View Full Version : McJim is accursed....bin on Twilight road - no one hurt
McJim
4th February 2007, 20:06
Well another weekend - another ride with a friend and, you guessed it - another bin. No livestock involved this time.
Was coming along Twilight road and got to the far end thinking "I wonder what's keeping him - I know there were a couple of cars between us but he should have come past them by now."
So back along the road I go looking for signs of a bike slid over the edge - 2nd last hairpin there he is large as life grinning like a maniac. "Where's yer farking bike?"
"Look down mate."
"F*ckin' hell - were you on it when it went over the edge?"
"Yup."
"Y' alright?"
"Yup."
"How we gonna get yer bike up?"
"Dunno."
"I'll call someone."
"No reception."
"I'll go and get some reception then - se ya soon."
Many thanks to Hellraiser, The_Dover and Vixter for turning up and helping my friend get his bike up from a long way down - The_Dover has pictures.
Also a couple of anonymous bikers helped out - thanks to them if they read this.
I'll let the fella that rode off the edge of the road make his own admissions - he's sitting beside me checking my English as I type (there's a hint!).
Glad he's okay.

Never go riding with McJim ... could be the end of the bike
I hope you friend is ok ... and still your friend :)

:o Okay, where do I start this sordid tale of silliness? The combination of not riding for my usual milage and a lovely day to go riding, resulted in a less then sterling performance!
The details leading up to this? I was just pootling back home from a Yum Char in Newmarket. Popped into see McJim and Chickadee for a howyadoing... and McJim and I rode off into the distance.
The ironic thing is I did the Hunuas/Ardmore Quarry rd as easy as you can please, I was getting my groove back after being away from riding for a while and was appreciative of McJim showing me some clean lines to follow.
Well, heading into Twilight Rd from the Clevedon end, McJim overtakes a slow cager and I hang back to take my time (pull my head in and enjoy the ride so to speak!)
I was doing the usual thing and the first hairpin I come to (a lefthander), I feel my front tyre skit along and I somehow, twisted on more throttle :o  I would have made the corner, but instead ended up seeing a chasm of doom open up beneath me...
Tales of heads being snapped back flashed through my shrinking tunnel vision and I pulled my arms up to protect my noggin (useless thing that it is!)...
Space. The final frontier, this is the log of Captain gijoe1313 flailing through the multiverse...because he couldn't find reverse!
Anyhows, I found myself lying above my bike and thinking "How's my bike?"
I check to make sure I had no broken thingies, or other bleeding bitties (note technical medical terms) clambered up what seemed like the Eiger Junction.
And waited for McJim to come back and save my arse.
And waited.
And waited.
Finally, I hear his unmistakeable v-twin, pootling around the corner. He was looking down the bank obviously trying to find the plonker who couldn't ride a bike properly! :innocent:
In his words "Grinning like a maniac", the rest of the conversation you know!
More on this later ... I'm sure :o

I think I should stop being named - from now on refer to me as "The Scottish Rider".
I've been picking a few people up off the tarmac of late and I don't mind telling you - I ain't enjoying it. I said, in all seriousness, that I was thinking about selling the bike and going back to the cage coz one of these days I'll be picking up a friend with more than a broken bone or cuts and bruises.
gijoe is a fairly competent rider - he is bloody exceptional when you consider how long he's been riding (not long - just really far) he had a moment where he didn't do the right thing - that was all it took - one moment.
Be careful.

I would have never thought we would hear of GIJOE going down...comes across as a competent rider that has read up on all that there is of riding. As ya say McJim...only takes a sec and it could be all over...but lets look on the bright side..hes well and back to his normal but not normal self. Thats more than we could have wished for in a slide!

How's the bike? Not too bad? Little bit of gaffer tape and set to go?

Top survival skills Jo. I suprised the shit out of myself today by not falling over when my front tyre locked up for two metres during an impulsive stoppy attempt this arvo. I now have a fabulous skidmark outside my house. Nothing but dumb-luck saved my arse.

That sounds exactly like the accident where I wrote my ZZ-R off :/
That first hairpin you come to, and the front coming out from under you suddenly. Was it damp when you guys were riding?
I was unlucky enough to have a horse truck coming in the opposite direction that ate my bike for a snack...

I've been picking a few people up off the tarmac of late and I don't mind telling you - I ain't enjoying it. I said, in all seriousness, that I was thinking about selling the bike and going back to the cage coz one of these days I'll be picking up a friend with more than a broken bone or cuts and bruises.
The problem is that you can't decide whether your friends will keep riding or not, so all you're doing is choosing whether to be there or not. You've already made the decision to start, you've already made the friends. It's too late.
gijoe is a fairly competent rider - he is bloody exceptional when you consider how long he's been riding (not long - just really far) he had a moment where he didn't do the right thing - that was all it took - one moment.
That's all it ever takes. One moment, one patch of black ice, one unseen light-jumper.
Good news is that he's okay. He should get a few free beers out of it, maybe more if he's lucky.
;)
Be careful.
It's not the bullet with your name on it that you have to worry about, it's the one addressed "to whom it may concern." Being careful will lengthen the odds, but it won't make riding safe.
But the only way to avoid the danger completely is to avoid motorcycles. And beer. And women. And going out when it's dark. And going out when it's light. And going out without a scarf on. And sneezing chickens.
Personally, I dread living life without bikes, beer and my woman. I could probably get by without scarves and chickens, though.

Thanks for all the well-wishers people, I'm glad I'm still able to kick and fuss over what a plonker I was (don't we all?) - if I left all and well enough alone (not doing the usual "survival" instinct response) and let my bike ride it out, I would have just dropped into the corner more and made it. I decided to try and counter the bike and ended up lying in a nice comfy bank in the shade, contemplating the lessons that biking can dish out quite quickly.
In my case, I was away from riding for a while (the little pootle I did with That Scottish Rider That Shall Not Be Named, was my longest in three weeks), I had not been doing my usual reading of my motorcycling literature (Hough's Motorcycling handbook of sensible riding, Code's book of knowing when to twist the wrist, etc. al).
I know That Scottish Rider That Shall Not Be Named has been going through some soul-searching moments right now, and he is wrestling within the grip of moral reasoning - I in no way blame him, he just happens to have a passion for riding as great as mine and have ridden many, many enjoyable km's together in the company of like-minded souls.
Whenever I hear/read about other riders having their own moments, I always feel  and have that "there but for the grace of God go I" mantra in the background. I just hoped whenever or where-ever should it happen to me, I would be able to live through the experience and be relatively intact (no guarantees on that though! :eek5)
Bike bits can be replaced, I had no dignity or pride to lose (since I have lost those long ago!) I suffered very little injury...I did more scratches to myself doing gardening the other day  Just have a little pain in my right back, which lets me know I'm alive ... and I've felt worst from some of my powerlifting gym sessions!
I love biking with a passion, it goes beyond much of my words to have that soul-lifting feeling when you are enjoying your ride and being one with your bike, your environment and the moments that pass when you have the pleasure of that little twist of the wrist.
My little ol'Hornet isn't that badly off (I know you were just waiting for this part! "How's the bleed'n bike you plonker?" I hear you yell :o )
- Broken indicators (I was intending to replace with LEDs anyways!)
- Bent handlebar (I was intending to replace with another set anyways!)
- Smashed Stebel (:crybaby: Oh poopies, I was so enjoying that...WarlockNZ...next order you do, I'll have another thank'n yew! :innocent: )
- Scratched left hand Hornet decal (Wah! I's not so happy about that )
- Scratched left hand can (Hellraiser said to include it with my claim, along with the boots...helmet...leathers which was destroyed beyond recognition...)
But my gear didn't even get dirty! Most of the muck I got on it was from the recovery operation of my reposing ride
All in all, I got off pretty damn lucky, all things considering ... when I surveyed the scene, aye caramba ... a few metres either side ... methinks my Asphalt angel was doing some serious intervening somewhere! ::shifty:
A special note of thanks goes to Dover and Vix, Hellraiser and the several other motorbikers who stopped to lend their assistance. A good bloke in a brand new Holden even offered his assistance of a trailer, garage and the use of his cage to tow my bike back up!
Today, I've done a good looky over my biker...all is well, just need the time to get the parts delivered to me and installed. Will be driving the cage for a little whiles methinks!
Once again, To that Scottish Rider Who Shall Not Be Named - Thanks for your friendship, it heartily filled me with the feeling of wellbeing just knowing you. To the others who have watched, read and shook their head when they read about my idiotic posts about biking and other blarney, I extend my acknowledgements that I couldn't have made biking this enjoyable in my life without your input and sharing of knowledge, skills and daftness!
I'm alive, I'm well, I'm reflecting on all the things I need to do to become a better, safer rider. Long may we all do so too!

Glad you're OK J, and hope you're back in the saddle soon. Had my first bin on that road too, but got off much lighter...( This was your first.... right? )
:o I think it doesn't qualify, since Dover said I should have been riding a Gixxer...which meant I could clear the trees properly  Anyhows I got off dang lightly considering the other options (which I shudder to think of )
A nice soft punga tree to rest my bike against, cool bank to lie on..almost like a holiday no? I would have started a thread on this, but The Scottish Rider Who Shall Not Be Named needed to exorcise his demons in his cranium.
I would have called it "Second Binning Practice With McBinn...er That Scottish Rider Who Shall Not Be Named!"
And no disrespect to those fine Scottish personages which I have had the honour of binning with, if'n ever I was in want of binning, it would be with the Scottish I dare say!

T'was a full moon that day? If'n I known that, I would have never dared the Gods of Riding, suffice to say that - not one of us goes out there riding with the intention to suffer a non-planned transportation movement. We ride because we dare to do the things we love to do so much!
If we were sensible, we would never entertain the idea of riding two wheels of freedom, the attendant joys and miseries means it can be a rollercoaster ride. The high highs, the low lows - but does that stop us? No! We do all we can to ride as safely and enjoyably as we can (or so I hope!)

Actually, I think I'm channelling David Bellamy at that moment?
"And, look, the luscious and fecund fronds of the Silver Fern has given brilliant birth to a stupendous fruit! A red Hondaberry, desposited by a lesser known species of Plonker Gittus Maximus Idiotus. Truly, it is simply a marvellous miracle of that interface between nature and the world of men...I'm simply beside myself with the litany of life that bedevils the beauty that is New Zealand's own!"

I like that, well put.

Keeripes man!
First a kamikaze fowl koshes you, then it's mud pie making time, now you're going all feral and making a hovel in the bush?
T'was fortunate you were with an accomplished riding companion, That Scottish Rider would be one with whom I would happily pootle our fair roads, and I for one am jealous that you managed to secure his companionship that day!
Big ups to the KB rescue team, I hope the only time I ever have need of assistance from any of you, is in the disposal of excess beer.
Glad all is well J!

Hey what can I say.........
But I have also ridden with 'THAT Scottish Rider' and I survived.....
Admittedly it was only a short ride....... from his home to Te Rapa motorway onramp.
He even was going to offer to escort me again tonight....... but I have found I can find my way out now.... so I left him at home.
Even got shown video footage of the said 'off' corner....... and some pic's.
So all I will say is gijoe1313 is blardy lucky no car was coming from the other direction.... and that you had a soft landing of NZ ferns. (no not the netball team)
Cheers Chickadee and McJim for the seat cover and a lovely meal tonight.

:gob: Birnam Wood has come to Dunsinane? Oh woe, oh a thousand woey woes! That Scottish Rider Whom We Shall Not Name has broadened his game, sharpened his bodkin's axe and gone gunning for more of the same!
He shall not tarry long on the twisties,
He shall not cast down the plate of L
He is simply That Rider,
Of which we cannot Name!
By the twisting of my throttle,
I think something wicked this way comes! :eek5:
What are you trying to do? Discourage others from becoming teachers or something? Watch out people, spend too many times going over shakespeare or poetry with your class and eventually this will happen to you too.

Ying tong iddy i po! Less of the lip laddy or I'll get you to summarise the perils of NCEA in regards to giving students the learn! :msn-wink:
Oh wait...too late...
Forthwith, I shall endeavour to keep my immaculately contained minutae of motorcycling ramifications in a singulary statement. This is also known in that juxtaposed kiwism of colloquialism humor "Yeah. Right" and the sheer splendiferous superfluous subject bantering attributed to me.

My little ol'Hornet is rideworthy again! :woohoo: Just having probs with the lights ... not turning on with ignition and staying on! So no midnight madness out to Gisborne yet!
s'funny, the passing flasher works - the horn works, even my little bling lights
I've spent several hours testing wires and all, buggered if I know - just going to spend some coin and get some professional to look at it (unless there is an auto-electrician here on KB!)
Nice having a school tech room as a workshop - just heated up the bars and banged it on an anvil to get it semi-sorted. New ventura bars arriving on Monday ($38) and new light brackets (the old ones were bent, I pinged them back to shape...but I want new bling :innocent:)
Righto...Westpac ride tomorrow anyone? :scooter:  :msn-wink:

Have just returned from my hoddy lays. Went to Napier courtesy of clan McMSTRS (Yungatart & hXc).
Did a ride with a bunch of people down there on Wednesday night - relaxed pace - no bins and then me and MSTRS went for a blat on Thursday - 130km ride and he didn't bin the bike.
PLUS I rode there on Sunday and back today without any minties moments. I now feel my jinx has been lifted and other riders can now feel safe to join me again should they so wish :)

It extends to cages too.
Went to Welly on business. Picked up a Ford Futura from Hertz and drove to:
Masterton
Palmerston North
Levin
Wanganui
Hawera
Felt tired so asked the boss if he wants to drive to New Plymouth - he says yeah.
10km out of Hawera he gets pinged for 128kph :( while overtaking a car that turned out to be a mufti.
Needless to say I drove the car from New Plymouth back to Auckland.

Good to hear you're back on the road again gijoe :) Not feeling any after effects from the crash? Then again, judging from the pose in the picture on the day, "after effects" might be normal effects for you... :dodge:
Glad the Hornet's getting looked after well too. Just a pain that the headlight won't work. Still, at least it's summer, you get much more daylight luckily. :niceone:

Mr GiJo1313 now has a proper hoonmachine. With a working headlamp. Once he learns to ride it as a twosmoker should be ridden (which I suspect he does not , yet), I stand in some trepidation at what may be unleashed on society. Add the well known hoon-inducing effects of two stroke smoke to a personality already apparently hyper-summit-oruvver, and I wonder what the result will be.
