View Full Version : Binned the Bird this morning

Boy am I pissed off, was minding my own business on the way to work as I do every day when I binned it:angry:

Some nice prick had dropped grit on the Elleslie Panmure motorway on ramp, as I turned left onto the motorway on ramp (a nice sweeping left hander) the front end let go.

The Damage wouldn't have been so bad but the bike slid up the in side curb and punched a hole in the sump, oil everywhere. I had hit the kill switch so hopefully no real damage, the crash bungs did there job and if it wasn't for the curb the fairing wouldn't have broken, still it could have been worse.

I'm in one piece and the bike is at cyclespot were it was heading today anyway for it's 24km service, just a bit more for them to do.

What a bummer. Sorry to hear that. Similar thing happened to me soon after getting my last bike. Chin up

Glad to hear you are ok mate. Really bad news about the bike though.

Fucking monkeys leaving shite all over the motor way ramp should have there face rubbed in it.

Still on the upside, you will only need to pay for your insurance excess, the service will probably be included.

FYI, this is not the best way to do an oil change.

ah that sucks.

looking on the bright side, though, it could have been worse (i.e. you havent mentioned any injury to you)

Hopefully it won't affect your travel plans. Good you're ok though.

No not the best way to do an oil change!!

As for injuries not much just some nice brusing on the left arm and leg, says it all for good gear. Am pissed about the new Sidi boots, only had them a month and now the left one has nice hole in the toe, new I should have got the one with sliders:yes:

23rd January 2007, 09:47
Boots can be repaired if on a budget, my el cheapo boots (read: free! Thanks Stonechucka) have been through the wars and are doing me fine, for now. One day I might end up buying some better ones. Still, depends on how much it costs for you to patch them up, might be just as well to buy a new pair.

Glad to hear you're alright, and the bike isn't going to be too bad, don't worry about it! Still, gotta be frustrating when it's just because of some grit chucked on the road. Condolences.

At least you are still standing, not much you can do once into what you would expect to be an easy sweeping bend.

Sorry to hear about your crash and the damage to the bike, whilst glad you are not injured.

However , I that go up that ramp at least once a day, and there is ALWAYS gravel on it. I'm surprised you didn't spot it, it's a pretty good field of view. I always move across the gravel into the right hand lane and then open up. The right hand lane is usually clear of gravel. You have to cross the piled up stuff in the triangle between the lanes first. It's always there.

Ahh bugger, your bike was a beaut too! Glad to hear you're okay, a hole in the boot is a good problem to have when no loss of skin or other injuries occurred!

Glad no idiot cager from behind collected you :sweatdrop Any idea how long it'll take to get the BB back on the road and flying again?

Having been riding for 18 years I do look were I'm going, it was the north bound on ramp I was coming from the Great South Rd side and I used it every day. Yesterday there was nothing in the lane today there was shit all over both lanes.

Sure if I had to stop for traffic it wouldn't have happen, but you can't second guess these things. SHIT HAPPENS that's what insurance is for, and as this is my first ever claim I don't think I've done to bad.

Cheers

At this stage it's not looking good, find out tommorrow but there taking 3-4 weeks just for parts. If that's the case I'll have soming to say about it.

As for the body as the day goes on the worse it gets

Maybe time for a beer

Speeding is their big fantasy problem, so they (The Authorities) let careless bastards cast rubbish all over our roads to slow us down.

It's cheaper than hiring more traffic cops and keeps the speed down sometimes and bikes off the road for a while. :bye:

Glad you are OK, shame about your bike, hope you are back riding again soon. Cheers John.

Bad news.

Sickening feeling when the front end lets go....not a lot can be done to recover. Did the same on RG150 after New Year - luckily the tiny bike just bounced. cosmetic damage only.

Glad you're okay.

That sucks mate :(

It's time something was done about all the crap that is allowed on our roads.

Roadworks is another thing too. They give a new seal job the 30kmh treatment until the car tracks are all cleared then take the signs away so that when we come along using the full lane to enter, apex and exit, we find loose gravel on our apex points and it's all on as well. :(

Glad you're ok mate. Hurts dunnit :(

Glad to hear you're OK.
Luckily there wasnt anyone bearing down on top of you from behind.
Knowing that corner people normally look to their right and without knowing whats in fron of them could have easily gone over the top of you...:shit:

State of the inner city roads is shit at the moment. For example I travel up and down Hillsborough Road and the carry over of cement and gravel onto the road coupled with the re-direction and blockage of traffic to secondary streets has already caused accidents.

Hope you're riding soon.

Thank's for all the support guys, went and had a look at the bike this morning and didn't think it looked that bad. Then the workshop guy starts listing the parts for repair

Lower left fairing (lower right is also scratched)
Alternator cover
Left side exhaust
Front wheel rim
Lefthand wing mirror
new tyre's as both are soaked in oil
new oil and filter

so it soon add's up, I'll just have to wait and see what the insurance has to say.

Cheers

Do you have to replace like for like when carrying out the repairs?
Don't know if you are interested but if the insurance company basically signs off on the repair quote can you then spend the money how you see fit?
For example: rather than replace the stock OEM exhaust you may prefer to fit an aftermarket system. Maybe it's cheaper to repair rather than replace the scratched panels and you can then fit a power commander or heated grips or something else that strikes your fancy.
I decided to take my 916 motocrossing one day (sad, hamfisted story) with the upshot being I had an insurance claim for a reasonable amount. I basically ended up with a "budget" from the insurance company and after dicussing various options with the guys handling the repairs we came up with a better bike at the end of it.

Not sure what the story is with that but will find out. The shop has come back with a quote for about $7000 including labour. Now just waiting to hear from the insurance company to see what they say ie will they pay $1300 for a new wheel rim or just get it re painted for $300.

It really sux's not having a bike.

Not to mention the cars dropping oil, the import diesels that drop oil and fuel from poorly looked after vehicles , and then theres the poor bikie who couldnt help drain away a few litres of oil, bastage roadwork fellas should be sweeping the road just for us, but then that means trucks and we all know that trucks are evil, lol

when there is a new decent 50cm-1m wide 50-100m+ long diesel spill on most of the roads i ride every day it's usually a truck they overfill the bottom tanks and then it pisses out as teh excess fuel sits on the top of the tank or expands out a breather i don't know how it works. i've seen them go past doing it. just more common lately for some reason esp in my area. and in the middle of a corner in the wet it's not cool. and oil stains from the 4wds and cars are not too bad, usually just screw up rolling stoppies on them at the lights. in saying that most trucks are okay it's just the few cowboys that wreck it for the rest. like fireengines, bunch of hoons. what if a grandma pulled out infront of them or something they couldn't stop in time. jeeesuz.

Yup your right , most Trucks systems mean that there is a return from the injector pump which sends unused fuel back to the tank ...with the heat build up through friction the fuel coming back to the tank is hot where as the fuel in the tank is cool so you get a reaction and also any air gets returned as well causing an expansion in the tank.
now if a truckie overfills his tank which happens often as a lot of drivers arnt aware that the the tank has written on it not to fill to the top due to expansion , where it then blows out any breather hole.

So yeah, it is a prob and i agree with you .

Even tho i drive trucks my self you have a very valid point.

On a side note I used to work in onehunga about 14 yrs ago and used to travel from the Nth Shore to onhunga every day on my bike.

One morning heading down rockfeild rd by penrose High School a 3rd former decided he would play chicken with the traffic on a ped xing he would wait for a car to come then run out in front of it.

I was behind a car...probably about 4 car lengths when said little sod ran out in front of the car in front of me , he promptly stood on the anchors , as did I ....this is where it went pear shaped....the house before the xing had had its drains re down and as a result there was fine scoria out front of his house which i hit and my front went out from under me i slide down the gutter and my bike carried on into the back of an insurance assessor from State.
I swear my bike actuall went faster as it went down the road .

Long story short he blamed me and my insurer Sun Alliance listened to me and paid out , and i didnt loose my no claims as they deemed the little shit to be responsible ( cops got him as ther was one down the rd who saw it all(he was off duty but grabbed the little shit as he ran off).

Anyways cheer up Big B your all right cept for a bit of hurt pride like I was...Glad your ok too.

Ouch sorry to hear BigB. What slowpoke said is correct, it is the insurance company settling with you. Not the bike shop. So once you have a settlement from the insurance you can decide how to spend the money. E.g you can buy cheaper OEM Alternator covers from US than buying Honda items... etc. Also with your left hand exhaust is it a factory item? And do you want a factory item again?
