Don't what the fuss is about. It installs quicker and easier than XP, has an apple look and feel to it....you know lots of flash looking things that replicate functions you already have and just look 'nicer' rather than adding anything useful.

And costs you another $400 in the process..........for a flashed up version of XP :)

Why does everyone think Apple do all the innovations? They copied most of their original GUI from Xerox and HP and their new one owes more to the Linux community than their purchase of Steve Jobs' company.

Get a life!

That's like saying every bike maker has ripped off Gottlieb Daimler's ideas from the start.

And check your history. Apple licenced some components from Xerox's Palo Alto Research Centre's patented ideas.

And let's correct the misunderstandings here too - Mac OS X is NOT Linux. It's based on Berkely Unix.

Hello I'm an APPLE MAC HOMO, thats right I love my mac - in fact I love both my macs. My laptop is 6 years old and works just fine thanks, I have never had a single problem with it EVER....EVER.....

My new iMAC 20" 2GB, 500G HD, dual core is a rocket, comes with blue tooth wireless keyboard and mouse a built in camera and the most awesome operating system. Words fail me, and now I have to get back to work...on a RED HAT Linux...nearly as cool......

All of this was typed on a machine derived from either a apple 2le or a 8086.....dictated by 2 companies.....on an american std 101 keyboard....and using either a 1 or 3 button mouse.

Vista will become the defacto operating system, they will continue to maintain it, as they always have in the past.

Those same short memories forget that the average PC when XP came out had about 32-128MB of RAM... and XP runs like a dog on less than 256MB. Ghey old computers can't use the newest version of Windows... boo friggin hoo... that's nothing new either.

WMApparently not a very clever one. You're suggesting they 'revamp' the memory management in XP to handle say 256GB of memory?

Generally when MS release something the Mac community come out with "oh they nicked this off System 7, and they nicked this off OS X, blah blah". I'm pretty sure the OS X developers (did someone mention NEXT) had a damn good look at XP for ideas and you can bet top dollar they will have gotten hold of development code for Longhorn.

Xerox PARC employees worked for Apple. Apple employees worked for Microsoft. NEXT employees worked for Apple. etc etc.

And let's correct the misunderstandings here too - Mac OS X is NOT Linux. It's based on Berkely Unix.

Ok, so they nicked it from freeBSD.

So what's your point? My point was that they didn't innovate or develop as much as the Mac hippies make out?

Anyway...back to the real world where 95% of my work is sorting out Windoze PC's.

hmmmm....one of our staff that works from home called me to ask for a replacement PC as the old one is having problems....it's running windows 98 has 16MB ram and a 6GB hard drive. I think someone in the company 'forgot' to update her kit.

well this old dog is having difficulty learnin new tricks , I want to install quickly , dlown load all the tweaks I need by checking the boxes of stuff I need , Plug and play and I am a tight basket and will only give money to one man bands who are not in it for the money

I do use a windows computer ( lap top as I use Acad and cant be arse getting familier with any other software ..though I have CAE linux ..so we will see)

Ubuntu ...stable , works no prob ( codec I grant you BUT ,,,when I tried it in windows it was as bad ,,so ... the judge is out on that one adobe flashplayer is a pain to set up - for me ,,, and thats about it

Windows ,,,works ,,but its like getting a donkey to work .. it works . does everything you want ,,,but a tractor would be a liitle easier

As for upgrading to Vista ,,, No ,, I can get the same or nearly the same for free AND I can still use my clunky 10 year old computer ,,,,, ( 1100 Mb CPU ... to fast for u young whippersnapper!!!!!)

Oh and free to ... with support ,,,,

back to the real world where 95% of my work is sorting out Windoze PC's.

Jeez, do I really have to say anything?

On a positive side, I built, installed and configured a software router for home last night based on a Compaq Deskpro 4000 (Pentium 233MMX, 256MB RAM, 4GB HD, 2 PCI Ethernet cards) running an open-source firewall distro called SmoothWall (http://www.smoothwall.org/).

My Telstra HighSpeed works perfectly now on my entire network. Even on the Windows PC.

God bless *nix.

Though the price as a game console is a little scary, if you consider it a general purpose computer (Running Linux) the PS3 is a hell of a lot of bang for your buck. Will the PS3 be the nail in the Windows in a geek's home coffin? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3#Linux

I mean, what self respecting geek would buy Windows Vista when they can do all the geeky stuff on a PS3?

Okay, 256mb of ram..

Telstra Broadband has a fixed IP address.

You have to set the IP address on your PC manually to be the same as the router.

So no other computers can use the internet.

A router enables you to use more than one PC with the same connection.

If you're asking why all the PCs - because I'm a bit of a sad git, without a life, the bike is unregistered/unwarranted, I'm waiting on the new bike to arrive, and I've nothing much better to do.

How about http://www.64studio.com
Works better than XP, is free, specialised for digital content creation (aka music, movies and audio) and comes in 64 bit and 32 bit versions. I have it running perfectly on a dual Opteron, and on a 12 year old dual Pentium Pro.

Cripes man, computers are like bikes; you can never have too many. I was just wondering why you don't just bung them all on a 25 dollar unmanaged switch and use CUPs and SAMBA to get them all talking to one another.

They are on a switch . and the SME server is also the router/firewall interface to the cable modem. As Riffer sez, the cable modem gets you 1 static IP. SME spreads it around

OMG..no way. Apple have invented everything since the light bulb. That Torvalis chap and his chums must have copied some experimental Darwin code to create Linux. As for Steve Jobs, it was all a big cover up. Apple never really sacked him and Next was merely the R&D arm of the company.
