How could you forget Arlo Guthrie's The Motorcycle Song?

"I don't want a pickle
Just wanna ride on my motorcycle
And I don't want a tickle
I'd rather ride on my motorcycle
And I don't want to die
Just wanna ride on my motorcy...cle"

Sigh..... At the risk of repeating myself....

Richard Thompson's song '1952 Vincent Black Lightning' is THE motorcycle song (apart from Arlo of course)

'Born to be Wild' has to be included because of Easy Rider

Black Denim Trousers (The Diamonds ??) is a sure fire winner too...

He wore black denim trousers and motorcycle boots
And a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back
He had a hopped-up 'cicle that took off like a gun
That fool was the terror of Highway 101

Well, he never washed his face and he never combed his hair
He had axle grease imbedded underneath his fingernails
On the muscle of his arm was a red tattoo
A picture of a heart saying "Mother, I love you"

He had a pretty girlfriend by the name of Mary Lou
But he treated her just like he treated all the rest
And everybody pitied her and everybody knew
He loved that doggone motorcycle best

He wore black denim trousers and motorcycle boots
And a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back
He had a hopped-up 'cicle that took off like a gun
That fool was the terror of Highway 101

Mary Lou, poor girl, she pleaded and she begged him not to leave
She said "I've got a feeling if you ride tonight I'll grieve"
But her tears were shed in vain and her every word was lost
In the rumble of an engine and the smoke from his exhaust

Then he took off like the Devil and there was fire in his eyes!! He
said "I'll go a thousand miles before the sun can rise."
But he hit a screamin' diesel that was California-bound"
And when they cleared the wreckage, all they found

Was his black denim trousers and motorcycle boots
And a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back
But they couldn't find the 'cicle that took off like a gun
And they never found the terror of High way 1 oh 1

Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris new album (All the Road Running) has a couple with bike references...

The Title track (of course) is about the Wall of Death so it qualifies..

A million miles our vagabond heels
Clocked up beneath the clouds
They're counting down to show time
When we do it for real with the crowds
Air miles are owing
But they don't come for free
And they don't give you any for pain

But if it's all for nothing
All the roadrunning's
Been in vain

The rimshots come down like cannon fire
And thunder off the wall
There's a man in every corner
And each one is giving his all

This is my fife
This is my drum
So you never will hear me complain

And if it's all for nothing
All the roadrunning's
Been in vain

All the roadrunning
All the roadrunning

Well if you're inclined
To go up on the wall
It can only be fast and high
And those who don't like the danger
Soon find something different to try
When there's only a ringin' in your ears
And an echo down memory lane

But if it's all for nothing
All the roadrunning's
Been in vain

All the roadrunning, all the roadrunning
All the roadrunning, all the roadrunning

The show's packing up
I sit and watch the convoy
Leaving town
There's no pretending I'm not a fool,
For riding around and around
Like the pictures you keep of your old wall of death
You showed me one time on the plane

But if it's all for nothing
All the roadrunning's
Been in vain

A million miles of vagabond sky
Clocked up above the clouds
I'm still your man for the roaming
For as long as there's roamin' allowed

There'll be a rider
And there'll be a wall
As long as the dreamer remains

And if it's all for nothing
All the roadrunning's
Been in vain

All the roadrunning, all the roadrunning
All the roadrunning, all the roadrunning
All the roadrunning, all the roadrunning
All the roadrunning, all the roadrunning

Staggerwing has a bike related verse and it's in 'cos it's rude..

If i was a motorcycle
A vincent red rapide
I'd ride around to your house, baby
Get you up to speed
If i was short track racer
I'd be an indian
You could ride me around
And ride me round again
You're gonna need a rider anyhow
Let me be your rider now
You're gonna need a rider anyhow
Let me be your rider now

JETHRO TULL LYRICS

"Too Old To Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young To Die"

The old Rocker wore his hair too long,
wore his trouser cuffs too tight.
Unfashionable to the end --- drank his ale too light.
Death's head belt buckle --- yesterday's dreams ---
the transport caf' prophet of doom.
Ringing no change in his double-sewn seams
in his post-war-babe gloom.

Now he's too old to Rock'n'Roll but he's too young to die.

He once owned a Harley Davidson and a Triumph Bonneville.
Counted his friends in burned-out spark plugs
and prays that he always will.
But he's the last of the blue blood greaser boys
all of his mates are doing time:
married with three kids up by the ring road
sold their souls straight down the line.
And some of them own little sports cars
and meet at the tennis club do's.
For drinks on a Sunday --- work on Monday.
They've thrown away their blue suede shoes.

Now they're too old to Rock'n'Roll and they're too young to die.

So the old Rocker gets out his bike
to make a ton before he takes his leave.
Up on the A1 by Scotch Corner
just like it used to be.
And as he flies --- tears in his eyes ---
his wind-whipped words echo the final take
and he hits the trunk road doing around 120
with no room left to brake.

And he was too old to Rock'n'Roll but he was too young to die.
No, you're never too old to Rock'n'Roll if you're too young to die.

The older riders amongst us are undoubtedly deliberately overlooking "The Leader of the Pack" by the Shangri-Las. In fact, I feel that there might be a few red reps coming this way for mentioning the hideous thing. It's the one that sounds like a Honda 50 being revved at the end of each verse:sick:

"hey, betty? is that jimmy's ring you're wearing?"
"uh huh."
"oh! must be nice riding on that motorcycle after school, huh?"
"uh huh."
"is he picking you up after school today?"
"unh uh!"
"well, where'd ya meet him?"

I met him at the candy store.
He turned around and smiled at me.
Ya get the picture? (yes, we see)
That's when i fell for the leader of the pack.

My folks were always puttin' him down.
Down! down!
They said he came from the wrong side of town.
They told me that he was bad,
But i knew that he was sad.
And thats why i fell for the leader of the pack.

One day my dad said, "find someone new."
New! new!
I had to tell my jimmy that,
Whoa, we were through.
He stood up and then he asked me why.
But all i could do was cry.
I'm sorry i hurt you,
The leader of the pack.

He sort of smiled and he kissed me goodbye.
The tears were beginning to show.
And as he rode away from me
On that rainy, rainy night,
I begged him to go slow.
But whether he heard me
I'll never, never, never, never know!
Look out now, now, look out!
Whoa oh no no no! whoa no no no! no! no!

I felt so helpless! what could i do-wo-wo-wo-wo?
The only, only love that we had was through.
At school they all stop and stare.
I can't hide the tears.
I just don't care!
I will never forget you,
The leader of the pack!
Whoa-oo-woh! gone gone gone!
Gone gone gone!
The leader of the pack is,
Now he's gone!
The leader of the pack is,
Now he's gone!
The leader of the pack is, whoa gone!
Gone gone gone!
Gone gone gone!
Gone gone gone!

Yeah. I remember watching something that explained the song. Steinman wanted to write something to rival those car wreck songs of the late 50s and 60s. "Leader of the pack', 'Tell Laura I love Her', 'Teen Angel' etc.

Correct.

"On a long and lonesome highway, east of omaha.
You can listen to the engine moaning out its one lone song
You can think about woman, or the girl you knew the night before,
But your thoughts will soon be wandering, the way they always do.
When your riding sixteen hours and theres nothing much to do
And you dont feel much like riding, you just wish the trip was through.
Say, here I am, on the road again. there I am, up on the stage.
Here I go, playing star again.
There I go, turn the page."

I know some people like to take life easy,
That's not my style.
I'm not the type to let this life tease me,
I'm gonna make it wild.

I just wanna ride,
Get on my bike and ride.

Some people think you've got to like your life one way,
I disagree.
I'm not gonna pay attention to them anyway,
It's got nothing, nothing to do with me.

Life is so short, we've got
No time to waste at all.

I just wanna ride,
Get on my bike and ride.
I just wanna ride,
Get on my bike and ride.

I see the road, as it opens up before me,
I feel the heat.
I'm gonna go where I want, when I want to.
I've got to be free.

I just wanna ride,
Get on my bike and ride.
I just wanna ride,
Get on my bike and ride.

Feels so right...
Feels so right...

New Sensations, Lou Reed

I took my GPZ out for a ride
The engine felt good between my thighs
The air felt cool, its was 40 degrees outside

I rode to Pennsylvania near the Delaware gap
Sometimes I got lost and had to check the map
I stopped at a roadside diner for a burger and a coke

There were some country folk and some hunters inside
Somebody got themselves married and somebody died
I went to the juke box and played a hillbilly song

They was arguing about football as I waved and went outside
And I headed for the mountains feeling warm inside
I love that GPZ so much, you know that I could kiss her

Only got one Lou Reed Album. Berlin. Sad sad shit. Like most of his music but Berlin..............

The Last Note of Freedom - David Coverdale

Here I am, burnin' man,
Singing the song of my open soul
Will time pass me?
all my dreams are heaven known

I don't wanna be cheated,
I can't go on, in a world where love is
beaten

Rise up burnin' man,
seize the wild take command.
Days of thunder see me shine,
All my dreams turn out fine

I know the suffering will end, my friend,
When the last note of freedom is rung throughout the land
I know the hateful will burn,
When the last note of freedom is heard throughout the land

I know the fear of dying,
Heard it from a meltdown blast
I know that lord have mercy,
It soon will pass
I know it
I don't wanna be cheated,
I can't go on, in a world where love is
beaten,
Where love is defeated

I know the suffering will end, my friend,
When the last note of freedom is rung throughout the land
I know the hateful will burn,
When the last note of freedom is heard throughout the land

I know the fear of dying,
Heard from a meltdown blast
I know that lord have mercy,
It soon will pass

We need love
You gotta want it so bad
We need it now,
So run to it fast

I know it,
And the world will be cheated
I can't go on, in a world where love is
defeated
I know it
I don't wanna be cheated,
I can't go on, in a world where love is
defeated

Where love is defeated
Can't go on, in a world where love's
defeated
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
