View Full Version : North Island: Quasi gear and assorted amusements show
Colapop
30th January 2007, 20:24
The Quasi Gear and Assorted Amusements Show. March 10 at Absolute Steak Waikane (the Waikanae pub). Tickets $5 (covers food), all tickets go into a draw for prizes (Quasi to provide). Alcohol is supplied on site.
ABOSULTELY NO DRINKING AND RIDING.
There's plenty of accomodation in and around Waikanae and Paraparaumu so it would be great to see people from further afield too - Tauranga, New Plymouth, Taupo, even Auckland (Hence the North Island tag). I am giving up going on the ride to ensure I have my vehicle (cage) available to transport people around and careful capable riders have been arranged to drop off bikes to your accommodation (If you're not staying too far away).
There will be a full range of QUASiMOTO (http://www.quasimoto.co.nz/) gear available or available to be ordered. Wellington Motorcycles (http://www.motorcycle.co.nz/) may also be providing helmets and demo bikes (TBC).
There will be a ride beforehand finishing at Q.G.A.A.S. at approximately 4pm. (TBC). Please register here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1141&day=2007-3-10) if you will be attending so I can organise numbers with the venue.

Seeing as we're almost there.....I'm looking for some feedback re the bikes we bring out.
At this stage, I'm thinking Triumph 675 Daytona, Suzuki SV 1000 or 650?, Buell XB12SS, and Harley-Davidson VRSCR (Street-Rod). No smart comments about the VRSCR please......just because the last two times I've ridden it I've amassed $810.00 worth of speeding fines and 90 demerit points, let alone the 28 day licence suspension....doesn't mean it's no good!

Love the look of the 675 and have always wanted to try one.
Cousin in law down south has a SV1000, he keeps saying we should have this instead of the Hornet. I would love to put that to the test.
Buell XB12SS, a curious looking bike that I am curious about.

We've decided to bring the 675, SV1000S, SV650S and the Buell XB12ss
WhycanI only see one Japanese bike. And all these bikes are only running on 2 or 3 cylinders.
That's because we wanted to bring out one of each from the four brands we sell. BUT, we've decided against bringing the VRSCR as we doubt there's too many KBers that'd want to own one. That, and the last two times I've ridden it up that way it's cost me $810.00, ninety demerit points and a 28 day licence suspension. I think it's cursed!
Both the SV1000 & 650 are on special at the mo, so we figure it makes sense to bring them both.
Looking forward to having a ride on the 675 if I'm allowed.

Col - Quasi - Pete and the guys from WGN M/C's - top effort lads and bloody well done! Perfect weather, nice venue and I think those that wanted filled their boots. Good effort EVERYONE and obviously top blokes to deal with people so if you need a new bike OR good gears - (or a cuddle) you know who to go see.
Farkin funny listening to the comments from people coming back from test rides but more of that later...
ONE ITEM OF BUSINESS
A ladies diamond ring was found in the pub loo's so if you lost one or are feelin' lucky - contact the venue.
Now - I promised an extended road testing report on the buell.... But i can't, that bastard Pete took back my urban terror machine because it had to go on a hoggly doggly thingy on sunday.. What?? Then he gave me the choice of a new SV1000 or a 675 Daytona.... I couldn't decide so I let Vicki pick (after I told her the Daytona the Daytona) Top bloke that Pete - always said so, salt of the earth, decent chap and all that
So now - not only is the Buell so mental it drove my pillion crazy - it's driven Pete insane as well - he lent an idiot like me a Triumph 675? Cor.... I've already scared myself witless....
and thats just lookin at it....

What a great day.
Rode the long way round to Palmy in the morning.
Got to the event just as quasi was setting up so had a good chat and perused the goods before the masses arrived, picked up a back protector.
Then the bikes arrived, this is what I was looking forward to
Bikes in order of riding:
Daytona 675
First impression; very aggressive body position. My feet felt really high and I was pretty hunched over with a lot of weight on my wrists.
The ride; very very smooth engine that loved to be revved. But I had this almost bored feeling riding it, a bit strange.
Overall; nice bike that looks hot!! Not one for commuting and probably needs to be given a bit more stick.
Suzuki SV650
First impression; a more familiar riding position to the hornet, pretty comfy.
The ride; felt like I was hardly moving but when I look at the speedo I was on 110. This bike was so quiet I struggled to get a sense of the speed I was doing. Did corners well and showed me the difference a v twin engine can make, especially the engine braking.
Overall; not bad, not a bike I would buy.
Suzuki SV1000
First impression; the sound, oh the sound. This bike had Youshi (I think thats what they were) pipes and it sounded fantastic. I could have sat there revving it all day.
The ride; Still can't get over the sound while riding. I was changing gears just to hear it sing. Got a good sense of the speed on this bike but found it heavier through the corners than the 650 (funny that). Got to the turn around point and sat there revving the bike, that sound :Punk:
Overall; This is a nice bike. Tons of power and a great engine. Have I mentioned the sound?
Buell XB12ss
First impression; this bike is weird (Mrs KD calls it the Massey Ferguson tractor)
The ride; shake shake shake, shake rattle and roll. This bike is literally alive. Once moving it really is nice and it has a super soft comfortable seat. I didn't feel confident on it round corners however, especially as I could sense the amount of power it had waiting to unleash.
This bike gave me my only fright of the day. I went to pass a car (we were both doing well under 100k) and I was wondering why I was not really accelerating. A glance at the rev counter showed I was on the 6,500 limit so I changed up a gear. Now on the hornet doing this I go up a gear and flick the gas back on again, no worries. I did this on the Buell and wow shit, I almost went off the back. This bike has so much torque its not funny.
Overall; As I was riding back I thought if there was one word to describe this bike it would be Chaotic.
That was the Wellington motorcycles bikes done and I was a happy camper, still comfortable with the bike I have. But then I had a chat to LBTW and he kindly agreed to let me take his bike for a spin.
Suzuki GSXR750
First impression; The bike seat height is pretty low and the body position is far less aggressive than the 675.
The ride; Like the 675 the engine is smooth and likes to be revved. Then I got to the corners. Oh my god, have I been converted? Is it possible I like Suzuki's? This bike felt perfect to me. Smooth engine and gearbox along with great body position made the corners come alive. 'Is this what I have been missing?' I was thinking to myself. Got to the turn around point and had the big grin going. Off we went back to the function and with the only bad bit being this ride had ended. That bike is a really great ride.
Overall; I had so much fun in that 10 minute ride, that it is making me think about trading the trusty Hornet
So a huge thanks to Quasi, Col and CFWB :niceone: What a fantastic day and I hope it happens again.
I would say thanks to LBTW too, but because of him I am probably going to have to spend some money :weep: But I still love my Hornet.

Hysterical. I was expecting it to be significantly more twitchy than it was, but it actually needed a fair quantity of enthusiasm to get it round corners. Very comfortable, best seat ever with a nice lip to catch you as you start to fall off the back. But try as I might I can't like the engine. The rev limiter kicks in hard - like "go over the handlebars" hard - and low. True it has plenty of torque, but it's the only bike I've ever ridden where you need to change _up_ to overtake, or you'll hit the limiter at an inappropriate moment. It seemed to splutter at low torque too. Build quality was excellent. I did enjoy riding it.
**Daytona 675
Awesome if you're a lanky git. Which I am. The bike feels like it's hewn from a single block of aluminium. Engine is smooth beyond belief and despite being "only" a triple has a healthy redline and spins up quickly. Again appeared to take some effort to get into corners, but very stable once it's there and inspired confidence. Engine has plenty of torque down low and a just amazing "fuck off into the distance" top end ... a deafening wail while being launched down the road. Much like I imagine being fired out of a rail gun would be like. Would be interesting to try and commute - hard work to U turn with 'wrists crunching into the tank' - although fuelling, clutch and gearbox were just wonderful. By far the best ride of the day. By far.
**SV1000
Rode after some goading and the polar opposite to 675. Felt like it was made from eight badly fitted pieces of plastic which gave the impression they were going to fly off under acceleration. Handling and suspension were better than I thought they would be and it didn't do things like stand up under braking. Which is nice because it gives you plenty of opportunities to get on the brakes. Definitely fast but acceleration is spoiled by the sound of bits of plastic vibrating. Mostly comfortable although the tank had some nasty square edges in some bad places. The fairing actually worked. I found it quite boring, to be honest, but seemed to be alone in this.
All in all I think that I like bikes to feel like beautifully made marvels of engineering and that the whole "BLAAAAARPPPP!" thing is lost on me. My growing Triumph fanboyness could be starting to get out of control, although I suspect I might like 636's and perhaps even CBR600RR's.
Again, an awesome afternoon. Thanks guys.

A huge thanks to all who showed up and enjoyed themselves - I know I did!
Pete and your team - awesome. The line for rides was only long coz you brought out some pearlers! The highlight for me was seeing Str8 J riding the SV1000. Watching her come round the corner and think for a split second about coming in, then nailing it and screaming off down the road... And Alex after he got back (pillioned) - A happy kid he was!
Quasi - once again the quality of your gear and prices blows my mind. I still think I should've got those steel glove beasties! Very "I'm going to hurt you now" type gloves... Good for accident scenes...
Sparky B, John, Aaron and ... I forgot (the other one) These guys were all starting school after I'd joined the Army but they still showed us a fun night (sorry about the garden, the seat, and waking y'all up this am... ok I'm not sorry about waking you up.) Alex is only young but he's easy to hassle....
And Martin... top effort not many are even allowed to lift me - or can!
So, yeah, thanks all. Next one will probably be Septemberish or summat... Quasi is back and forward from here to there quite often so just PM or email him through www.QUASiMOTO.co.nz for anything you want.

Just don't buy a Honda, and you'll be welcome in these hallowed halls.
True that - I wouldn't want to make y'all struggle to keep up now, would I?
No Honda eh? Somehow Yamaha Fireblade and Suzuki CBR1000RR just doesn't sound quite right...

Thanks guys for organising the show & Pete & WMCC for supplying bikes to ride.
Had long been interested in the 675 more as a comparo to the ZX636, hate to tell you this Pete but will not be trading the 636 on one. 675 had me a little disappointed, hard seat, good brakes, good mid range, flat top end power And too top it all off it wasnt GREEN.
Didnt ride the others as neither of the SV's interest me & already ridden a Buell.
The gear was excellent value for money.

Thank Christ for that! I've found that Kawasaki owners really freak when you tell them what their trade is actually worth!
But seriously Doug....all good. I'm glad you had a ride on the 675. Even if it's not you, it reinforces to you that you've got the right bike. Nothing wrong with that as far as I'm concerned.
Correct about the gear. I looked over it good and proper. I reckon it'd stand up to my level of abuse.....it looks good too, and the prices were bloody unreal.
Going back to the 'green thing'....you're a freak. So is your wife!:sunny:

Thanks guys for organising the show & Pete & WMCC for supplying bikes to ride..
Thanks for suppling a bike for me to ride today Pete.... Vicki and i spent a day getting our head around the Triumph! A better report will follow...
675 had me a little disappointed, hard seat, good brakes, good mid range, flat top end power And too top it all off it wasnt GREEN.
Well - no - it's not green....
The seat? I found it fantastic after (cough cough mumble km today - not an ache) Vicki on the other hand thinks the designers at triumph are pricks and has issued a contract on them....
The brakes - um dunno - gave up using them after Vicki sat on my shoulders one too many times. Verdict - better than the Moto Guzzi
Power? - check - ample - more than enough......
More later but above all - EVERY time we stopped, someone appeared and told us it was the most beautiful bike they had seen. Next time I will take your business card Pete 'cos you should have a few test rides coming up. It is a stunning looking bike and thats bankable...
Cheers

all i have to say is wtf happened to the garden at the after party, looked like a bulldozer had attacked the garden or maybe just some fat guys had rolled around in the bushes looking for some garden produce. and those deck chairs have weight limits too. also its off to AA for a few people 3ltrs of burboun was consumed (none by me) between 5 or so culprits. and some roller hockey player hellicoptered everywhere!

Actually, I'm worried about the dog .... nobody's mentioned the dog. It was slinking *away* from Colapop even before the bourbon was consumed!

Do it KD, do it!
Nah...Don't do it, Nige. Just think, you'll end up with a sprotbike that accelerates like a ballistic missile, goes blisteringly quick, handles like a dream, and looks ...well just like every other sportsbike...
Stay individual mate, the whole world and its dog rides a sportsbike and yours will get lost in the same fog. If you feel the need for another bike get something you can put your own stamp on, personalise, and bling to death!

I know what you are saying. I have already done the bling research and there is not that much that can be done to one of these bikes to make it individual.
But I have some ideas.....

Was an awesome day, I had a blast. I took the SV650 and 1000 out for a blat. Didnt really wanna bring the 1000 back, what a sweet bike. Think I might have to get one.
Oh yeah the after party was fun. Dont know if poor ol Alex will be drinking again in a hurry. The ride back home to Wgtn was bitch yesterday and to top things off I got my first bloody speeding ticket going over Piecock. Think I might frame it.

playing devil's advocate, I wonder if the SV650S would have had a better reception if it had loud cans on it too?
Having said that, considering the price points of the two bikes I would see more merit in getting people very excited about the bigger bike

It really had nothing to do with the sound of the bike I just enjoyed the way the 1000 went more so than the 650. It also may have just been that I actually had enough guts to get on it too... At least I felt cool for about half an hour!

Fair comment. Still reckon that the sound has a lot to do with alot of what some people were saying. I know my bike took on a completely different personality when I liberated the sound from its anaemic sounding cans.
