If the car was designed correctly he wouldn't have even been injured.
Serious record breakers have enclosed cockpits.Hammond was hurt because the roll bar and his head dug into the soil.
Those tyres the car was fitted with aren't rated to 280 mph.
At those speeds the wheels tend to be large diameter to keep bearing speeds down and the tyres are solid rubber because inflated tyres rip apart (surprise surprise).
At higher speeds ( on dry lake beds) they use alloy wheels with no tyres (Thrust SST)
The muppet TV3 news claimed it was a world speed record attempt.

Watched the whole episode of Top Gear here on BBC2 last night. Pretty amazing footage. Jeremy still couldn't resist taking the mickey constantly though. Still, everyone was pretty happy to see him back again. He was bloody lucky to survive after having an accident at that sort of pace. Notice he was wearing an Arai lid? It did the job.

Saw it on the news last night and was amazed he survived. Great advertisement for his helmet after hearing him say the roll cage - and his head - dug into the ground in the end and that's what stopped the thing.

By the look of it there were no major impacts,no high rotational spins, all his helmet did was act as a bulldoser blade

A bulldozer blade at well over 200mph? It'd better be super tough to cope with that sort of punishment and give the wearer enough protection that he actually lived, although it was a near thing! Seeing him upright and smiling again on the TV was sort of surreal, knowing how close he came to death in that crash. Absolutely unbelievable. He's a great guy, I'm so happy for him and his family, as well as Top Gear, that he's been able to fight through it.

Been watching the episode in the background and the opening is damn hilarious when they reintroduce the Hamster, and also a little emotional with his thank you speech. Damn good sport to allow the amount of ribbing thats going on for the whole show too.
Have to rewatch it tonight.

Here's the Stig's intro from the show......damn god reaction from the crowd too :Punk:
"Some say he once threw a microwave at a tramp ...... And that long before anyone else, HE realised that Jade Goody was a racist, pig-faced waste of blood and organs..."

Pretty sure I know exactly who The Stig is. Especially since, several years ago when this particular person filled in for someone in a race, he was introduced as their tame racing driver. Other things fit in nicely to the role as well. It's not Damon Hill, as is popularly opined. This person is not as well known for racing, but is well known nonetheless.
Can anyone guess who? :shifty:
