View Full Version : A interesting(?) idea from Japan

Somebody in Japan has way too much time on their hands - a bike to tow cars!

Must handle like a.., well it mustn't handle surely. Not to mention the additional strain on the bikes frame, suspension, and brakes.

Duck and cover, the repost police will be all over you in a matter of moments...

I do like the idea though. You can always trust the Japanese for finding more advanced ways of doing old things.

Repost, someone posted this about 3 weeks ago under a transformers thread. But it's a cool idea eh, looks crazy. But why use a bike to do a truck's job? It'll cost heaps to modify the goldwing like that, and only a few thousand to hitch a trailer up to the back of a light truck

Hey how bout a two wheeled tractor?

I suppose you all gonna say thats already been done - (but I won't mention the name of what they called it - as I might show my prejudice)

That's not Japan, or anything Japanese (apart from the Goldwing, I suppose) anyway. Mainland China, I think, with those blue numberplates.

No way. I admit the project is very Korean-y -- those wonderful people are building robots with guns to protect the North-South border :D

But Koreans don't tend to write in Chinese.

It is a swedish innovation

Honda Gold Wing that has been converted to a tow bike! It is actually in use in Sweden, where the man who designed and runs it claims its capacity to cut through backed up traffic gives him a competitive advantage over other tow truck operators

Aww, don't take it personally, on the internet Valentino himself could post something and the repost po-po would be all over it. I searched for 'Japan' and 'Goldwing' (as I remember one of the earlier threads mentioned Japan) and found a previous thread, and have now merged them, all at no charge!

But Hilux's don't break down.

Wonder how it would fare trying to tow a stagecoach bus off the bridge? That seems to be a fairly regular occurrence...

I could only see this being used for the smallest of vehicles. Imagine a wet day trying to tow a car on a bike.

Not to mention the weight of the car would tend to push the bike around. Imagine going down hill and then trying to turn. The weight of the car would tend to push you straight ahead.

And then there is the whole issue of braking.

The more I think about this - it must be a hoax.

We own a bunch of Tow Trucks and hoax or not, would never get certed here for anything heavier than a motorbike and even then you'd be pushing it LOL

Looks funny though!

Take a closer look.
There are brake calipers in the trailer wheels. It looks like the trailer brakes are slaved to the bike.
Having driven in Tokyo which has traffic problems that make Auckland's trivial, I can see huge value in a vehicle that can nip through traffic jams to retrieve a break down and clear the way.

Hitcher
23rd June 2009, 11:50
And then there is the whole issue of braking.

Hitch load under braking is easily remedied. The biggest issue would be up hill hauling and hauling on any surface where traction for the bike's rear wheel became an issue.

I suspect that these things have been designed to haul vehicles comparatively short distances. A rig like this could get to motorway breakdowns and crashes a lot easier and quicker than a full blown tow truck, and could drag cars a few hundred metres or so to clear a path to release backed up vehicles.

Taz

So no good for the Auckland to Wellington haul then?

I wonder if this is listed in the Goldwing accessory catalogue...

Take a fool to tow a car with a motorbike, The amount of good it would be you might as well just push the car out of the way.

Brakes aren't going to make it safe.

Repost! (more'n once)

There's no way the Gummint'd buy these - the standard LeadWing is humungoulsy expensive, so these would be astronomically expensive. They're currently ditching patrol cars to save money, so why wuld they buy some expensive toys like these?

It'd be kewl though...

I reckon with all that gubbinses on the back, they'd wheelie easy.
