View Full Version : 'That' kind of bike...

I got mine through Kiwibike and cost $719. It is Swann insurance but not sure on track days and rallys. The not covered section includes this clause: "taking part in, or practicing for any race, time trial, rally, sprint, drag race, or any similar motor sports, or use on any motorcycle race track unless you are participating in an approved rider course with our consent." I would like to go on the next track day and do the rusty nuts (a rally??), so will need to clarify the cover or change insurer?

Is there an insurer who provides cover for a rally.

Would doubt a rally would fall in to any category but would pay to check and keep us advised!

Going to pick the brand new Speed Triple up tommorrow.

Thought I'd organise insurance with the usual for us, AMI, where we've been lifetime customers with everything with them.

They said they'd only insure the Triumph because of us being the above, as they are quote ..... 'that kind of bike'........

$1600 a year, $800 excess for a crash and $1500 for theft.
The VTR was only $600 a year.

Fuck's sake I'm 42, not a 18yr old hoon.

Well its covered for now but I'm not happy and yeah think I'll look elsewhere, and I know theres countless threads on insurance but from memory is it Classic Insurance or something like that that most of you guys use?

'That kind of bike ffs'..........

.....and yeah, I know what they meant by that..........fuckers.

Dooly I got the same sort of response for the X11 from my broker with similar prices, I am 39 riding 20+ years no claims yada yada. There are definitely better deals out there. I eventually went through the Honda Riders Club and it was circa $450p.a. one rider, cant remember excess but not that flash eg somewhere around a grand.

BTW great choice of Bike, hope you enjoy it

It might seem strange, but the best kept secret to cheap bike insurance is the bank. They buy the insurance wholesale off the same underwriters as the big insurance companies, so they can actually give you better protection, for less. I'd challenge everyone here to give BNZ a call (0800 275 269) just to get a quote for your bike. You could be very surprised and saving muchos cash.

And yes, I'm with them. I got my bike insured with them, on my learners, never had a bike before or had it insured, and I paid $160 (no, that's not a typo, $160) for full insurance for the whole year. $500 excess, bike valued at $2000. Granted it's a 250 and an old low value bike, but I was on my learners and under 25.

Give it a go. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
Oh, and you don't have to have your bank accounts with the BNZ.

Dooley. You probably have the hawkes bay premium. They always assume that someone from the Hawkes bay has been damaged by pesticides, either in the womb or very shortly after childbirth. Explain that you grew up somewhere else and they will reduce the premium instantly.

Oh, and you don't have to have your bank accounts with the BNZ.

In my experience, the bank gives great deals but doesn't actually pay the claim until you go to court.

Westpac dropped us right in the poo with a claim for broken glass. They didn't pay the guy, despite approving the claim, who did the work (who put us with Baycorp), until we went through small claims court.

I will never ever use a bank for anything except an operating account. They're a bunch of thieving scum bags who make money off everything you do. 50c for an eftpos transaction? Puhlease.

Dooly, if you want an Insurance company who will bend over backwards to get everything right, provide competitive quotes, and never ever talk to you like you're an idiot, go with Classic Cover. Other people may better them by $50 a year, but Classic did some pretty incredible stuff for me, and I'll pimp them 'til the cows come home.

Good advice there Jim2. I've not had to claim on my insurance yet, other than contents which went smoothly, but that could be a major issue if I did have to. Although, having said that, BNZ use a different underwriter than Westpac... Still, I very much doubt any other company could quote something within $500 of the $160 BNZ have me paying. Still, I'm going to give Classic Cover a ring when I get back to NZ anyway, just because it never hurts to know.

Too right. Even after my 'act of god' bollocks which wiped out my no claims with AMI, Classic still insured me WITH full claims history as they said the situation was double bollocks.

i bought my brand new 2006 zx10r in november my lifetime insurance company wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole (AA insurance).
i was recommended by a number of people to go to star insurance...so i did.
anyways i lowsided on the hill going into the front straight at pukekohe last sunday (KIWITRACKDAYS), the bike got airborne and hit the wall, it was a write off.
today i am going down to pick up my new zx10r from mt eden motorcycles.
that's a 6 day turnaround people...from crash to replacement!
this includes adding all of my mods that i had on the original bike, oggy knobs, race brakes, braided lines, ferrodo pads and aftermarket exhaust etc.
the insurance was $1300 per year and $750 excess, well worth it for a $20,000+ bike.
alot of hard earned money and love went into my bike, these guys appreciate what we invest in our machines.

so anyway now i'm humming this old song in my head...i think it's a willy nelson tune...

i'm on the road again...
just can't wait to get on the road again...
doin twisties an sniffin gas fumes with my friends
i just can't wait to get on the road again.

Did you get 'special' insurance to cover track days or did the 'accident' happen on the public road outside the track?

http://www.asb.co.nz/story389.asp?

I heard good things about protecta when I bought my bike. But price wise they didn't seem any cheaper than my current insurance company State.....so I went with state, despite having heard all the rumours about them being one of the worst companies to get a claim from.

I can't comment about BNZ, but ASB simply resell state, and can offer pretty much only the same prices.

My interpretation is the word "rally" refers to competitive rallies...not the general gathering of bikers at a common location for purposes of "socialisation".

Got the beast today.
What a wicked bike to ride, had only 1km on it when I got it.
Put 110km on it now and hit 165 a few times, just qiuetly.
Micron cans, seat cowl and hugger on.
Awesome engine feel, good loudness and a nice popping from the mufflers on deceleration every time.
Early days, but its a pleasure to ride, wicked torgue and massive acceleration and roll on.
The gearbox is average tho, even compared to my old CB900, the gear selection does'nt feel positive and I found a neutral between 3rd & 4th, but reading some Triumph sites, they say its quite common.
But, as said, early days and I'm more than happy.
Heres some pics.

Well, you wouldn't want to do it too often, of course they will start getting a bit nervous - all Insurance Companies would. I am impressed with the report though, a good news story!

We're with State, have been forever with all our insurances and have always had excellent service from them! I have nothing at all negative to say based on our experiences. Then again, we've been with Westpac for many years, too and I've only got high praise for the way we have been treated by them as well! Maybe we're a bit different?

Likewise I have been with State forever for home, car and business insurance. Their quoted premium for the bike was way to high. A few years ago I went through the same exercise when I wanted to insure a power boat. State's premium was double the cost of cover through a specialist boat insurer.
