View Full Version : Big Night Out in Tokaanu

Wellington KBs, Quasievil has come up with a brilliant idea for a ride on October 16/17th. He's also done all the thinking and organising, and struck deals on accomm and meals. (See Waikato Rally thread) How about getting a posse to head North?
Tokaanu is about 4k west of Turangi (=middle of bleedin nowhere). The Oasis Motel/campground is basic and has outdoor hot pools and heated swimming pool. For some reason there are restaurants in the vicinity. I'm goin'
The journey North can avoid boring SH1 a lot of the time. How about the Paraparas on the way there and home via Vinegar Hill/Kimbolton?
You know it makes sense.

After all that stressful term-time work, what you really need is some time to yourself. Go on a retreat to help you refocus on what is important to you (no no, not that... study!) You will come back feeling revitalised and refreshed and ready to face new challenges. It will be the perfect opportunity to renew your energy and do some all important networking and gain some interesting new ideas to apply to your study
How was that??
I would be very keen to go BUT will be at a bike race near Melbourne......

Have you made arrangements for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights? That's the length of time we had planned to stay (ride up Friday and back on Monday). I haven't made any bookings yet, but had this on my list of things to do this week...

delighted to hear you and Mrs H are coming along, I really enjoy your posts and am looking forward to meeting your wife, she sounds like a real character, you two are very inspirational riding up from wgton, those heated handle grips will be useful I would imagine.
I'm such a wimp when it comes to the cold, I intend to get some better riding gear before embarking on my pretty little dinosaur. Does anyone have any thoughts about boots/footware, I need thick/chunky soles to aid my lack of leg length, I need to be able to sort of touch the ground whilst seated, I currently use hiking boots, but wonder what other vertically challenged people wear, my boots are comfy but not at all waterproof.
The proper boots have thin soles and are EXPENSIVE!

Mrs H falls loosely into the "vertically challenged" category. Her favourite biking boots are her Harley Davidson boots. They're not waterproof but are apparently very comfy and meet the need for thick/chunky soles you identified. They're also not that dear! White Trash should be able to fix you up with a pair...

Yeeeh c'mon Wellington. Gitcha moda runnin, headowdonda highway....
There is a rumour that Bondagebunny is coming along to demonstrate what s/he means by "Handcuffs are for friends. Rope is for fun. Chains are for excitement". Then Zed will call down lightening bolts and then we'll all have another beer. It will be, as Ms Lily says, a thigh slappin' hootenannie.

Hey Bung,
Myself & Jazbug5 are heading up, although we'll be in the scenic riders group but I think there a few other Wellington riders going. We can have a chat about it tomorrow night :)

You welly Guys and girls need to organise the rideup north, ie leave times etc.
I will be sending those coming a pack in the post with information so you can work around that.
Remember there are some slower riders coming to so need to account for them.

Sorry just realised I kinda repeated myself. :pinch:

If I can be cheeky enough to suggest a route.
Turn right before Levin, back road through Shannon to Pnth, to Waunganui over the parapara's up through National Park turn right (as If going to Whakapapa) come out at Tokaanu
That would be the best route with some windy stuff.
We will get to Tokaanu around 5pm so thats a good target, take you about 5 hours with stops.

Hey Quasi,
Have no idea what my roster will be on that weekend but I fear I may well develop an unusual flu disorder about that time coincidentally.
Per chance I do fall victim to such a virus may I meet up with ya'll? Now here's the dilemma. Whether to meet the Northern tribe in Tams or meet the Southern tribe in Waiouru (or wherever they may be... hmm). If gremlins get into any of your groups' bikes than your most welcome to utilise my sparse but reliable workshop facilities - use of ute to cart bike included (quick note: tidy up garage... it's a shithole).
I think I've actually got visitors staying that weekend but they're down from Hamilton and doing their own thing and nobody will be in anybodys way. I also offer my services as somewhat of a tour guide extolling the sights of this town.
I just can't ignore such a momentous occasion when I, being an active Kiwibiker member stay in one of the locations of your itinerary and which also happens to be the Mecca of Motorcycling, Tokaanu. Just like saying Haleys Comet is just another shooting star passing by, ain't it?
What say you Bwana?

Cool that CSL, Jaz and that are cruising up together but whos up for a late leaving time?
Say, depart Wellington Motorcycles at ssaaayyyy... 1pm. Coincidentaly that's about the time the ol' Trash man finishes work.
My route will go via Rimatuka Hill, Pahiatua Track, Wanganui, Paraparas. That sort of shit.
There will be minimal stopping as I'd like to arrive around 5-6.
Now, there's got to be some other nutter out there up for a fang?

Trestle table has been replaced by a more sturdy model, though built on a budget (zero dollars) no fear of collapsing wth this baby.
BTW what looks like a giant spoof stain is actually a small oil spill, had a bit of an absent-minded moment.

Kia ora Amigos. Sorry for being absent for a while. I'm going for the cruise option on Saturday with Ms Lily BungBung Jazbug etc. I'm coming back Sunday.
I prefer the Paraparas (via Wanganui) to SH1. Maybe us tourists should meet for a coffee sometime beforehand to point at maps, syncronise watches, learn the secret handshake....
Shame you're gonna miss it Lynda, we gotta meet sometime.
Looking forward to meeting you, Oh Mighty Chingster. I like the sound of the 'local guide' idea.

Hello McCool,
Yes I'd better seize this opportunity to meet other KBers. The only dilemma I have is whether to meet the Northerners and ride with them coming down or meet the Southerners and ride with them coming up... hmmm. I'm working on a way to help me make my decision. Watch this space.
