View Full Version : Know a thing or two about Cof?

Our "make it up as we go along" LTSA are being very vague about my situation.
I'm importing new 5th Wheelers from the US. 5th Wheelers are like a caravan but with a trucks trailer and a heavy duty coupling (hitch) for a flat bed truck. The first one I'm bringing in is 32 feet and the shipping weight is 3633 kgs. The carrying capacity is a further 1300 kgs.
Any trailer over 3500kg's needs a CoF. Here's the tricky bit. I can't seem to find a classification for it on LTSA's website. The closest is a semi-trailer which can't have an overhang more than 4 metres from the middle of the axle. In my case the axles are nowhere near the rear of the chassis like a truck trailer. They're just back from the middle.
I know I need to get a hubometer but what else should I be aware of?

Man I wish I knew what you were refering to because it sounds interesting but when ever I have a problem with the LTSA I give 'em a ring...they are very helpful, well in my case!

Have you rung the Auckland office of Land Transport NZ and had a talk to them if you can't make sense of the website?

Yes. When I mentioned I wanted to import a 5th Wheel and that it weighed over 3500kg's, they sounded amazed and asked what the wheel was for. Got put through to several people, got tired of explaining myself and hung up.

Take the language down a notch or two and communicate on their level.
"I want to import a big arsed american caravan that fits to the back of my big arsed american truck and ends up looking a bit like an articulated lorry but with windows and a fitted kitchen. Who knows their shit where this is concerned so I can get all appropriate certificates and drive it on the road?"
Alternatively you could keep bumping this thread until someone that knows their shit reads it.
Or you could ask these guys how they do it:http://www.hodgerv.co.nz/fifthwheels.htm

What's a hobometer?
Is that what trailer park trash use to count the number of trailer parks they live in over a given time?

there's this site called www.ltsa.govt.nz it has links to factsheets, and the relevant legislation. your trailers appear to be light semi trailers (under 20 tonne), and clearly have an overhang limit of 4m from the RA. no amount of talking to idiots at ltsa or wishful thinking is going to change that.
