Road bike leasing

Okay...I had a similar thread running a little while ago...and am now looking for some more feedback and ideas/comments..

what I want to know is...what would you want out of a deal if you were to lease a road bike...I'm not asking for your opinions in dollar value at this stage..or whether you would lease or not..but what would you want/expect if you were to look at leasing a bike...all types of roadbikes[sports,sports touring,commuters,retro's,cruisers,aventure tourers]

like: full maintained? or you service your self? KM's
options [top boxes for commuting,noisy exhuasts,saddle bags for touring on a cruiser,etc]
what do you think people would look for or like?

Insurance
few mods if wanted (pipe, filter, pc, remap)

Id prefer to have my own servicing done


Price is going to be the make or break poos, IMHO

your right...but...its tricky to work out figures to give to people till you know what they want/require and what they expect...

-Would prefer to have service costs included.
-Insurance should be optional as i may be able to get a better deal elsewhere.
-Would prefer to supply my own tyres.
-Sure I would like to have options - just as you get when you purchase.
-I would want to be able to have suspension modified - would never own a bike with standard suspension again.
-Would want to be able to do track days on it.

would probably be best to have servicing sorted by the person leasing it, i know most lease companies will give you a courtesy car when you are getting yours serviced, this would be a bit hard unless you did the servicing 'yourself' as in had a servicing shop where they got taken to to get serviced. (my mate leases a honda accord so it goes to the honda dealership to get serviced and he gets a replacement while he waits)

Personally i'd say it'd be best to lease them out as standard bikes. It all becomes a bit hard when you start putting mods in to the equation.

Discounted tyres could be an option... unless replacement tyres are paid for in the lease cost.

I'd even sign some t-shirts and do the odd bit of after dinner speaking if I had to.

If you want to catch up sometime I could give an overview at a strategic level on how and why the leasing business makes money and how what people want (in terms of the asset) fits into this....

Only trouble with leasing a bike (or car for that matter) is that it only really makes viable financial sense if you're GST registered and "using it for business," i.e. able to claim tax back on every monthly payment as an expense - just like a power bill or similar operating expense. If you're not GST registered it's cheaper to just buy the thing outright and sell it on a few years later. I suppose it depends on how good the deal is and how long you'd want to lease it for. Weigh up the costs over three years, leasing versus owning (on hp and cash, including depreciation) and see how much money you lose either way. You might find leasing to be cheaper than owning in terms of overall package... but I wouldn't expect so. At the end of the day, companies offer a lease package because they make more money out of it. I know; I sold them.

I'm thinking that sprotsbikes would be the worst sort of things for a lease deal.

But maybe there could be an opening for a lease-a-scooter operation. Leasing out scooters (<50cc and >50cc) in Auckland?

Do a package deal, bike and gear and basic training, full maintainence, lot of people would think a scoot makes sense if you live in the central city, but don't know enough about them to be confident buying one. And leasing sort of suits the whole "live in the CBD" lifestyle.

Where the real opportunity would be would be some sort of corporate deal with NZ Post or the utility meter reading companies. That's where the real advantages of leasing are, in providing a customer with lots of vehicles all much the same. Then you're providing a value added service not just a different way of financing.

Can't see it ever being fiscally sound for sprotsbikes. Harleys, just maybe ?

on a serious note leasing learner bikes might be a good avenue as alot cant afford the 5-6k a decent one costs.........

Call me nuts....but I kind of like the idea of being able to swap bikes around a bit, maybe a little like the "Dreamboats" concept where a fee is paid in return for use of a number of Boats over the year. Gixxer this month, Speed triple the next etc. Not sure if this would appeal to everyone or anyone other than me for that matter. Ill go back to sleep now....

Pipes. Screen. Servicing. Tyres...insurance myself.

Top box would not be stupid in some cases. Might have to do on case by case basis poos. Other than Suzuki brand too (not a pisstake).

I'd want a fixed cost each month that included insurance, tyres and serving. I'd like an option so I could specify choice of tyres and also for any custom additions (exhausts, racks, etc) to be added to the monthly lease cost. I'm not fussy as to who does the servicing as long as they are dealer-approved.

I'd also like an option like a finance lease so I could change bikes whenever I liked, without incurring penalties associated with early termination.

You're nuts! Feel better? lol - but seriously, there was a company in Ak who offerred this "Dream Boats" type deal a few years ago, maybe more, you could buy one of 2 or 3 packages, which gave you a different number of days on bikes, and you could choose anything from an F650 to a GL1800. Turns out to be a Bike Rental Co who were looking to utilise their fleet in the big off season we have here. I would have been keen, except there were no outlets (ie pick up points) near where I lived at the time

Total cost of leasing would need to match or be lower than owning.

Consider:
Maintenance
Fuel
Cost of upgrading
Insurance
Utility (i.e. limitations on trackdays?)
Availability of model you seek... i.e. do they even lease R1's or Brittens or...

If the lease paid for everything except tyres, I'd be happy. Some people are very particular about tyres, so letting the 'owner' pick the tyres would be good.

If there was no term minimum term on a particular vehicle, but I was bound for a year to lease something I would also be fine.

So then I could chop and change. On Monday, a VFR800 would be what I'd want, but on the 3rd of March, I'd want a GSXR or a R6 again.
