I don't know if you know but cordura jackets and trou aren't waterproof of their own accord ie. your wet tail yesterday. What you need is a bottle of waterproofing ie.Nikwax TX.DIRECT spray on and what you do is totally wet your gear outside with a hose is good and spray this all over it and then let air dry,it will prevent a repeat uncomfortable ride home in Sunny Rapa conditions like yesterday.Ask your friendly bike shop dealer.

Yay! Ok I think you welly guys meet somewhere... say rimutex (?) at 10am and make your way over the hill. Me and elle and anyother rapa riders will either meet you at the top of the hill or at rimutex (Think elle wants to ride all the way over the hill).

Of course all this is dependent on weather... so will post by 8am if the ride is cancelled in this thread.

Cheers

If all goes to plan I'll be coming back from Taupo on the 6th.

mmm long weekend  - Napier for a couple of days, through to Taupo, then back to the Rapa.

Would have been nice to go tho. Thoroughly enjoyed the ride with all the welly folks last Wednesday to the Tin Hut. Very impressive looking in rear view mirror to see all the lights.

Where and what is the Rimutex ?

yungatart

Rimutex is the Caltex station on the main road in Upper Hutt, just before the turn off to the Akatarawas - it is on your left as you head north, Alice - you can't miss it

If you think coming here is a good idea then I am happy to have everybody. If the weather is great meeting at the top of the hill then heading down to Featherston and around the Lakes would be an awesome trip. A drink at Lake Ferry and then off to maybe Martinborough or the Gladstone for some kai? The last time at Lake Ferry, the kai wasn't that good really.

Jens is working so it's my stuff you would be forced to eat sorry! I make a great coffee though and can cold up some beers.

Nasty tells me that we're going ... lol

Elle's right, the weather fo the 'rapa is
- Mostly cloudy, late patchy rain, easterly winds. Up towards Waipuk it's rain all day with "some heavy falls possible"
For the Welly side of the hills
- Mainly Fine, southeast breezes
interstingly the Kapiti-Horowhenua forecast is better again
- Mainly fine & warm with high cloud but a few showers possible. Southeast winds.

So, what to do? I was trying to think of the best places over this side that didn't involve SH1 but I'm not that familiar with the world of out-of-the-way roads here yet.

All I can think of is Whitemans Valley (just called the cafe - they're closed on Tuesday) Makara, Ohariu, Shelley Bay then around the south coast, Wainui Coast Road etc etc but none of them really go anywhere and they all involve coming back through town :(

The original plan's looking pretty good, we'll just get damp on the riding bits

Alice

But at the moment we will stick with the orginal ride. Wairarapa riders will most prob meet you all at rimutex at 10am. Ashhurst Boys... as well? Once there we can decide what to do... dont mind getting wet myself, up to the rest of you I guess. Anyway, rain or shine I'll be there. :)

As long as none of the riders don't veer off, we're cool. I had a thought for a variation if the weather is crappy on the rapa side. There's an interesting half hour ride from Te Marua through Mangaroa and Whotemans Valleys and back onto the motorway at silverstream if we need to wait for the weather to clear before we go up 'n' over to the rapa. Those rapa crew (3?) who were going to wait at the top could come down and join us for a little explore.

I don't know if many of the welly riders have done the trip but it's an interesting cruise and a nice diversion

Drum
5th February 2007, 07:45
Thats a great wee ride, especially when the twisties are approached from the Silverstream end (uphill). I wonder if it is suitable for large groups though? It's also quite a short ride.

Lissa
5th February 2007, 08:16
Everyone is meeting at Rimutex at 10am. Weather in the rapa looks cloudy with late rain for Tuesday at the moment.

KoroJ
5th February 2007, 11:40
I could do with a ride. Put my name on the list please.

Lissa
5th February 2007, 12:10
Ok.. so no one gets confused, esp. myself (seeing as this is the first big ride I have ever been on) here is what is happening so far:

Everyone meet at Rimutex at 10am. If the weather is ok in the rapa (which it SHOULD be) we leave approx 10.15am. Such a big group, we should split up into smaller groups. Can someone help with this, and we will need tail-end charlies as well I am assuming.

Ride over the Takas… maybe stop at the top if you want to, then around Lake Ferry, stop for a drink at the Lake Ferry pub… if you wish to have lunch there we can, otherwise onto Martinborough… flying fish or anywhere else if it gets too full.

Then if you guys still want to ride there is always the Gladstone pub for another refreshment.

In case Wairarapa weather is crappy, I will have to rely on someone arranging where we go, as I haven’t got a clue.

Cheers…. Looking forward to it! :scooter:

5th February 2007, 12:30
See you guys at Rimutex.

I dont mind helping with the tail end charlie/ sweeper thing

Manawatu guys - are you coming Via Kapiti? and if so what time?

If the weather is too crappy in the 'Rapa we could do the Paekak Hill to the sunny Kapiti coast (the waterfront pub at Raumati is good) or around the Pauatahanui Inlet to the Sandbar at Mana. Or, if you're really game, there is always the Akatarawa Rd from Upper Hutt to Waikanae.

Knowing the Ashurst Boyz they'll probably be taking the shortest route with the straightest roads and still get there late. PT.

Think they are going via the "Wire Wrapper" wherever that is.

well I beat thr rush and shot over the hill about 8am, did a couple of runs up and down. Hardly any traffic. Then around the Lake under clear skys. Enjoying that beaut early summer morning cool temperature. The North side of the Lake is bliss in the early morning, the smells, the views, the native bush over hanging the road.
As I returned through Feathers the sky was darkening and drizzle started.
At Upper Hutt I stumbled across the KB gathering. About 50 bikes at the Caltex. Merv was fastest draw with the camera as usual.
So I wandered back up the Hill with them but I could see the rain was not just falling in Spain, so I headed home. The traffic was heavy by then as well.
Hope it clears for you peps and you all have a good day now.

Spare me....
anyway, where did you disappear to after the PK hill?

Drum and I headed back over the hill, parting ways back in the Hutt, after which I went for another blast up the Taka's and back. That wasn't enough so another run up PK hill was in order, followed by a paua burger with extra bacon in Plimmerton.

That sort of carry on is the reason why a usually don't get home from TCWNR until after midnight!

I think its called Plimmerton Fisheries or something. Owned and run by Greeks (Greeks make the world's best shark and tatie)... head down Steyne Avenue to the little roundabout, and its right there as you turn left onto Beach Road.

Unfortunately I got beaten up by a 3 year old and can't ride my bike for a week or so... (i.e. fell over while playing 'chase' and sprained my wrist... not one of my best moments!).
