ixion
4th February 2007, 22:26
Yes, I'm STILL going.

Not many of those around. And how small and neat and compact it is
Personal reminisence. I had one like that with the bathtub
And mine was a magneto too. Not so common, most had a distributor
Yes. it's a side valve it IS worth a second look
I had a Tiger Cub too, but not a trials one

There was supposed to be some sort of Trials exhibition, but I couldn't find it. Or I missed it cos I was rather late on account of delays to get petrol (Petal is blurdy thristy) , and a broken down Daytona on the motorway. Which was a pity. I've always had trials as one of the things on my "List of stuff to try before I die". I've long since proven that I can't ride fast, so I may as well prove I can't ride slow either.

Ivan
4th February 2007, 22:52
did you get any photos of the Triumph Sparton in the Post Classic class or the GRT600 single?

Ixion
4th February 2007, 23:01
No, only what I've posted.

Motu
5th February 2007, 08:54
Carl Garnet's Spartan? He was there as usual, had 3 of his bikes at the trials display as well.Eric Bone was telling me he went for a leak at 2.30am saturday night and found Carl outside with his engine completely stripped down, even had the crank out. Then I found him sunday morning in the covered pits helping someone with their bike, next time I saw him he was riding his Norton and Triumph at the trials display, the guy has so much positive energy it's scary.

I took my wife this year,it's over 20 years since she last went, and she really enjoyed herself. She got to meet some friends she hasn't seen for a long time, and to meet others she has only heard about....like Eric Bone who was a legend when they both worked at Laurie Sommers, but she never met him,she being only a part time detailer. For some reason she was really taken with Rudges, and spent a long time looking at them. She is a bit more curious than me,and often stopped to ask questions of owners, finding out interesting details. She also showed excessive interest in Enfields, taking photos of every single one there, checking them out in detail and getting brochures....I think her mind is set on a path to final conclusion.....

My short term memory means I've forgotten all the wonderfull machines I was so impressed with, and I didn't take many photos because I was sure I'd remember. The orange Eldorado was stunning, every sidecar was interesting (the Goldflash had an A7 engine, heh, heh) I saw the waterbucket but didn't wander over for a look.Just so many interesting bikes in the spectator parking area.I was looking for photos of myself there Ixion,we probably passed somewhere....I had a lot of old mates in the green Egli pit,and spent some time there. The Experimental BSA is always my favorite, and my wife was suitable impressed being a BSA single fan - there is nothing on this bike that hasn't been played with, and I made Big Dave take a photo of it.A laided down motor, ultra short stroke with a very short barrel, external flywheel, leading link forks, reversed steering head,I am totaly impressed with it.

Got some photos I'll put on tonight.

Ivan
5th February 2007, 09:03
Nah I ment Doug Fairbrothers one,
It was a Triumph 750cc Sparton it has blue Norton pipes on it and lastyear it had a Small purple tank It was once a scrambler bike and also broke the world speed record

I was just wondering

This year it had the blue pipes, clip ons, Rear sets, Vesco seat and anew tank on it looked really trick

Did I tell you about the time I found a Spartan frame in the in organic collection? I swapped it for an outboard.

What?
5th February 2007, 10:18
.Eric Bone was telling me he went for a leak at 2.30am saturday night and found Carl outside with his engine completely stripped down, even had the crank out..

Carl's Faber Puissant framed Bonneville broke the crank on Saturday, so he was up late building up a motor out of spare parts and some of the race motor. "Just threw it together and hoped", but it seemed to go pretty good - I think he ended up 3rd overall.

Ivan
5th February 2007, 10:56
Man these classic guys have my respect.
That is awsome as full credit to them,

Considering they would be tired from riding and those wouldnt be no easy bike to ride the vibrations etc wouldwear you out in a hurry and then spend your night rebuilding your engine maybe have a beer or 2 or 3:rockon:
THen sleeping

THEN BACK UP RACING

Respect to all of you guys who did it

Haha

Theres not many of them spartons around is there Motu?

Very nice - we were looking for the Scott's ''secret clutch''.

Did anyone see the ''rust rod''? A bare metal rod,you could see the welding for the roof chop and other body work....not a scrap of paint, everything just bare metal. There was a Featherbed, forget what motor, gosh,it may of even had a Norton in it - anyway,it was bare metal too,and maybe just clear laqured.Bare metal and all the brazed joints - might come as a surprise to some that most of the British frames were brazed not welded.

Oh,the Mini Max! What a little gem - a perfect 175 copy of the 250 Super Max,everything just smaller.I didn't know such a thing existed...do they,or did someone make it out of old Honda parts? I have a photo here of a nice MV Augusta,350 I think, there was another smaller model further down. The Morgan with the big Matchless V twin,I've seen that on the road in use before.

I came away from there thinking I don't like modern bikes with their bulk and clutter - there were so many simple plain bikes, engines frames wheels and a seat and bars, all you need.I used to think a Trident was a monster, now it's a small lithe switchblade....many modern 250's seem bigger.

Motu
6th February 2007, 11:57
Here's an example of something I liked - just so simple and clean,Roadholder forks and a Commando front brake to bring it up to the late '60's.

I'm sending this photo of the pre unit Bonny to my brother in Canada - in 1971/72 he had a Triumph chop with an 8 stud Bonny head. The motor out of the bike was an ex speedway sidecar,an alky burner and the head was ported with huge valves.I sidecar racer wanted the head and they swapped, the alloy head not being suitable for alky.Anyway,it had extra central sparkplugs, and I never saw another like it.Although it reappeared in the late '70's in a mates parts collection.I have talked to the owner of this bike before, and we discussed the head - he said it had central plugs, and as it was a restoration he had the holes filled and remachined. If you look really hard you can see the new metal.Nice buzz in 2007 to see stuff you held in your hands in 1971.

Yep gotta agree with you Motu. After riding a motard I'm buggered if I know why manufacturers don't make road bikes or more general purpose dual sport machines with similar specs. They aren't anything super special, there's not a huge amount of hp, simple frames, just decent brakes, decent suspension and absolutely nothing superfluous.

Haha, I just realised the last time I was at Puke Keke Rosberg was giving the locals a driving lesson....seems like several lifetimes ago...

Shame the racing isn't really set up for spectating but Puke is in it's death throes I reckon, so hopefully it'll be at a more suitable arena in the near future. If I'd gone along I'd still be rapt they were putting on a demo, the sound is half the attraction for me, I'd quite happily sit there with my eyes closed soaking it all in.

Motu
7th February 2007, 11:42
Definatly the sounds - old bikes and open exhausts are just heaven.Modern bikes are too refined, and even with open exhausts just sound boring.Having a 7R back off the throttle while you are strolling down pit lane is like having the seven horsemen ride past.

And the engineering - I am awed, and embaressed by the level of engineering skills possesed by the average Kiwi today.30 years ago with my meager mechanical skills and working in workshops with a lot of gear I was able to do things to bikes my contempories were unable to do..I am still a bodger - but Joe Bloggs far surpasses me now,the workmanship is stunning, the magnatude of the work overbearing....I just don't know how people get the time to churn out these projects when it takes all my time just to keep a bike on the road.

Oh,and as we were coming over the Tuakau bridge on sunday the Ferrari club were having a club day down SH22,I've never seen so many Ferrari's....a billion dollars going the other way.....
