View Full Version : Question for car valuers

In the next couple of weeks I will be selling my car, and I am curious to know what a fair market value for it is likely to be. I am woefully out of touch with the world of four-wheeled vehicles and would appreciate all constructive assistance.
Subaru Impreza HXs 1.8, 1992 (Japanese import), first registered in NZ in 1998 (I'm its only NZ private owner). 92,000km. Five-speed manual. Has current warrant and a set of Dunlop FM901 tyres in good order. Towbar and connector plug. Blaupunkt Las Vegas CD stereo/radio. Metallic silver. Condition consistent with its age and mileage. Will throw in handsfree phone kit and phone (display on phone is fucked but it still works).

You'd be lucky to get $3000 for a 1992 Japper of any kind on the private market (provided it's not a highly sought-after make/model or has something very special about it).
Between $2500 - $3000 would be my estimate.
Especially when dealers don't want much more than that (yes I know it has more kms on it);

Are you sure it's a '92 model? Earliest I have seen in the Impreza range is 1993. Regardless, the only thing going against it is it's age (15yrs old now), pluses are 1.8l (opposed to gutless 1.5 and 1.6), manual and good km/s for it's age. To sell on a yard down here I'd price it at around the $5990 mark. Private sale I'd put it out at the high 5's, wouldn't take anything less than 5k.
(Just rang a wholesaler friend of mine, he valued it at up to $3000 to buy, allow $500 recon, sell for $5990.)

First example has done nearly twice the km's and is auto. Second example still has very high km's (in comparison) and is the unloved 1600. The 1.8 commands better money, especially with the spanish 'box.

At a dealer for sure, but the private market in NZ is pretty wierd...people don't tend to pay as much attention to those things.
I'm shocked at your suggestion to ask for over $5000 privately when you would only put it on your yard at $5990. You generally pay a few thousand less for a car privately than from a yard in my experience...but you're the car salesman, I believe you!

You'd be the first to believe a car salesman then! A 5dr 5spd economical car like that with less than 100,000km on the clock will hold it's value reasonably well, unlike the other examples you highlighted. And in Christchurch the market is very competitive, especially in the lower price segment. It's a tricky one really, it should be worth less but I just know that with those spec's it's worth a bit more. I agree with the prices on the other cars, if one of my guys was to trade either we would cash it up immediately, but if we traded Mr H's vehicle (for the right money) I'd seriously look at retailing it as the spec's are decent enough to get a quick sale.
The difference between yard retail (not an inflated price, but true value) and private retail is getting smaller and smaller all the time. Also your dealing with a smaller amount, on a more expensive vehicle I'd agree with you.

Seriously, there are sharks out there, but if you smell trouble you should back out straight away. Don't allow yourself to get screwed over by the cowboys who give the industry a bad name.

I guess that's the difference. Hitcher's vehicle is under the magic 100,000km bracket which gives it extra appeal.
At a yard, it's easy for the salesperson to talk that up, but it doesn't seem to make as big of an impact on the private market.
The other factor to consider is time restraints, some people are prepared to put up with tyre kickers and 4-5 months of advertising to get that good money...where others prefer to sell the car within a few weeks, have less drama, but pocket a bit less coin.
Although I'm not claiming to know anywhere near as much as you about car selling onearmbandit...I'm not new to it. I've bought/sold over 30 cars in my relatively short time on the road, all privately...I have never once bought from a dealer. The private market is a very different kettle of fish when buying AND selling.

I agree with you completely, private sales are a different kettle of fish. But his Impreza has some decent specs, 1.8l. manual, silver, and under 100,00km. I just don't think he should sacrifice it. Hey if someone offered $4800 for example he would probably be wise to take it, depending on his circumstances.

2-3K boss, sorry - but unless its mint you wont get any more than 3.
I would only pay 5 max for a mint 92-3.
K's dont mean jack anymore sadly as there are too many people out there disconnecting odometers.

Fair call, I see your point.
I'll still stick by my estimate, but if Hitcher's a very patient man that $5K will most likely be attainable.

Yes they do, it's one part of the picture that helps give a price when taken into account with age, features, desirability, etc. Hitcher claims the condition is consistant with the age and km's travelled, so there is your indicator.

I'm with the nay sayers - it's worth 4/5ths of fuck all.The used car market is worse than global warming, everything has melted down and we are up to our eyeballs with quality cars no one can move. The market is more than flooded - someone has built a dam and the cars just keep pouring into the country and have backed up the system. The septic is full and can take no more crap.Subaru's are choice in the demo derby.Non turbo Impressa's are not even fit for a girls car.

Stick to fixing cars Motu, I'll stick to selling them (well running a yard that sells them). My price has now been confirmed to me by two dealers, one who wants to see the car asap as he has a buyer for it! Had to tell him that I'm not trading it, just helping a friend get a price for it. He finished the convo by saying 'well if there is a chance let me know'.

Hey, he's only got one arm -- tying a tie must be a major challenge for him!
And good advice thanks guys. I'm tossing up whether or not to faff around doing the Trademe/private sale thing (I am a bit jaded towards Trademe after getting red repped by the guy who walked away from my Zeal sale) or just taking it down to Turners and taking my luck on the fall of the hammer.
Of course any Kiwibikers who may want to stump up with some readies on an as-is-where-is basis could be in luck... Hey, you can even have it for the weekend and take it for a fang if you're really keen!
FWIW it has been serviced every six months by Harbour City Subaru (just been bought out by Armstrongs) ever since I've had it.

Figure this is as good a place as any to ask.
How much would a 1995 Toyota Camry, 1.8L auto with just over 200,000km and a few small dents in the left-hand side be worth, and how should I go about selling it?

Gotta get me one of these.
I would have guessed closer to 4k, it's a buyers market. A mate recently sold a shitty 1989 XF Falcon Ute, went out and bought two Commodores for the same money, a '97 VR and a '98 VS with all the bits.
