Hi.
I am looking at importing a tube bender from the states.
It's worth around $1000.
How do I find out if I need to pay import tax and how mush it will be?
Thanks.

Email customs... they replied pretty damn promptly to me. They've also got a list of things and the duty payable on their website.

the customs website is pretty good for things like that, I'll bet you won't have to pay duty but will have pay GST....just google customsNZ and it'll pop right up, then look under imports..easy

I mailed customs but they have not replied back yet.
I am just wondering. If I order the stuff online and I get it shipped to my street address(UPS). Where does Customs come in?
Do they leave a tax invoice on my parcel or what?

Products purchased from the US and having them delivered directly to your door is hit and miss with customs. In my experience, about 60 - 70% of stuff I bring in by-passes customs.
If customs intercept your parcel, you will get a lovely letter in the post saying you must pay (you can use a credit card over the phone) before they release your package.
There is no duty on motorcycles as we don't build any here so there's no market to protect. If we did they would be worse quality than Chinese bikes and even Suzukis (hard to imagine but true).

Response from customs...
The Tariff of New Zealand under Tariff item 8462.21.00 and 8462.29.00 indicate
a rate of duty of 7% on metal bending machines.
However 'Bending and end forming machines for shaping pipe, bar, wire, flatstock,
round or square tube and similar' are covered by concession reference 987473K
free of duty.
Bend forming machines not exceeding 60mm-140mm radii capacity are excluded from
the concession (concession ref.999982F).
I am a bit on the slow side... Does that mean it's free?

Wanna make me some alloy tubes for my subframe? I want to cut the bottom rails out, and replace them with some new ones that rather than being straight, are bent and hidden. Sorta like this piccy... I hear to bend alloy tubing without crushing it, you follow this process: Make your oxy/acy torch run smokey, soot up the tube, run the torch normally, heat up the pipes... when the soot burns off, then make the bend. Apparently... you'll find out soon enough

Trap for young-ish players - the GST also applies to the cost of the freight, even though that was paid for in the US. Sods
IME, anything sent by DHL/ UPS/ Fedex etc will be hit with customs charges and GST, and the freight is an arm and leg. The post is a better bet. My dyno controller came through GST free (saved $250) - woohoo!

I know...
12.5% more for GST.
Almost 50% to get it by UPS.
No wonder you can't get it here!!!
