Thanks to Lissa we all got ourselves out of bed, and on the Welly side of the 'takas we were greeted by a glorious day. About time too.
Lissa had arranged that we meet at Caltex Rimutaka (Rimutex) at 10am with the plan being that it would be a combined ride of Wairarapa, Wellington and Ashhurst riders. Rememeber this thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=42901 - great job Lissa.
Alice was down from Napier to join us too so it was good to meet her.
So you'll see my photos start with the bikes grouping at Rimutex.
We decided to give the VFR a run and Mrs merv came on the back with me.
Nasty was riding Grub's CBR and doesn't it look a picture with its candy colours.
Edit: We were asked can we put names on pics - that's always the tricky bit with a crowd so here goes all people listed left to right (if I get any wrong and put ? because I can't remember let me know):
Pic 1: Chrissie, jeff, merv
Pic 2: Mrs merv, MAXIMUSDEMERITUS, rfc85, elle33f, Lissa, jeff, phoenixgtr, bistard, Chrissie and 2 more in the background ?
Pic 3: rfc85, Lissa, elle33f, Chrissie, jeff, phoenixgtr

Well even though I'm on broadband, my son sucks a lot of the bandwidth and this isn't a fast process.
We got a big turnout of bikes of all sorts - that's what biking is about eh!
OK give me a hand naming people here sorry I've forgotten your names in the first four pics.

What a LAUGH!! I had the most excellent day today guys - thank you. Sels1 - you are such a lovely guy ya know - and your wife for smiling when she turned up to us lot!!
Was excellent putting more faces to names in here. The ride back was great - got a bit windy though just on this side of the Haywards and the Takas were dry so that was great.
Thanks everybody for a great last day of freedom!

Rimutex as you can see has a pretty big bike parking area and still the bikes kept arriving, with riders of course.
MD turned up on his BMW, but then he'd already been over to the Wairarapa when he decided to join us for a little while. He's only had that bike what seems like a few minutes and he's already getting through tyres on it.
Pic 2: ?, Nasty, think its Grub and ? in the background, Darkman, ?, elle33f, the spunky Kendog (he is, so I've been told), bistard, ?, sugilite's back, Bonez, Gineen, ?, MAXIMUSDEMERITUS (have I got you right?)

You can see how lovely and sunny it was in Upper Hutt at Rimutex and I do say that like I'm surprised. We went to HB for the wine and food festival and you know unlike when 'tart came down here with sunshine HB was kind of dull all weekend, and here we are back home and its looking good.
So everyone was standing around having a chat and enjoying it.
Then it was off to the top of the Rimutakas and as you can see it was ... well ... dull!

After hearing from MD that it was cold over in the Wairarapa I pulled my rain jacket out of my very useful Ventura bag and put that on. Next thing I know Sels1 is telling us there is a change of plan and we will go back down the hill and then take Moonshine Road (I thought that will be great with a bunch of road bikers - it is a lot of fun on a trail bike for sure) and then we'll go over Paekak hill to Raumati with the plan of eating at the Waterfront pub.
Lissa as ride leader had this all covered - she did a fantastic job.
So a few more pics at the top of the 'takas and then the shady looking shots are in the middle of Moonshine Road. Not everybody went that way - probably just as well as it is a narrow tight road.
Sugilite lead us through here and you can tell he's had a bit of dirt experience too and doesn't mind the tight stuff - it is sealed these days though so some of the fun has gone from it.

Then we stopped to re-group again at the top of Paekak Hill and the weather was still fantastic. By then I took my rain jacket off again.
That VFR doesn't scrub up too bad for a 13 year old bike eh!
Jeff's Norton doesn't look too bad either does it. Mind you Mrs Kendog, in the 3rd pic where Jeff is with Mrs merv he still looks kinda surly while Mrs merv is smiling beautifully. What's up Jeff do all the Jap bikes make your Norton grumble at you or something?

The story continues that we went down to Raumati, and found as tends to happen at these beach places, much like on the first of the round the bays rides, the seaside cafes are just too popular.
So Sels1 says "all around to my place for a BBQ". Now the man is a legend as we only just had a BBQ there back a bit over a week ago.
From my perspective we all had a pretty good ride - kinda shorter than first planned and it was nice to put a few more names to faces but there are still many more I never seem to remember. It was great to meet the Wairarapa crew and as you said Elle we all had a bit of a laugh. The ride went without mishap except for Grub riding a borrowed Bandit suffered a deflating tyre. I never saw him after this happened so I'll leave him to tell that story.
We seem to be into BBQ season now summer has finally arrived and remember if you aren't going to the sprints on Sunday we can ride up the coast to meet Zukin and his Mrs as the ride on their fundraiser to be followed by a BBQ at Nasty and Grub's place. See you then.

What an awesome day guys... BIG thanks to everyone who showed up. I'm sorry the weather looked like crap our side of the hill.... but apparently it was a brill day here too. Have to organise another ride this time making it around Lake Ferry. :scooter:
I may have been Ring Leader... but without Sels1, I would have been lost. Thanks for all your help, and for the brilliant bbq Sels!!! It was great!!!
Thanks to everyone who came far and wide... the Ashhurst Boys esp!!!
Thanks to the kendogs... for being a laugh, and for Nigel not nicking off with my GN when I know he was dieing too. Thanks to elle, ronin and kinje for sticking with me.... (some of the time) even though my Ginny was having a hard time keeping up on the way back. Thanks to Merv for the photos.. awesome. And Grub and Nasty... sorry to hear about the flat tire. :(
I have photos... will post them soon.

I couldn't help but give in to temptation & went back up the Taka's after leaving the Piecock summit. It had cleared & was sunny & warm. There was a friendly mufti-cop in the goldy coloured Honda Accord taking video of vehicles crossing the centre line on the way down & a marked HPcar prowling the hill too.
What a great day, Ka Pai!!
P.S nice picture of the BigRedZed there Merv, cheers.

What I find fascinating in all our pics of the Paekak Hill is just how the boy-racers have smoked up that lookout point with their burnouts. I guess one day we will hear one has stuffed up and driven over the edge. There is a lot of rubber left there.

Interesting day.
Left on time this morning at 8am (that is a shocker to start with)
Had a not bad run down to waikanae. Got a little amusement with a cop setting up one of those machines that tell you your speed as you are going past. GarryH chickened out of testing how high he could get the numbers to go but then the cop was sitting right next to the machine
Ride over the akaterawaawaawwawassassasswssa? interesting road that is. Not alot of room for error.
Made the meeting point on time (another shocker)
Up to top of takas and back down. Played follow the leader all over the place. Some nice twisty roads. When we got to the BBQ I was only 30k from my sister who had a kid 3 months ago and I hadn't seen yet so I took the oppourtunity to run down there and say hello.
The ride home was a bit of a wander. Nice weather and no trouble.
Cheers

Ahh that would prolly be Spittie (Nick). He's had his bandit for a week and that was it's 3rd ride for him. Apparently it had been parked up somewhere for months so when we lost him on the run up Kaitoke it was because it refused to go faster than 40 all of a sudden. Thought I might write up my ride report from the Wairarapa point of view.
Woke up early…. texted the rapa crew to make sure they werent sleeping in, then jumped on KB...I'm annoying like that. Sweet, ride was still on. Weather was cloudy, but not raining, patchy blue sky. Meet up with kinje and Ronin. Tooted our way through featherston.. only cause Ronin has a stebel horn thingymebob. Elle decided to bugger off up the hill before us, so we meet her up the top. Weather looked stunning on the Welly side.
At the top of the hill got a txt from cowboyz… saying they were in Waikanae having a fag and a coffee… thought we better head off to rimutex incase the Ashhurst boys beat us there… no fear they didn’t.
Large turnout.. more than I expected and after a few words from Sels1 we all went off up the hill, the weather looked disgusting in the Wairarapa… so a quick Plan B was drawn up… off to Raumati we went. Apparently we were suppose to turn off at a place called ‘Moonshine road’ never heard of it, so over the Haywards we went… little did we know that Mrs Kendog had been following some biker who wasn’t on our ride.
Stopped at the top … lovely! Then off to Sels1 for a bbq… awesome.
Then off home… quick stop at rimutex for a coffee, another stop at the top of the takas… me coming last because of the wind not my riding ability.

OMG Lissa we must have been on a different ride because I remember some things differently.......
Firstly,. I was having a leisurely stop at the top of the hill at about 9.40 when these three hoons screamed into the park and stopped the peace........I followed them down to Rimutex because I was worried that they were on some kind of drug......only to find there were more than 40 of them! I casually joined in to go back UP the bloody hill and then back down the same side for reasons unknown. I can only say here that i was obviously taken in with the group mentality because i toddled along, following instructions to the T except I made the mistake of following some blue, white, silver and black helmeted hoon on a hornet.....of the female kind - who had spotted some cute guy NOT in our group ride and we ended up totally off the track at Haywards:laugh:
Luckily I growled the first two guys who lined up at the petrol station and told them that it was THEIR fault that we were there BUT it turned out that they weren't with us at all so I looked at who was next in line and HELLO!! It was that MrsK woman!!
Anyhow, we toodled off trying to keep up with Lissa on her GN and met the rest of the group at the top of the Paekak Lookout and what an amazing day. The bikes looked amazing and the view was as well but chatting was the best!!
Then off to Raumati and then Sels - thanks guys - and then home following that bloody GN again up the Paekak Hill to the turnoff where we said a teary goodbye and goodluck to the Kendogs and then were buffeted to the Rimutex for a coffee and GOOD OLE ME decided to give that coffee a 10 second BOOST in the microwave but FARK - it was like scorching hot and i didnt realize that until i had gulped a mouthful!!
Then off to the top of the Takas - i love that ride and Lissa was staying back as Tail End Charlie - thanks for that  and then down - that GN led all the way and we took off from the guys - sorry guys!!
Then home and I dont think I have ridden that much or that far for AGES and I absolutely loved it.
Thanks everybody for a wonderful day........:)
Hang on - I have already said that!!
Have a great day tomorrow

I was soo looking forward to the ride today, especially as the weather was so primo. Great crowd from all over - what a cool thing this motorcycling is huh? It has its downside too of course, I wouldn't have had to meet Cowboyz or Colapop if I didn't have my bike.
So I started the run leading the small cc & newbies group (ahem ... at the speed limit) and got into trouble for it from those behind when we got to the top of the hill! Sorry girls but I slowed when suddenly the last two disappeared. Wasn't really sure if we should wait or carry on ... so I did both. Now i know why the 'gentle' group left the top of the hill ahead of me!
The bandit and I were just getting aquainted having never ridden it before. It's interesting and does interesting things, I must talk to Shaz about her swingarm bush - but I digress. So when I was in front of either Elle or Lissa about halfway down and it started to squirrel a bit, I didn't get excited about it. On the next corner it really went nuts and I just about lost the back end. Sorry to whoever that was behind as I pulled left & braked without indicating. I was hanging on a bit at that point, didn't really have a spare thumb or braincell to assign to the indicator. The back tyre was so flat that the bead had popped into the centre of the wheel - this baby was going nowhere.
We called AA and we got the teen just out of school/tech/ITO who asked the following ...
- Is the vehicle Auto or Manual? Then added "oh no, it's auto isn't it"
- Don't you have a spare tyre?
When told we were 2km below the Rimutaka Summit
- Where in Rimutaka Forest Park are you?
- Oh, I see, you're on SH2?
- Are you near the Brown Owl? ("No, 2km below the summit" :brick:)
Where upon, we had to say no to every geo, political and manmade feature on her GIS picture (I believe about 22 in all) as she proceeded at walking pace across her screen following the road from Rimutex to the {gasp!} summit.
Was about 90mins when the bright red flat deck salvager arrived from Caterton (really nice guy and his wife if anyone knows them) collected us off the hill and took us to Rimutex where we could reintroduce some air into the tyre.
I had a sneaky suspicion that the borrowed bike might have had little air in in it and that I might have peeled the tyre sideways enough to dump all the tubeless air. In a way, I wish I had. I would have been a dork but I would have been able to ride home. We'd managed to get the tyre to seal on the rim just enough to pop the bead back but at 30psi, the 3cm slit we found right in the centre of the tread was letting it all out again.
Don't snigger class! Whatever I picked up was there when you went past it or was waiting for your tyre if I hadn't got it off the road for you. So we loaded it back on the truck and took it home. Oh BTW, the TSS emergency recovery number posted at the top of the Takas doesn't operate out of hours :(
I jumped on the bike and headed out to join you at Sels place. I saw some of you on the Paekak Hill Rd, some at the summit, a huge bunch of you coming down SH1 from P'ram and nobody at Sels place! Snarlers and coke all gone and no people either. Oh well, I was able to give Sels the tyre Panda back, have a natter, get a Kapiti Ice Cream at Lindale and go home.
Stupidly, I quite enjoyed the day. Another motorcycling adventure - albeit an expensive one. $80 for the towie (I thought AA payed that:angry:) and I guess it's going to be on me to replace the tyre. Its a Michelin so I guess that's another $200. Oh well

And believe it or not I actually stopped for him ... and waited with him ... and went home on the back of the cbr ... (I am so nice sometimes it kiils me) ... I guess it can pay sometimes to have a partner in the crowd :) .. looking forward though to riding me own bike on the next one.

Too nice to be faffing about with motorbikes Merv. Vicki and I spent a nice day strolling under trees besides babbling brooks and having a picnic from the back of the wagon. We came home to go for a kayak but decided to have a moi instead followed by a little BBQ - totally agreeable day!

Saw you on SH1 just outta P'ram so only just missed you at Sels.
Bad luck with the Suzuki loan bike, they can cause all sorts of problems when ridden by a Honda rider. Maybe they know something.
Sounds like you did a good job not crashing it as well, and avoiding the speeding girls behind you.
Hope to catch up at your BBQ this weekend.

Thanks Sels for the hospitality, Guess you didn't enjoy the BBQ that much being of vego orientation.
I really enjoyed meeting some of the people behind the names on KB, it was cool riding with so many other bikes of all types. An awesome sight. Great photos Merv and good to meet you and Mrs Merv. Moonshine Road was fun, last time I went through there it was shingle and my brother was trying to impress me with his rally driving skills. Fortunately we did not meet any cars but was I expecting one around all corners.
What a superbe day at the Pie cock lookout. ( how do you spell that dam name ) ELLE help, your the teacher, hey you can growl too, don't park yu bike in the wrong place, no no no, lucky you can't issue us with detentions. harr harrrr.
Lissa I think you have found your niche, its time to start organising the next ride, me thinks Hawkes Bay next time, we have some awesome roads, good wineries, waterfront bars, good weather usually, but not guaranteed.
Summer is going by to fast, its past the longest day by a good few weeks, gotta make the most of summer. Any interest !

You know how it is, we meet a whole lot of people, shake hands and swap names and except for those we've seen a few times, within 5 seconds you can't remember names any more and the real name, site name only confuses things. Maybe its just because I'm about Paul's age I'm starting to lose my memory, but I'll go back and have a look and see what I can add. It would help if those that were there remind me who they are where I leave question marks (?).

Doing better than I would, I'm shocking with names! I think the ? in the second pic is RWH, but maybe it's not, and Nige seems to think that it's rfc85 that he's talking to. Gonna have a look at the next pics.
Back, next photos, don't know but one fits Bonez's description of Ginga with beard. And again Nige seems to think the other question mark with wasp is RWH and rfc85.

On closed roads under controlled conditions of course, and to think even that is only 10+ km/hr of licence losing material. MD's thread on his feelings about enforcement hits the nail on this one. OK so they don't sound quite as quick as the DR250R I had nor the XR250L I have now as both will see 140 on the clock provided there is no head wind.

I only did 130kph once... or twice, because I was getting tired of people asking me what my bike got up to... so I blame everyone else. I'm on learners I should only be going 70.. which of course I do ALL the time. ;)

They top out at about speed huh?.... i had mine doing the same speed when i was taking it to its new owner, just wanted to see what it could do one last time.....:scooter: .... i also get questioned about the speed i do on the Triumph, one young arse wipe asked me once if i was still running it in?... the one thing i love about riding is, the smile on the face and the bullshit that is talked about at the other end....and im famous for it in these here parts....

Hmm I have to arrange another ride so everyone can be dazzled by my riding... think I should be the ride leader... and set the pace!! :Punk: A couple of ideas for the next ride are:
1. The REAL Wairarapa ride, where we actually end up in the Wairarapa... same thing, around Lake Ferry, to Martinborough for lunch (reminds me I better go apologise to the flying fish), and maybe Gladstone.
2. We ride up to annoy, I mean visit Yungatart and MSTRS.
3. We gather at Rimutex... ride up the hill, then back down again, then split up and go different directions following either Mr Kendog or Mrs Kendog, then invade Sels1 for a BBQ... Oh wait we already did this one!!!

Hey sounds good I'll be there, but all you need to do is set the meeting point somewhere in the 'rapa and then we'd have to make it over. A pretty good spot is Wild Oats at Carterton for morning tea then the ride proper could start. How's that sound?
