Hey

I'm looking for a ZXR250 "C" model rear brake lever, binned the ZXR yesterday and need to find a replacment part today before lunchtime, otherwise I'll have to call up and postpone my full license test...

Anyone got one?

if you get stuck, drill a hole in it & put a bolt through it,with an extra nut to lock it in place, its a five minute job

thats a good idea... Do you think when the driving instructor checks out my bike that he will accept that as "safe"?

Rear brakes are for pussies.

Are you a pussy?

Yeah, I thought so.

Pussy.

Surely if it is solid & the brake operates,it should be fine
But you know what these bureacrats can be like

lol well I have a pus.... well I actually have two :)

I hardly ever use my rear brake, just don't wanna fail my test before I even get on my bike... that would suck

When is the test happening.......?

So that gives people an idea of the time frame in which to help you out.

Maybe you could 'borrow' one off another ZXR250 for the duration of the test and then 'return' it afterwards.

Oh and good luck with the test as well.

Do they inspect the bike that closely? My impression is they do a lights, horn, indicators, brake light, quick look sort of thing.

Stand in front of it, and keep your foot on it. I assume you can work it well enough to activate the stop lamp.

Strictly speaking it should be to WoF standard , and I don't think a bolt would pass a WoF. Fine for a gear lever, brake lever's a bit different.

My test is Thurs 8th @ 3pm in Browns Bay.

Edit: Reason why I'm saying its urgent is that today is the last day I can call AA and cancel or postpone it.

Bike shop has none in stock, neither does Kawasaki, to order a new one in is $145.33 and will take anywhere between 10 working days and 3 weeks.

Spoke to the wreckers and they have 3 in stock but the guy didn't know if they would fit the "C" model, so have to wait until lunchtime until his boss comes in to let me know...

Yeah... I considered that option yesterday as Jono (affman) had a similar set up on his gixxer600 when he was helping me fix up the ZXR last year, with a screw in the lever...

But as mentioned I don't wanna fail before I even start...

Personally I'd take the part to a small engineering firm and get them to make one for you. Pity you're not local as there are some boys done here that could wack something up for you, even for the meantime

Just one thing I noticed. The footpegs are not the folding type. Is this legal as I have a set of fixed rearsets and didn't think I could get a warrent with them so haven't fitted them.

Yep, no rule says that foorpegs have to fold. And lots of bikes (especially older ones) they dont. Two of mine do, two don't. None of the Briddish iron did ('cept maybe a oddball scrambler or something)

I heard it was illegal to use the non-folding pegs on a road bike, but I've had about 4 WOF's and one compliance done on my bike and its never failed. None of the mechanics have even mentioned my pegs...

Just remembered Paul_nz's Guzzi having all sorts of problems getting a warrent with OEM braided lines and fixed pegs.

Might fit my rearests then.

BTW that lever looks like it could be bent back and a 6mm bolt or internally threaded piece fitted to it. It would just be a bit shorter. Kiwi ingenuity is in order I think.

Ixion

It's another of those urban myth things. What MIGHT get you, is that technically ANY change to footpegs requries low volume certification. So fitting rearsets (folding or otherwise) technically needs certifying (as would fitting folding pegs to a bike that didn't have them as standard).

Here's what the WoF testers manual says

Reasons for rejection

Mandatory equipment
1. A motorcycle is not fitted with adequate footrests:
a) for the rider, or
b) for the pillion passenger where there is a pillion
passenger seating position.
Condition
2. A footrest or footrest mounting:
a) is insecure, or
b) is weakened by corrosion or other damage.
Modification
3. A modification affects the footrest, and:
a) is not excepted from the requirements for LVV
specialist certification (Table 2𣇻), or
b) is missing proof of LVV specialist certification, ie:
i. the vehicle is not fitted with a valid low
volume vehicle certification plate, or
ii. the operator is not able to produce a valid
modification declaration or authority card.

Though, equally technically, you COULD leave the origianal footrests in place, just not use them!

Sweet as all!!

Used some "Knead It" and the lever is solid as rock... gave it a spray paint silver to try to cover up the jobby... hopefully it passes...

Found a spare for $20 but don't have $20 or any way of picking it up lol will sort something out.

Hey..

Be careful with that knead it stuff... they say it holds a bulldozer under a crane but  i had a broken footpeg and used it to fix that but it broke after 20km... vibrations etc...

I'm trying to find my old peg assembly that i broke as it has the leaver still in tact but so far no luck sorry. will let you know the outcome.

 Thanks for the heads up... I only need it to last until this afternoons test. *knocks on wood*

Fixing a brake lever with neadit?
At least it wasn't a front one i suppose.

It's suprising what you can get away with in an emergency, i misplaced the forks on my turbo hyabusa once and made some new ones out of rolled up newspaper, worked a treat!!

After i had a front blow-out miles from home i took off the knackered tyre and replaced it with a dead cat i found beside the road, smelt a bit but still good for 120+ knee down cornering!!

How did the test go?

Thats good to hear that you passed
I have to admit I was very dubious about the kneadit on the brake pedal

Yes it does,I carry it around in my tool box, have done may a repair to engine cases etc
Over the weekend I completed a dodgy repair, that I wont mention details, but Knead it came through again
