2nd February 2007, 18:31
THIS IS AN OLD THREAD
What - Newbie training/confidence session
When - Wednesdays
Where - Meet at shell westgate then directed to a practice area nearby
Why - A chance for new riders and learners to get practical advice on your riding and learn new skills from site mentors.
Time - 6.30pm (Departing 7pm)
Directed at new riders looking for confidence and training -
all are welcome to attend and learn
Start with a briefing from KB Mentor followed by a short practice session in the "training area" Then a slow paced ride to put your newly learned skills to work in the "real" world.
This will NOT be a normal group ride its going to be 1 on 1 with your mentor to a maximum of 3 bikes in a group.
A stop in the middle to ask questions and recieve feedback on your riding.
Finishing at Miss Q's in Westgate for a drink/food and debriefing from mentor.
----------
UPDATE:
The "march thread" of AWNMR is here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=45812).
* reason? well the thread just gets to long...
* Dont forget to sign up on the calender HERE (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1217&day=2007-3-14)
----------
Please ask if you would like an escort to the venue and I will organise something for you
Just a note here folks
We are a bunch of reasonably experienced riders who are happy to pass on our riding experience in an informal way
It will NEVER replace training from Qualified instructors like the Ride Safe course or the 1 on 1 training people like TRICIA1000 are able to give you --- Frosty
PLEASE FOLKS THIS IS NOT A GENERAL OPEN RIDE -IF YOU WANNA SHOW OFF YOUR MONO SKILLS DO IT ANOTHER NIGHT

Cheers for that Crashe, this will still go ahead through light rain - but if it tips it down/very windy etc then will cancel.
Would be good for everyone to get out in the rain and get to know their bike better, how it handles etc in wet weather.
Will give you all a "yay" or "neigh" by 4pm Tomorrow.

Do a monthly thread with a weekly sign up link not a weekly. way to complicated!
I am sending you a pm. Can you txt me if you cancel? I do not have internet at work. Too many people time waste in forums.

I am sure I will attend, it is not just the newbies that learn new things.
The greatest gift you can give you loved ones is yourself, not so much of you to give if you exit the dance before the music stops.
If there are no objections, I would like any non mentors who also choose to attend to bring a piece of paper.
On this piece of paper put the skill you feel you are most lacking.
We will draw these ideas from a helmet and see what people have identified.
Fold it up, I want this to be annonymous, people give better ideas this way.
We will draw ideas from a helmet until we run to 9pm or out of ideas.
PS, no disrespect to the other mentors who have a life and choose to live it, I don't have one and look forward to any reason to go for a ride....

After watching on Wed...more practise needed on weaving in and out cones. Was wondering if this exercise could be repeated this upcoming week.
I find it easier when I relax to do this exercise. Hips, shoulders, arms. Feel the bike swing as one with you. It's seriously a feel thing. Once this skill has been mastered, riding improves and when you approach twisties, the confidence levels are alot higher.
This is an exercise I love to do. It's because you can apply it to alot of situations.
Just be one with the bike!!!
I also practise riding between the white lines if there is a passing lane on your side of the road. (just make sure theres no other cars around though)

Ok, well the AWNMR has been going for a few weeks now and I think it's time for me to iron out a few 'wrinkles'.
In order for this to work effectively, it is important that each week we have a KB site mentor lead the session. Originally I had planned for Frosty to lead each week - but he cannot attend every week and may not wish to lead every week, and nor should we expect him to.
Last week Big Dog, took the initiative and made a suggestion for everyone to bring a piece of paper to write down their suggestion... I was the only one to actually do this.. thats why we spent the whole time doing counter steering.
So now I will look at selecting a mentor based on who has signed up on the calender, and using the PM system. Then when everyone arrives on WED that person then leads us all through the session.
Im hoping this system will ensure that we only have one 'chief' and lots of 'indians' and not the other way around, which has happend in past weeks.
Also if you are yet to buy a bike or without one, PM me and I can organise a pillion ride for you too get the feel back or learn. No excuses now folks!

And by the looks of it Disco_Dan, that is something you really need to practise doing, both of these things on that new bike of yours.

How about instead of a straight line we use more of the area and go up and down instead of along. three cones long which would enable counter steering in the middle with wider at the ends (basically u-turns) and to really spice it up could incorperate emergency stopping into it as well once everyone was comfortable enough with it.
Could even start it off long (distance between cones) then shorten the gap as the evening goes on ...
Not sure if I am meant to say the place, so hopefully you can figure out what I mean.
Just my 0.2c minus tax plus inflation rounded up to the nearest 10c ...

Was agood night (while I was there anyway). The usual expected improvements... people getting more confident in their braking and White Belt... awesome mate - I saw that last 3 pretty much on the money - you and Tide might want to go try out some higher speed stopping.
60 or 80 kph and brake rapidly (not full on braking to start with). Get the feel of the bike settling and stopping. Keeping it straight.
Move up to braking hard(ish) around corner or around objects.
All god guys.
Dan - where'd you end up?

A couple of mistakes are common here. Things to think about.
1) Leave you feet firmly planted on the pegs - your legs proportionately weigh quite a bit and if not on the pegs can unsettle the bike.
2) Keep some weight on the pegs - push down on the pegs at low speed as though you are going to stand up on them. The more weight you get lower down the better.
3) Keep your eyes up and ahead - keep your eyes looking horizontal, not down. Often people tend to look down at the ground at the point they want to stop. Your low speed balance will greatly improve if you keep your eyes horizontal and use the horizon to set your balance.

Bethells is a fairly easy road to do, it is however hard to do well which is I like it as a practice road.
Any noob can do the road, even the experienced can learn a thing or two about sighting lines etc. on corners that tight. Good mix of surfaces. Just be careful to always be able to stop in half the road you can see. Most of the locals drive like they own the road.

I reckon we have another rounabout session. Get the most out of it while we can.
Going round the roundabout both ways is great practice for many things - not just going faster and faster or getting your knee down.
By daring yourself to go past, and increase your comfort zone on the bike you are riding is probably the main benefit of such an exercise.
Every person who has been on the rounabout that i have seen has made an improvement in some areas - mostly confidence based which is great.
It also has the added bonus of being lovely seal, with a nice straight and areas for laying out cones, even a good area at the top of the hill for hooning up, emergency stopping, and u-turning to come back down.
So, who's in?

She is doing pretty well at narrowing the chicken strips on it, and should soon be able to make it to one of these events. She went on the road for the first time yesterday after 2 hours of grueling emergency stops and lazy eights.
A bit wobbly but no one was born able to compete with Valentino Rossi.
I'm pretty sure I looked a sight, riding it home for her I could not help singing to myself "Born to be mild"in by rocker style leather jacket.:Punk:
Certainly gained a lot of stares, especially when I blasted (or should I say farted) past a line of traffic on the Kumeu uphill right hander double lanes.
Well I was not sure it would make it up the hill with me on it so I had it pinned all the way to the stops all the way down the lead in and back up the other side, foot pegs dragging through the transition.:nono:
Perfect learner bike. Not too much power but still fun enough to have a laugh on.

Aint it fun when you put in for real what you practice.
Tonight we did emerceny braking on the wet road.
On the way home I had to do it for real when a young hoon spun out of control right in front of me on the north western motorway (on way home). Even got to use my hazzard lights for real. Cops came but as he didn't hit anything (apart from the bank) and no one was hurt the police werent to interested.
Thanks Big Dog for the pointers

Well it was a wet turnout... draggin jeans... no wet liner in jacket... very soggy Disco.
Got some good practice in though, and I think everyone learnt a bit more about their bike in the wet!
Kitty.. the wet patches? bwahahahaha ;)
Wondered where you got too "busy" ? ...and I was taking the mick outta you for having hazards ;) hehe
Big thanks to BIG DOG for braving the weather and sharing your experience!

Great to hear you got to see the real benefit of your time spent this evening. It can sometimes be interesting how close a relationship between when the universe provides you with the tools and when you need to use them.
I hope it was not too close a call for you.
Excellent to hear you fell you got some benifit.
:Punk:
Like I say riding in the wet does not need to be scary, just needs a different mind set, and having done your drills in the wet and the dark mean you can ride better in the wet and the dark.

oooer....no it's not just the way I walked.
Awesome work done tonight, and I learnt alot about my bike. Thanks Bigdog for the pointers. Much appreciated.
I was wet....due to the rainy weather :innocent: At least now I know my jacket aint waterproof. Lucky I wasn't wearing a white t shirt underneath!

Looking a lot smoother, and certainly more confident with the stoppers at the end. Nice work.

Big ups to Big Dog for taking this one... learned a lot, especially in the smaller group. I don't think the rain was a bad thing, certainly worthwhile to learn the braking in the conditions.

You really need to work on your use of the front brake, having said that by the time we went on to the next idea you were stopping in half the distance at a higher speed.
Keep up the practice you stop short (going far seems inappropriate in this case but you get what I mean).
