Paeroa Battle of the Streets
18th February 2007
17 races of motorcycling mayhem! The Battle of the Streets is an institution in Paeroa.
Check out New Zealand's top riders as they tear up the street circuit set through central Paeroa.
Yay!
I've entered, and I'm looking forward to it!
Have entered in F2 on the mighty CBR600rr #55.
Haven't done it on a 600 before, so am a little nervous about it, but either way, I'm going to have some fun!
I'm just hoping I have my forks done before then!
If not, its going to make life very interesting :innocent:
Anyone else going? Register your attendance here. (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1057&day=2007-2-18)<br /><br />

This press release came through from the Jared Love camp... thought you guys might find it interesting:
Next Sunday, the best of the best of NZ Motorcycle racing will fight it out for the 2nd and final round of the Battle of the Streets. This is always a popular day out with over 15 thousand attending each year.
Jared is feeling confident and determined he can win the last round of the streets for the season. The Ducati is looking good with new graphics and a new sponsor in Power Horse Energy Drink joining the team.
Paeroa is Jared's favourite event and a track he likes to beat after suffering life threatening injuries racing here a few years ago. His determination and fight to survive have carried on in his racing and he is guaranteed to be pushing it to the limit for this years racing.
So far this season the bike and Jared have suceeded many times, breaking a number of lap records in both NZ and Australia and we would like to finish up the season the way it started, with a win.
We hope you can all make it to Paeroa next Sunday and the team look forward to seeing you all there.

There are a few good places to watch. The Hairpin has some cool backing in points, the main straight is fast as hell, the back straight is bumpy as shit, so the front wheels are in the air most on the time.
If your in the middle of the track, you can walk to the start/finish straight and the Back straight without a problem. It will take a bit to walk around the outside of the track, but there are some good viewing points all around it.
Dont think it matters where you go. Its great viewing everywhere:Punk:

To be honest, I find that the fact that they charge a fee to watch the racing a bit off considering they close and use public roads and facilities. Maybe charge a fee for some prime viewing, but they should have a whole lot free for the public.

Stroudy was gunning it down that main straight. ( my fav bit ) :first:

Overall excellent!
Kyle
18th February 2007, 16:28
Ok so that was cool. It wasnt crashs that i wanted, it was thrills, close calls and stuff, And there sure was alot of those. high lights for me was seeing two guys collide coming out of the hairpin in practice session. They didnt crash or even slow down, but one of them lost something off his bike.
Then later i seen one of the classics blow up right in front of me, droped its oil all over the place.
The racing was exciting. Tight and lumpy ment the f1 f2 and motards were on one wheel often, And i suspect a little bit of showing off, because that was one big crowd watching.
But what most impressed me was when i walked over the hill and stumbled upon the bike park. Id guess at least 10,000 bikes, maybe more. They were lined up three or more rows deep for the entire length of the course. Problery one of every model, every different color and condition. Throw in a splash of customs and some real old timers. It looked more like a massive bike show than a carpark.
Then there was the free bike mag BRM given to me. The food places every ten paces, the loverly lady selling ice cold beer right out the doorway of one of the bars. Just when i was about to pass out from heat exhaustion too, life saving coolness.
Oh and the holden commodore monster truck was neat.
Well organized and executed id say, think i`ll have to become a regular. And the ride there and home wasnt half bad either.
Kyle
18th February 2007, 16:40
And the guy on the motard, that was doing huge rolling stoppies, should be given a crowd pleasing trophy too. He problery didnt notice the mexican wave of grins, cheers and 'nice stoppie' following him along.

Was my first street race since I was like 6. AWESOME day, perfect weather, loads of people, insane bike riders. Truely awesome. Can't wait till next year!
That bike park.... Never have I seen so many bikes. I don't think I have seen that many bikes collectivly in my entire life EVER. I think I had one of the only Hyobags there. I saw only one other :(
I have also come to the conclusion that sidecar racers are missing the part of their brain which controls fear of death. I almost died from just watching them :shit:
What speed would those big bikes be doing do the straight? I have never seen anything like it. They were going past so quick! Didn't have to wait long at all and they were coming past again!
Aweosme awesome awesome!

well my first visit to the hack saw went alright
i had not been to the pearoa street race for about 10 years, the last time i went i was working for bel-ray, and they were the major sponsors,
the learners practise and our motard practise went well, i had scored alright at wanganui so i was off grid 8 for race 1, i was 12 fastest in qualifing but spent most of the time in traffic after overshooting turn 1 early on,
race one and i got a good jump, i was 6th though turn 2 with Mitch Rowe ahead, a couple of the bigger bikes got me on the main straight, i lost a few places in the post office left hander after running very ride and getting 2 close to the bails, i got really wide off the kink on the back straight before the haripin, i was in the gutter and clipping the wool sacks with my footpeg, i thought i had lost it but manages to get it back on the track, Scotty Moir got next to me coming on to the front straight after this, he managed to outbrake me into turn one, i still could not get mitch in front so ended up 10th in this race, not to bad, but i new i could do better,
race 2 was the last race of the day, i got a good jump off grid 10 but Nick Payne on the black husqy got a shokking jump right in front of me, i ended up in a race long battle with Mitch Rowe and Squid on another RMZ450, Squid got me at one stage but i got him back into turn one, taking the white flag right next to mitch i though i could get him, however he was a bit later on the brakes into turn one and i never got close enough in the haripuin to have another run at him,, Briggs crashed out of so i think i got 9th in this race, i would have liked ot be a couple of places hire in each race, it showed that i had not raced on tarmac since wanganui and i still lack corner speed, need to get to some more race days
It was a long day for two races, i think i might need to get 2 bikes and do 2 classes next year, great day, big crowd in,
Auckland club and pearoa trust did a good job, still i can not get over the messing around between races in road racing, i am used to mx that is a bit more quick fire, maybe i need to turn the a d d down a bit and relax,
i had a digital video camera on board, which worked fine on the the dummy grid but i kept going blank as soon as i got going on the track, so no video's sorry,

And how will you fund the Tv and prize money and all the other associated costs?, or should someone else wear all that just so you can get in for free?
I didn't realise that they gave a lot of the proceeds tohe voluntary organisations that help on the day. Big ups for that.
At $20 an adult, and $10 a kid plus gas money and food (if bought) make for a quite expensive day out for a large family. With 15,000 people, surely they could have enough revenue with $10 adults and $5 kids with a $30/$40 family pass? (not that I have a family, but just mindfull of these things!)
However, as I said, bigups that they put the extra dosh back into the local community, and that they actually plan these sorts of things, I mean look at how Auckland went on the V8 street racing, it would be brilliant if we could organise a similar sort of event...we have plenty of possible venues...

I have heaps of picks, most aren't all that good but there are a few that are OK... The people who were racing could they please PM me if they want copies?
Here are a few any way  I've lowered the pixels in it so they open easier, they might not be as clear though
The second to last one is what I came home to (taken at the lookout)... I love this place

That was some good fun today... Wheely bars everywhere... hard to keep the front down out of the hairpin onto the main straight, It ain't just showing off!!
220 down the back straight, and 245 was the best I saw on the front straight, hard to look at the speedo though, concentrating on avoiding crashes everywhere!!
Hard luck award goes to (in my books) Jason Hulme - Just got his bike back together after dropping a valve at Levels, and then under a red flag a certain rider ran up his arse, sending him flying, and putting the bike out of commission.
And Jared Love, the brother broke his leg hard out. Will go say hello to him tomorrow, and see how he is getting along.
Was an OK day for me, not spectacular, in terms of results, but not bad. Next year should be better, as it takes a while for me to cement circuits into my head. Would be real nice next year if no one drops oil in critical drop in points!!! might have broken into the 50s if not for that!! Next year shall be 47s at worst. Ended up with 51s, and a tenth. Had fun, and learnt lots though, starting to watch racing for the nuances of body and bike positioning, instead of just the crashes ;)
Big ups to Stroudy, for helping Paul and I out with the bike, what a legend!
My utmost thanks go to Graham Cole, pitted for me, and was right there with good advice for this slow learner!

What was the fastest 600 of the day Jonno? Lap times?
When I was racing in 04, it was Sheriffs doing 46 and that was pretty insane!

Andrew clocked a 45.2, just checking to see if they are up on mylaps yet... Bloody fast out there!!
Sorry to all those I missed, I was lucky to be parked right on the pit lane, so never missed a race, and could keep the tyre warmers on till the last few seconds!

Anyone know who the chap was with the helmet cam? Man I want to see that vid lol. I cant even remember the colour of the bike. Think it may have been yellow... I have the most shocking memory ever. Next time I will have a camera to remember for me!

That was a bit worrying, the 'certain rider' was heading straight at me, but managed to miss the barriers. Jason's bike hit the barriers on the other side, which then hit two gate marshalls and sent them flying.
Perhaps there needs to be flag recognition lessons.

To all you bistards that did runners from the cops on the the way to Paeroa, thanks a bloody lot. Pulled over by a nice police officer as I thought hey you've got your lights on & I'm 500m's fm. Paeroa, it's a nice day and I wasn't speeding exccesively so i'll pull of the main drag and go to park on this side road, well bugger me that was not good as he thought I was going to do a runner ( would I have been braking and indicating if I was going to run ) so does the old rolling block & forces me off the road (nearly stopped I might add). Poor bugger was that wound up so I asked him to settle down please, he explained that there was heaps of bikes that had done runners this morning hence the rolling block, he did state"hey we cannot use spikes on you guys" I said "thank fuck for that officer Ted".Anyway you always take your medicine in these instances and wished the officer a nice day. Once he'd settled down he wasn't to bad a bloke that was just doing his job. His aggressive tactics did freak me out initally but hey they deal with alot of arseholes.

Nah, took SH2 all the way back to Auckland and didn't see one cop. Maybe they concentrated on your lot and left us Orks to have some fun:whistle:

I caged it back to Auckland and saw 1 cop outside Paeroa and that was it. Plenty of bikers prepared to give us a bad name though. Not so much speeding but stuff like overtaking into blind corners, cutting up cars and so on. Makes it tough for the rest of us, eh?
A great day out. Took my son, his mate and my Dad to watch. Great racing. Thanks to everyone who gives up their time and money top make it happen. I'm definitely riding next year.

Well Trish, "Roxanne" and I have just got back from Paeroa. We all pretty naffed. Trish was Flag Marshalling with me at "Point 4" (half way along Princess St, up pass the Post Office).
Main problem was fu*ktards crossing the "Track" while it was closed for racing. Don't they get it? One Dead Fu*ktard would be all OSH needs to close this race permanently.
Poor old "Point 5" (first part of the Suzuki "S" Bend, Corner of Princess St and Wharf St.) started their day putting lime down on Hydraulic fluid. Some twit thought it might be cool to cut the media cherry picker's hose overnight. Hope they are caught and charged with attempted man slaughter. Would have contributed to Chris Seaton "talking to the hay bails" there during Formula Paeroa.
One of the Sidecars must have sprung a leak as all the "Ponits" had a trail of oil around the whole track to lime after one of their races.
"Point Nine" had the hardest day, but I will post about that later (got ta get some work done).

well my first visit to the hack saw went alright
It was a long day for two races, i think i might need to get 2 bikes and do 2 classes next year, great day, big crowd in,
Fantastic you had agood day, I love watching the motards race!
Auckland club and pearoa trust did a good job, still i can not get over the messing around between races in road racing, i am used to mx that is a bit more quick fire, maybe i need to turn the a d d down a bit and relax,
MX is so different from the street racing...street racing come with its own special features, thats what makes it so wonderful
i had a digital video camera on board, which worked fine on the the dummy grid but i kept going blank as soon as i got going on the track, so no video's sorry,
Murphy is such a prick sometimes!
Glad that you had a good day, seems there were a few of us that did :Punk:

What did you do to the tyres? Now it looks superimposed. Think you farked something up there, does not look right.
If you pay me for the work, I'll do a pro job. Just takes hours (recreating pixels to generate shadows and alter lighting from all angles just to make it seem natural for the viewer). It's not worth it just for the hell of it.

I don't get it. $20 adult & whatever for kids. Starts around 8am & finishes after 5. Full on entertainment for the whole time (excepting the short breaks so people can cross the track).
How much for movies? Which happen to last, at most, 2-3 hours (most shorter than that).
If you've got a large family, that's your problem & apart from the beach, nothing's going to be cheap or free.
The amount of organisation that goes on behind the scenes is impressive - have a read of the FREE programme that you got, which explains about what the locals do on race day. St Johns is probably volunteers, but St Johns proper do charge for their staff/volunteers.
Oh, FREE parking. That's becoming an oddity in itself.
Yeah, it cost us $40 in entry fees, plus food & drinks & petrol to get there, but it was fun.
As for cops, I think I might have seen one, but don't quote me. Didn't do any runners (pretty impossible anyway).
Scott, your comment about 2 races - that I do understand. Almost needed to be 2 days with twice as many races for you guys - hell of a cost to get there & set up with so little time on the bike.
First time I'd been there (been meaning to get there for years, but never seemed to make it). The one thing about the day that I thought sucked was the ride down from Auckland - what a bore. Teleporting would definitely be better for places like that. Sorry, I hate straight boring roads - yeah, we could've gone another way, but I knew I'd be lucky to even find Paeroa. Will be back at some stage, but now at least I've been to a street race. Next on the list is a rally, then longtrack, then .....

Sigh. Xtrop complaining. At least you folk got to go, I was just too sick to make it down, and even if I had I'd never have made it home again.
Which was really disappointing. So you folk that were able to get there, be grateful. And stop whinging. Or alternatively, maybe post what an utter boring miserable waste of a day it was and then I won't feel so pissed off about missing it.

OK back ta poor old "Point 9". "Point 9" was the Pirelli Hairpin. Yep, the most likely ta see the off, but on top of that it is right next ta the Paeroa Hotel. Yep you guessed it, pissed fu8ktards. Just what every Marshall needs ta be dealing with while looking out for the racers. At one stage some pissed prats had pinched the Marshalls' fire extinguishers and was firing them off. That nearly had the race stopped. The Police were called for but were slow ta get there (probably not their fault as they were probably dealing with trouble elsewhere).
But yer in saying all that Trish and I still had an awesome day. Thanks to the KB'ers that stopped ta say "hi". Great ta see ya there. Thanks to the racers for putting on a good show for us:Punk: .

Will have ta ask a racer how his bike ended up nick named "Priscilla" by the Marshals:dodge:
Got an awesome view of the bikes coming out of the "Westpac Corner" ("Point 3", Corner of Arney St and Princess St) has they hit the dip. Surprised no-one came off there, as a few had a fair shake on as they hit it. One of the "Old School" dirt track sidecars had a good old tank-slapper going on there. They where getting a good three wheel drift going on as they exited that corner too. Awesome ta watch.

Police were on the other side of the road outside the Hotel at the time. Dipstick had done a runner well before they got over the road and left his mates to talk to the coppers.

I got RESPECT for these guys! That's tough!
I just stood there :gob: at the sheer speed down the straights! He was faster than all the other Motards by a margin! I'd heard about how quick these bikes are but until you see it for yourself... Noticed the one-armed guy as well, he did well and like OAB I'd hate to give him and armwrestle! Takes real strength to race a bike like that!
Again, what a great day and I'm sure we'll be at the next! Was amazed and real pleased that the Missus loved the day too! Especially the antics of the sidecars! Looks like Darby and Joan got things in common we can enjoy without the kids! (Mind you, the kids may want to come along next time too...Son-in-Law is drooling over our new bike and wants one... )
