View Full Version : How many km do you ride in a year?
sinned

I am fascinated by the number of bikes for sale that have really low kilometres for their year. 3000kms or less a year seems to be common going from some adverts on trademe and most of these low km bikes are recent models. I wouldn't want to be too judgemental about what the bikes are; but there appears to be a trend that the more expensive bikes are not being ridden.
I expect to do 15k just going on a mid week ride and a day cruise in the weekend. I don't commute on the bike; it is purely for pleasure.
How much riding do Kiwibikers do?
Summary of Poll 30/01/07 at 9.00am: 5%, 16%, 33%, 19%, 26%
Summary of Poll 31/01/07 at 9.00am: 7%, 21%, 31%, 16%, 26%

I'll probably do around 10,000 on the VTR... On my old girl, one year I did around 40,000 :gob: frack that was a good year... hehehehe did 95% of the sealed open roads in NZ, plus comuting in general

Im not to sure. I did 15000 k's on the KR and I owned that for just around a year. Ive had the FZR for 2 months now and have done 4500 k's on it so far...
There are guy's like Skelstar who do thousands of k's a month.....

I did 1000km's in the first 3 weeks of having my gsx. ( just commuting )

I never can figure the extraordinarily ow milegaes claimed on some bikes.
I do 30000 to 40000 km a year (more toward the lower figure these days, just want of time)
But then, I do use the bike for commuting. It is purely for pleasure.

I've been back into bikes for just under two years now and am just on a total of 33,000kms so am averaging around 16,000-17,000kms per year just for pleasure :)
Yeah, I can't understand these bikes for sale and quite big bikes and recent models like in the last five years with very low k's. Do people buy them to stick in the garage and just look at them??

The old ZXR is now upto 4000k on the speeeeedoooo (thats once around the clock). done over 55k in 2 years just going to work and home in Auckland (with the old ride now and then). Now living in Palmerston be lucky if I'll do 10K this year.. but I live and hope.
Figure If I can get it up to 25k on the speedo might find a sucker to buy a 18yr bike with only low ks for age for lots of cash :nono: ok mabe not... just got a quote for $1400 worth of parts for a WOF,:gob: thats half the worth of the bike.... must be love, would have given it a bullet otherwise :Punk:
There are lots of nice bikes with low k's ... Have fun picking something you like:Punk:

I've had my VTR250 since December 15 2006 and have done 2750km so far. I am not commuting at the moment, all just riding for fun. I guess by the end of the year, if I still have the bike, I will have done way over 20,000km :)

Going by my average since buying my bike new to date is 31.777km a day, so that should mean I might potentially do at least 11598.89km for the year.
And that would mean, using the same average fuel since new, I will consume some 704ltrs of gas.
Ok I have to much time tonight... :whocares:

Done 20,000 ks in the last year. Thats higher than average for me. Im usually somewhere between the 10-12k mark.
But I think the next 12 months may be another higher than usual one. Im off for a quick 5 day 3000 k trip in March:scooter: Ya bloody ho!
Its mainly weekends and fun with very little commuting involved.

From the time I've owned my little ol'Hornet  in August of last year, I've done just over 30,000kms. Yeah, yeah - mad riding and no-life and all that  Just can't help it!
Once that little ol'Hornet fires up, I just gotta ride it...and ride it...and ride it...you all know what it's like! :innocent:
I've been off riding since the beginning of the year (damn holidays...I ride less during them due to family commitments! ) Can't wait to get back to teaching so I can make up those missing 2000km average a week? :whocares:
Plan of Action : Ride 3000km per week from the 7th of Feb! (danger : may like riding the 3000km average so much I will keep doing it :shit:)

I'll do 20-24k a year, and thats limiting myself a fair bit (gas cost alone :shit: )
What really hurts is then selling a bike you have owned for just over a year, and its gone from 52k, to 74k. People judging solely on mileage slaughter the value of the bike, making it farken expensive to upgrade :bye:

I'm a weekend warrior so can't ride as much as I would like but still managed 22,000ks in my first year back in the saddle. Unlike the two gents of similar vintage (the guys not their bikes) to me just down the road who seem to have theirs more for bragging rights than to ride. They're just machines and were designed to be ridden - ride 'em.:scooter: (having said that an MV Tambourini would probably end up on a pedastal in my lounge! )

Not many. I don't get to ride while I'm over here in the UK, and while I was back in NZ last year I only really used it for commuting. And since it's less than 5km to work... I really didn't put many kms on it at all. Working weekends was the main culprit there, I just never got the chance to head out and ride. Hopefully that'll change once I'm back again, get another job that doesn't mean weekend work... and I'll be out a lot more often. It's going to be good.

I usually do around 20000kms a year, but the last couple of years have been a bit busy so I'm under 15000km on average for the last 3 years.
Like Ixion, I enjoy commuting on the bike. Gear on, on bike, empty brain, ride home, sleep soundly because brain is empty.
Arrive at work with empty brain and big grin.

Had "Roxanne" for nearly 3yrs now. Got her @ 30,000Miles (48,280Km's). She is nearly on 80,000Miles (128,747Km's) now. That means I've done 50,000Miles (80,467Km's) on her in 3yrs, so an average of 16,667Miles (26,817Km) per year. In 2yrs I had riden her more that she had done in 14yrs. Love riders that buy bikes for me and don't ride them much:Punk:

My old bike (VT 250) I did about 5000k in 5 years (give or take some k's and years) only because I need the car to cart crap around and I only work 5 mins from home (my car is a '94 and it only has 40,000k on it).
My new bike (had about a week) I've done 350k so far, I've been going the long way to work (when I can), remember I work 5 mins away but been taking a longer route ie over the harbour bridge back down greenhive ...
Later this year I should be finished my rod project, which will really screw me up, bike, car or rod .... hmmm

For some of us riding is a bit of a luxury.
The nature of my work prevents commuting by bike, and the number of hours worked limits riding time. Mr Murphy ensures that the weather is crappy when I have free time. Sometimes the bike sits in the shed for a month without being touched.
I've done 13,000km on the Virago in three years.........:o

Thinking about it rationally I shouldn't spend too much on my next bike - I want something I'll keep for 5 years at least which is gonna be close to 100,000km - Is it normal to have a commuter bike that you ride at weekends too or do most people buy a commuter and a seperate weekender?
I have a 55km daily round trip plus I'll try to squeeze in a few 100km+ trips in the evenings and then go for some serious trips at the weekend.
I think I have embarked on a career as a bike killer. I will destroy each bike I own by the mere weight of kilometres.

last year on the TLS did over 33000km's, a fair few tyre sets.. and a 2 x chain and sprocket set. This year, prolly not as much due to the new addition in the family and me hitching rides to save on costs.
Last year was mainly commute to work, with a few good trips thrown in for good measure.. and some weekend rides sneaked in. Wanting to sneak more weekend rides in.

McJim, it is not uncommon to buy a track bike and a road bike and there are a few people who have a 250 for commuting and a sportsbike for riding - not a silly idea really...
I do 350km a week commuting, a weekend ride, a mid week ride, a couple of tours per year and that's just on the road bike. Well over 20,000km per year.
Dunno how many I'd do on the race bike, but a fair few at the moment.

Well my baby had less than 3,000km on the clock when I brought her and she was 3 years old at the time of purchase in 2000.
Now almost 7 years later she is sitting on 96,500km on her clock.
Yep I have clocked up 93,500kms in that time span.
At first I was only doing 10,000kms per year.
But somehow since joining KB the kms have gotten higher per year.
So I guess she averages out at 13,214km per year, over the past 93,500kms
Not forgetting the time off the bike for different things.
5 weeks - carpel tunnel operation.
8 weeks - hysterectomy.
10 to 12 weeks - after my accident.
Total = 23 weeks off the bike over the almost 7 years.
But if you take it from 0 to 96,500 = 13,785kms per year.

Had my bike since Dec 23 06, done just shy of 5000km. All pleasure riding, I commute to work on my peddley.
Last evening in the Bay was stinking hot so I rode out to Whaipatiki Beach after work and went for a swim. The beach is a lovely sheltered Bay with a small camping ground that the local farmer has set up on his farm. Its very nicely done, the campsites and cabins are set up on terraces and look out to sea. The sea was beautiful and warm, with a bit of a swell running for the surfies.
Oops got a bit sidetracked, I'm just full of the joys of the summer in the Bay. Love those warm evenings.

So far the Virago is averaging just over 52mpg.

Just done a quick tally up.. have done approx 12,500 ks in past year, & that was in 9 trips! 8000k of those in past 6 months. 3000 was in 1 trip, of 8 days riding.
Am a solo parent with 4 & 11 yr old boys, so my cage is my main form of transport. My bike is purely my passion, & my sanity saver!!! :Punk:
Couple of years ago.. did 804ks in one day.. just to go for a ride!!! Went from Motueka, Murch, Westport, Greymouth, Kumara, Arthurs Pass to the Viaduct, back to Jacksons Pub, into Lake Brunner to Nelson creek, up to Reefton, Inangahua, Murch & home to Motueka. This year is appearing to turn into a sub 1000km year, and definitely will be a sub 2000km year.

14000 since january last year... Numerous trips out to Akaroa when i am in chch.
Been in welly since november so been doing the trip up the rumitaka's. Did the round trip twice this weekend...

I chose the wrong box on the poll (poor math skills) - I've had my bike since May 06 and have now done over 6600 kms. Bit of a slow start on it (first bike an all) but now the kms are piling on:
Bought 13 May 06 - first service 2 August 06: odo = 1200kms
2 August - second service 8 December 06: odo = 4850 kms
second service to 2 Feb 07: odo = 6600 ish kms!
I commute almost every day - 50kms round trip. Plus I've been going out for a ride a lunchtimes recently. I filled up on Tuesday lunchtime and have done about 200kms since then.
