Line up folks! These two fine mainlanders require an escort to Foxton from Wellington and I'll be blowed if I'll let them take the long, straight, busy route.
Check the calendar event for details and let us know how many to expect.
AJ will pop in here and tell you what to bring.

As I mentioned in the other threads - it's the Martinborough Fair this weekend so adjust your plans to avoid it..
James Deuce
1st February 2007, 08:00
We'll be going a route that will have minimal interference from Fair goers. The only thing that may be mildly busy will be the hill, but that will probably only be at normal weekend levels on the northbound route, given that we'll be going over at 2:30 in the afternoon. I don't see much issue, and we're leaving SH2 before we hit Carterton. I wasn't planning on going anywhere near Martinborough.

Ah the innocence of youth....
Vicki and 'The Ladies' attend said fair religiously and usually stay over 2 nights in quaint lodgings which they then proceed to line with vast (and I mean VAST) quantities of empty wine bottles of the expensive type (you know - ones with complicated descriptions of the contents and long words in dead languages).... After two days of this behaviour, coupled with a loooong day in the sun picking over cheesy baubles and other assorted munt that even a P deranged Bower Bird would reject as too gawdy and unsuitable for any dwelling other than Ozzie Osbounres dog kennels they generally weave their way home in overloaded people movers and large 4WD's on the sunday after draining the entire wairarapa dry of coffee and cake.
Normally acceptable drivers, the happy fair goers, sated from the annual shopping frenzy and depleted of all funds for petrol are often less than vigilant about the road in front much prefering to watch the sinking fuel guage and holding shrill conversations about what people are wearing in other vehicles. Sort of a 'What Not to Wear' on wheels while spaced out on caffine.
Distractions like errant motorcyclists are barely noticable (they may turn on the windscreen wipers to disperse the debris) with the setting sun in their eyes as they hurry home to their mates, minds maddened with lust fuelled by the aquisition of said trinkets at 'bargain' prices...
It's a dangerous time for non fair goers to be on the roads...

Now the truck story... Bloody Hell..... Trucks and mayhem... You just have to love those country roads!
Sorry I didn't keep on with you folks but in the end it turned out to be the right decision because I had bloody fantastic weather all day. :sunny: and I met my neighbour coming up the hill just after I left you so I turned around and went back up again....
David was on his 1952 Matchless 500cc single and it boogies along great up to about 90kph then she gets a bit wheezy so we took the back roads from the bottom of the hill through Whitemans Valley to Silverstream whee we caught up with a work mate who has just got his 1930 Stardard 'Flying 12' going. Man - what a cool car! Anyway - David knew his neighbour so we had a jolly old time before heading back over the Paekakareki Hill road at flank speed, two old brit bikes bellowing soot and sound all over the show - scaring the horses and pissing off the Audis...
Fired up the BBQ - steak and beer - perfect....

That was my first "kiwibiker ride". Damn good.
Thanks to:
* Jim for telling me to go (and organising, and navigating).
* The riders in front of me for teaching me stuff (I was right on the edge of my experience/ability for some of that ride).
* The rider(s) behind me for not laughing.
Apologies for misjudging my fuel. Lesson learned.
Dunno 'bout the TL's; but I stalled twice myself. Not as bad as the centre line I completely crossed on one corner; better emabrassed than, well, other stuff.
One good thing about being at the back; when I passed that truck and 4x4 I had no idea what had gone on. I did wonder why the farmers were staring.
Circumnavigated the Tararuas twice before on my Z. Turns out much better with other riders.
Cheers,
