That's right. My immaculate new VTR250 is no more thanks to an ignorant cager.
The story:
Proceeding along Clovelly Road, Bucklands Beach towards Musick Pt and was approaching the intersection of Waller Ave and Clovelly which as locals may know is a right hand turn for me past the intersection with traffic on the left (waller Ave) on a stop sign.
Saw a Nissan at the stop sign, as I was coming around the corner at about 40km/h he pulled out right in front of me. I hit the brakes and my bike hit the road, I slid for 5 meters or so on my right arm/ right side. I managed to avoid hitting the cage who saw me at the last minute and slammed on the brakes.
I got up and sprinted over to the cage unleashing a torrent of abuse that any sailor would be proud of, I was in shock screaming at the driver that he could have killed me!
Driver was about 17-19 years old driving a car his dad had insured with 4 mates in the car. Guess what...... He didn't see me! What a suprise.
Apparantly a passing cager didn't think to stop and check I was ok but rang the ambulance to report a "Major Accident" involving a motorbike. Therefore an Ambulance with 5 staff inside turned up and three incident cars from Howick Police.
The cops assured me it was totally the drivers fault and they are ticketing him, plus no warrant.
I am ok... just a few friction burns on my right arm.... my neck is getting a bit sore as I write this but nothing too bad.
So the damage:
This mornign my VTR was immaculate and beautiful.
Firstly,
Cordura Jacket written off as I slid down the right side on my arm
Leather boot s have scuffing downthe side
The Bike:
It was soo beautiful and now:
- Front mudgaurd scuffed and damaged at the front
- Front wheel rim scuffed
- Right mirror and brake lever scratched up and bent
- Right peg scuffed and feels loose
- Side of headlight smashed in
- Front right indicator smashed but still works!
- Instrument cluster smashed but seems to work
- Scraping all the way down my beautiful shiny exhaust pipe and maybe a chunk or two out of it
- fairing behind the seat marked slighly
Managed to ride home (Less than 1km away) but brakes feel spongy too.
I am very glad I am ok. My mother is REALLY upset. It could have been so much worse if I was going faster and slid further into oncoming traffic.
I don't think I could have done anything to avoid coming off, it happened so very fast.
Thanks to "The Scottish Rider" who has given me advice over the phone on how to approach the insurance issue.

I think I really scared him. Stuck my head through his window and yelled for quite a while, suprised myself cause normally I'm the laid back sort... funny what a near-could-have-been-worse-death-type-thing experience will do for you. After I calmed down he was very apologetic and admitted fault straight away.
Hope to be back riding as soonas the bike is fixed and my mother stops crying :(

Good to hear that you came away reasonably OK. Too bad about your bike though. Get back on as soon as you can.

As long as the police have charged him that means he's officially 100% at fault, so you shouldn't have to pay any excess or anything to get the bike fixed and hopefully have insurance for the jacket as well.

at least he was apologetic - hopefully, realising how much damage he'd caused will make him more aware next time he's out on the road
------------ good that you are reasonably ok
really sorry to hear about your bike though - HATE it when that happens

good thing your ok. Bikes are easy to fix and you have a good story to tell your mates.
When I had my first off I didn't tell my parents till about 3 months later cause I knew my mum would be upset. Don't let it get you down if he admitted fault and the cops were there you'll at least get the bike back up to scratch. Maybe buy some leathers to replace the cordura so you dont' have to keep buy new when you bin (but still put in insurance cailm :innocent:)

Ah, dammit. Sorry to hear that. Glad you are OKish. Had a similar myself not 15mins ago, but didn't kiss the road. Old coot in a black MkII Zephyr (had it since new?) pulled out on me, saw me at the last minute and stopped - right across the lane!! Went behind him, 'voicing' my displeasure all the way.
Sometimes it's only luck making the right call, as to what to do in those situations.
Hope you and bike heal quick

Glad to hear that's all you got (and sorry to hear about the bike).
Might pay to go for a checkup - ACC will pay since it was an accident, and if you need any physio or anything you're best to find out asap. Sometimes the adrenaline can hide wrenched muscles and stuff.
Ha ha I just realised I must sound like your mum! (Your poor mum... she didn't bring you up properly all these years just to have you ride around on a crazy 2-wheeled machine!)

while it is good you are ok - just reread your 1st post - a car came thru a stop sign you were doing 40 and when you hit brakes you fell off.
From 40kmph you should be able to stop quickly and smoothly in an emergency situation - other wise this is just going to keep happening and you will always have the other guy to blame - while it is a pain in the arse - take a look at your own skills and start working on them so it doesnt happen again. the only protection we have is our eyes and our skills, the helmets and leathers are to limit damage.

I accept your point. The road is a sharp right hander and I had begun turning just before I had to brake, that is why I believe I came off.
I am a careful rider and have been to the BRONZ RRRS course. Perhaps with a few more months experience there may have been a different conclusion but at the moment I am pretty happy that I avoided hitting anything substantial.

Just slightly OT, but as you live in the area too.... I had someone pull out in front of me on Whitford Road at the top of the hill some time back, ie going out of Howick, over the bridge, up the passing lane, left, left, right and at the crest of the hill there are often cars crossing the road. There was another accident there yesterday afternoon....
Lots of bikers use that road.... so be aware..

Ooh, bugger. But any off you can walk away from is better than one you can't. I hope insurance works out for you on this.
Lesson 1: Always assume car drivers haven't seen/can't see you and react accordingly.
Lesson 2: Assume that if car drivers have seen you, they want to kill you.

Heya,
See if you can pillion with someone on Sunday, it would be worth attending. With all the bikes attending, I'm sure there would be someone with a spare seat on the rear for you. I'd take you -but I'm still on my learners as you know. You could always look into hiring a bike for the day and getting the insurance company to pay for it?
Glad you're okay, hope the Blue Beut's up and running again soon.
My hubby the Scottish rider I'm sure will be with you having a look at the damage. Hope it's not dented your riding, but you'll discover that when you're back on again. Corners might be a bit heart in mouth, which is what happened after my bin.
Cheers

I agree with the White Blur... you need to attend this if only in a pillion capacity.
Great idea about the hire bike too Chick, I wouldn't have thought of that - glad my other half didn't think about it when her cage went driving yesterday, I wouldn't have shiny new pants otherwise, nor the forced 2 weeks of riding I must now "suffer" muhaha...

It's still roadworthy, 5 minutes in Botany Honda and they'll sign off all the bits that need replaced. They will price them up and send a bill to the insurance company and from experience all these parts will be "Ex Japan" which means 2 weeks before they're here to fit. Meanwhile there's no reason I can see for not riding it around - it's roadworthy, just not very pretty - this has never stopped Donor has it?

I know exactly where you are coming from ... same circumstances as me! I've only told my brother and neither my mum nor dad know
Now, my grandma..she has eyes like a hawk and even in her cancer fugue... commented when I visited her "You are moving rather stiffly...did something happen?" :sweatdrop: Thank gosh I've been doing a hellish amount of manual labor for the family lately so I had a good excuse!
Sorry to hear about your incident, I'm in the process of sorting my bike out - but I won't be doing any insurance claiming (nice to know little two fiddys are "easy" to repair)
I guess both of us will be back to basics and getting our mojo back! Making haste slowly so to speak
Please, everyone, ride safely out there - ask yourselves those little questions ...
- Have I done a full check on my ride lately?
- How is the condition of my mental/physical state?
- Is my gear up to snuff and is there anything I need to attend to ASAP?
- Why am I riding today? Where am I going? Who knows what I am doing?
- Am I feeling right? Any funny feelings/niggle that I can't explain?
- When was the last time I practiced my emergency stops?
- What's the weather like? Any info that I can call on to inform my planning?
I know I do most of those little mental checklists ... but I do confess, when I rode that day on my bin, I cannot recall doing anything remotely like that.
In fact, that was a warning bell, which I didn't hear ... three weeks not riding consistently? I should have thought once, twice, three times about it!
Sorry for the OT there! :o Just glad that someone else I know is okay from it all ...

Shiny? Learning toy? You need a mighty GN my boy. Can't afford 5k? Psthorr, we wave our private parts at 5k.
For 5k you can have a brand new GN and enough money left over for approximately 100 dozen beers. Or, choose to go the 2nd hand route and get GNs off trademe that learners have 'grown out of' and you could get two of the mighty beasts.

Gonna fix up the instrument cluster tommorrow with tape and probably tape up the slave of my jacket as well for the ride on Sunday.
