Hi
Had some problems with the car (1990 diesel Camry) a couple of months back, spent ~$700 to get it to pass WOF, thought we had it fixed but this morning on the way to work just before we got in the car park we saw that it was completely overheated (the needle was as high as it could go on the temperature gauge) and the engine was steaming a bit and the sound was terrible. We think that it's not worth getting fixed again so we're thinking of disposing of it, but we've never disposed of a vehicle before so wondering what do we do? Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Hopefully it's just a blockage in the radiator or something equally silly. The cooling system's not the most complex system in a car... there's a reasonably chance you'll fix it without great expense.

Don't panic.

Most likely to be the thermostat may be stuck open ... that'll stop the water reaching the radiator, and prevent the engine being able to be cooled. That's a whole $25 or so for the part. Easy peasy to replace, or a mechanic could do it for you quick smart (I'd expect a minimum charge on it personally... but I'm speaking out of school here).

Suss the problem before you decide the car's fate... you could do yourself out of a good car for no good reason.

Cook a 2C and you will crack the head for sure...water pump problems are common, and as they are driven by the cambelt it gets expensive.Break a belt and the camshaft will break into 5 pieces.Sure it could be just a faulty radiator cap,but on a 1990 Camry that's unlikely.Surender your plates for the rego and call the Car Collection Company.Sell the tyres.

You could sell it on trademe, people buy everything, could get 500 bucks if its tidy on the outside.

Being overheated like that I'd say the head would be toast, probably cheaper to buy another motor. If you want to consider another motor drop me a PM i know the owners of a Toyota wrecker

If you just want out of it:
try sell it on trademe
if it doesnt sell give ram it a call (free vehicle collection in any condition), they are part of pick a part,

but do surrender the plates at PO, if you have rego left and miles left you can get a refund for them

I'd put my money on it being stuff also, you'd probably be able to pick up another 2C but it'll cost you the price of the car and then you have to fit it so not really worth the hassle.

Park it outside big scrap metal place and take the plates into the post office or whoever else takes them off you and fill out the appropriate paper work
