I'm looking for opinions/outlooks from folks from the Great North.

The good, bad or ugly as as far as shifting to Whangarei and the area in general.
I have always found Whangarei and the far north excellent but was only a visitor.

TIA

We've just moved from Whangarei to Tauranga.
Whangarei is a riders dream in some ways. A lack of cops apart from the obvious SH1...twin coast riding is easy done and heaps of fun.
Plenty of work if your have a hands on trade too as the place is still having a housing boom.

Been in Whangarei all my life 'cept for OE. I'm still here tho I do believe NZ is the land of milk and honey. What kind of work do you do and are you looking at buying a house? There is no end of lovely beaches and bush walks etc etc. You need to do a temp stay prob to know for sure. Good luck.

Lived in Dargaville (near Whangarei) for 18 years. Whangarei is kinda similar. I Wouldn't recommend
it if you have preteens or teenagers though. Thats my opinion. I left 17 years ago so things may have changed.

What makes you say that Katwyn? I have been offered a job up there, Im finding it tough to make a choice considering I love where I live and it seems a world away.

Interesting thoughts..........

Kneescraper, I certainly aren't dising the place. In fact quite to the contrary:

I would probably move back now i'm all grown up (i.e., the people are really friendly and laid back, quite a relaxing place really. And only a short distance to the west coast ninety mile beach, the Kai iwi lakes, Opononi and Waipoua Forest) - its where my family roots are etc etc) - so it's always going to be
a special place for me.

But re the teenagers....Hopefully things may have changed.

I found when I was a teenager - there wasn't really a lot to do and jobs were limited - kind of a bit dead end unless you left and went to Uni. A few girls I knew became mums really young There seemed to be a lot of drug use, alcohol and partying going on with my age group. And this opinion seemed to be the general consensus.

But that may have been my perspective at the time.....I could be wrong - this was 17 years ago now. And its prolly like that everywhere!!

p.s They also have a great, very active historical society

have lived up here all my life and it is good in the respect that it takes 10mins to get out of town to some awesome roads, and within 30 mins you could be riding on the oposite coast. but the novelty has worn of for me and will be looking to leave as soon as soon as i get paroled.

cons- shit paying jobs, and too many jaffa's moving up here.

pros- good relaxed lifestyle, and most of your mates will move up here soon.

My family have been living up there since 1828. I lived in Paihia for thirty years with the water just out front. I was the only member of the Ulysess club up there for years. It is a great place to be and ride, we only had about two frosts a year where I lived. But be aware that people are more impotrant than places. I was a locksmith in the Bay of Islands and met many families just after they had moved there, (they wanted their locks changed), many folk moved back to where they came from to where their close friends and relles lived. If you make friends easily the change could be very good, but remember that bad and dangerous road back to Auckland has to be transversed if you want to see your friends and relations

I part-own a house near Dargaville. The in-laws have semi-retired there.

Agree with Katwyn re. it not being much of a place for young 'uns. It's just the hub of a farming/retiree/Maoris-on-the-dole community. You can't really have much of a life up there unless you're on a farm, or are of Independent Means (tm).

But I love it. I head up there for weekends whenever possible. Camping in the dunes and forestry down the Pouto peninsula, the Kai Iwi lakes, the friendly guy who runs the combination gun shop/liquor wholesaler (only in D-ville, eh?) - it's all great.

We pop over to Whangarei to see a movie or eat at Killer Prawn occasionally, but IMHO, the west coast of the upper North Island is truly the Promised Land.

Don't believe anyone who tells you that the dope is cheaper there, though. The local growers have their finger on the market's pulse...

Let's not forget Danger Danger!, the nightlife centre of the universe where at 2am you're bound to meet drunk slappers inside, and a fine example of northlands up and coming boxers outside.

Cons: Too many burglars, lay-a-bouts, dole-bludgers, wannabe hard-men, thieving pricks, wasps, 'skeeters, heavy rain, humidity.

Pros: Good twisty roads and it's not in Auckland.

But then what would I know, only been there once. (it was enough)
