View Full Version : The 4x4/SUV of toddler transport?

Today I witnessed two of those three wheeled mountain buggy/stroller things travelling, with mothers in tow, happily up the bike lane along Greenlane, against the traffic..... :spudwhat: If you had a little kid, would you run a stroller against the traffic, on the same level as the cars, on GREENLANE RD!!??? Looked dangerous to me... Also there would be the issue of oncoming cyclists... Wouldnt like to be in the buggy in that crash...
Still, this seeming blatant disregard for the reality of the situation got me thinking....
The buggies run on larger wheels than normal toddler transport, they are made to go over rough terrain, and are capable of doing so if not built shoddily/with silly weak plastic bits that fall off. However, they are usually only used around town, to negotiate such hazards as footpaths and kerbs. They are mainly driven by the jogging/fitness type well-coiffed moms, who really have little need for their advantages and don't use them to their potential. They have become a fad/must have look, because normal prams are just soo last century dear. There is a rash of them out every weekend at the parks, carting little johnny around the soccer fields.
The obvious question must be asked... Are these buggies the SUV of toddler transport??? :spudbooge

Brother -clearly you dont have kids.
Those old push chairs were/are a total nightmare to push around anything rougher than a shopping mall.
Those big wheel things negotiate kerbs and all the other shit ya deal with walking-but never notice it -oha and do it soo easy.

Well, I dunno about wheel size, but we have a double (front/back) pushchair and it does enormous tankslappers any time I push it along at greater than a fast walking pace.
Anything better than *that* would be nice...

By your logic then you would need 2 prams - an around town and a weekend park type one as well.
The 'Off Road' Buggies for kids are outselling all other prams by phenomonal amounts due to the fact you can take them anywhere. You can walk through town and then take the scenic route through the park/bush on the way home.
Sorry - but I think you have taken a pretty niave view here.....I would purchase one in a instant must as mentioned by the others.

You should have seen me doing wheelies (with sound effects) along the Edsel St zebra crossing outside West City.
I got the Look for that. It didn't get better after I explained that it was the only way to avoid the tankslappers under hard acceleration, either.

Your missus sounds like my ex--no sense of humour when it comes to their kids.
My ex borrowed baby bikies baseball bat one day when I took him out for a ride on my old 1300 yam.(um he was 6 months old at the time) . She was nice enough to wait till Id taken my new helmet off before bashin me with it. -only plastic -yea you get hit with it and see if ya say only anything.

Nah, she's cool. She wasn't worried about the wheelies; it was all the people looking at us funny. She doesn't *do* embarrassment. Poor thing. I should have come in a box with a disclaimer.

How the hell do you get a six month old on a bike? In a frontpack? I've joked about doing that myself a few times, but that *is* dodgy. If you'd binned... shudder.

It must be said... I'm well aware of the fact that almost any other pushchair on the market is absolute crap, with those tiny little castors. Infact I would probably buy one of these, just because I'd get so annoyed with the bloody pushchairs......
BUT....
That doesnt make them not the SUV of pushchairs.......

Brother Keep in mind a few factiods.
The bike concerned was a Venture royalle- Basicly a Yamaha goldwing.
Bloody huge -as in cage driver see it -cage drivers are afraid of it. :blah:
It had a big top box and two panniers with--ahh never mind -lets just say the bike had to turn totally upside down for there to be any chance of him hittin the deck.
He was in a special car seat that he couldnt fall out of -and sat in the propper place-behind me. -Ill see if i can dredge up pictures of us on it.
We went for a 40-50km meander round the local streets
Actually my ex's only concern was that he had a cycle helmet on and she thought it was too heavy for him -
To add insult to her injury he screamed his lungs out when she tried to take him off the bike.
