Police are changing the way they deal with prisons in the Wellington region.

They are setting up a separate unit to manage violence and incidents at Rimutaka prison to relieve the workload from local police.

The unit will be based in Upper Hutt and will also work alongside the region's two other smaller prisons.

Wellington crime services manager Detective Inspector Harry Quinn says the new initiative is nothing to do with an increase in violence in prisons.

But he says there is naturally more crime in prison and the surrounding communities.

The new unit is expected to be up and running by July.

They're setting up a special unit to bash crims, so the local cops can get on with catching more of them?

Geez, you all rush out and join Mad McVicar's "Sensible" Sentencing Trust so that convicts are never parolled or pardoned, and then moan because the poor old taxpayer has to fork out more cash to keep these folk locked away, with all that that entails.

Can you please decide what it is exactly you want?

Prisoners get divided up into two categories. Those whom society would be better off without, and those whom can return to society after paying pennance.

Hang/Gas/Shoot the first lot, the others put in minimum cost facilities like Joe Arpaio's tent city. No TV, no aircon, no playstation.

Prisoners do NOT deserve to live in luxury facilities.

I agree let them be punnished not give them a holiday. It's turning into too much of a nanny state
