Where the fuck was emergency services? It seemed like a fairly busy road they were on.

Are you saying you can't see that there's a car directly in front of the red car?

The driver of the red car even gives a clue as to his intentions when he momentarily moves to the centre line in order to check the road ahead just as they come around the corner .

Pity the motorcyclist wasn't able to read that clue.

No, obviously i cant, because i already said, at least 3 car lengths in front of the red car, watch as hes crashing you can clearly see in front of the red car and there's no car except the silver one, and that's not directly in front?

But the point about the moving over thing is right

watch it again, but use play/stop to slow the frames down. At aprox 0.9sec into the clip when the red car pulls out you can see the car directly in front of it. Also, look at the shadow falling on the ground beside the car to the left - that isn't the silver car, which is at least three chain ahead.

It is deceiving, and I had to watch it a couple of times before I saw it. It's also a good reminder of how constantly diligent we as bikers have to be.

The driver of the red car even gives a clue as to his intentions when he momentarily moves to the centre line in order to check the road ahead just as they come around the corner .

You can also feel that the red car driver will overtake at the first opportunity as he is driving quite aggressively (lots of swerve, acceleration, braking), and he's quickly closing the gap with the car in front before overtaking. Plus, the car model and color should give a hint that the driver is more likely to be careless.

Note that, even if the driver has checked his mirrors, the biker was likely in blind spots or not very visible because he was too close both when following and when overtaking.

funny, he probably did check his mirrors, little did he know that little dot in the distance was travelling at a ridiculously high speed.

Kinda like if you checked your mirrors and saw a car in the distance, checked your blind spot then move lanes but find out that car in the distance wasnt doing sixty but one sixty instead.

problem here is the fuckwit flying past the queue of traffic.

yes to the fuckwit being largely at fault, although, it does seem a team effort really

Ragingrob

Checking your mirrors shouldn't be merely to see if anything is in a certain area, it should be to see if anything's there AND judge it's speed/actions.

Quite often I can find myself going past cars with a high-speed differential, e.g. cruising along the motorway when the left-lane is backed up for an off-ramp. I would like to think that the car pulling out cutting me off would be called the muppet and not I. But yes I would still prefer to slow down that little bit in order to maybe be able to avoid an accident if so-called muppet does pull out.

one of the survival skills of being a motorcyclist is NOT passing stationary/slow moving queues of cars with a high speed differential as that is a recipe for disaster rob.

have a gander at the 50 survival skills thread, lots of common sense in there that I agree with and that is one of them. It is difficult to judge motorcycles speed as most of the time we are just a dot of light in the mirror from a distance.

What if that was a car that pulled out in front of him though?

Depends. If the car driver checked his mirrors and blind spot and decided it was safe whilst unbeknownst to him the motorcycle was travelling at warp speed then I would state it is the bikers fault for riding unsafe for the conditions. On the other hand if the car just recklessly pulled out and the bike wasnt speeding or being stupid I would say it is the cars fault. If the car just pulled out recklessly and the bike was riding like a munter then I wouls say they are both at fault.

The situation doesnt change just becuase vehicle type does, the actions leading to an accident are what should lead to fault being found not whether you are on a moped, in a car, flying a blimp etc.

That said, it is never a good idea to go lfying past a queue of traffic regardless of the vehicles involoved.

What if that was a car that pulled out in front of him though?

it can be very hard to see passing bikes in your mirrors at night as they just look like a car pulling out to look.
In my opinion you need to pull to the white line on the far right of the road and nail it up to 200(3rd gear) to pass a line of cars, then you have room and less time exposed to danger.

Reckless
17th April 2009, 09:56
Well two other things I noticed, aside form the fact it was bloody dangerous to pass like that.
Firstly the guy overtaking didn't notice the guy pull out until real late, he was more than 1/2 way across when he got hit. The overtaker nut should have been paying way more attention!

Secondly he was so far across that if the overtaking twit hadn't locked it all up he could have probably have made it through behind him instead of taking him out!

Dunno if you guys agree but the twit needs shooting!!!!!

motorbyclist
17th April 2009, 11:11
both twits got what they deserved; the munter cruising up the side, while not going THAT fast, clearly wasn't paying much attention

meanwhile the munter who pulls out really should/could have had a better look, otherwise he wouldn't have pulled out at all

Ragingrob

Read my last sentence.

I still think that if the guy turning had checked his mirrors to gauge what the bike is actually doing he would've easily avoided the accident.

That "nutter" overtaker was only 50m or so away when the turner started turning.

If someone's in the other lane overtaking, they are obviously not pootling along at the same speed as the rest of the group, maybe it'd be a good idea not to pull out!

So in my opinion, the turner did not check his mirror at all. If he had, he would've seen a guy in the overtaking lane and even if you couldn't judge his speed it'd be stupid to turn in front of him without waiting to make sure that you know what he's doing.

When you pass a line of slow cars, don't you do it with a high speed differential if possible?

motorbyclist
17th April 2009, 15:12
right, looking at that again i don't think the guy actually checked his mirrors, and the guy passing up sthe side had enough room to dodge him if he hadn't panicked and locked up the rear

Indeed, but in that scenario where the rider has impacted at tremendous speedm the rider and most probably the driver/passenger of the vehicle has suffered extreme injuries/are dead.

Note the rider is lying with his his head close to the vehicle and in a pretty mangled pile....as a pedestrian what should one do? There is probably blood everywhere, an injured, dying or dead person in the car who might have horrific injuries.

Many pedestrians would panic, many would not want to touch anything for fear of cauding further harm.

In this instance what should someone do?

I would have check for signs of life, but after that? The motorcyclist is lying face down, now I've read the "how to remove a helmet" thread, but im sure that was for the possibilty of a lying on his back rider.

considering the speed that biker was doing i'd say it might not be entirely the cager's fault. In fact, i'd say it was entirely the biker's fault; even if the cager looked the bike would have been "ages" away when they initiated the turn, and at unexpectedly high speed they would have easily (and understandably) misjudged the speed of such a small, distant object.

then again, it always appals me at how cagers fail to guage the incoming speed of vehicles, including that of tucks they are pulling infront of.

well let's see - driver sees bike coming, mentally figures bike at 50kph is far enough away to give sufficient time to complete turn, BAM turned out the bike was doing 200, giving the driver only a quarter of that - and of course due to the excessive speed the biker barely had time to react, let alone avoid.

OR,

driver glances down road, no large object in view, goes for the turn, BAM - and of course due to the excessive speed the biker barely had time to react, let alone avoid.

biker was asking for it.

"if in doubt, power out" and "bail before you fail" are the two most important lessons any dirt rider learns. That and an uncanny ability to avoid trees at speed which translates into "traffic negotiation".

in all seriousness though, dirt riding has both prevented me from several road accidents (both single and multi vehicle) and when I have come off the road bike i've walked away unharmed.... touch wood

Not just you. The rider leans back showing they realised shit was about to happen, and the way the car then avoids hitting the buttress shows he was in control. Also the helpers reaction shows he also thought the car rammed the bike.

Had that happen to me once, we had just passed three cars and I had moved to the left to give the the other two bikes room, and one was still power on and passing me on my left...
It's almost a classic how not to, group riding video. Very small group admittedly. Inattention & too much front anchor = skittles.

2 second rule, gravel, watch where your going vid. Yamahas are tougher than O'ndas..

what?

from what i can see he's riding with his mate behind him (seen in right hand mirror), exits corner and then slams on brakes for no clear reason - I have no idea why he decided to stop.... Sympathy for the guy behind really; his other option was to dodge/pass and risk clipping the other rider

Ditto on the sympathy. Hard to say from the vid but it certainly looks like it could be gravel on the road, lead rider brakes fairly hard as you would with an oncoming car taking up your exit strategy, rear rider seems to take an age to brake himself & quite possibly hits the gravel on the brakes causing the wash out.
Possibly. Maybe.

5th May 2012, 22:25
I've never done anything like that nor will I ever likely, so I have to ask: In a situation like that when you find your front end is dipping down - which I assume is not ideal - is there anything you can do before you land? Use your upperbody and arms to pull the handlerbar towards yourself as hard as you can to lift the front end up?

For those experienced in this sort of stunt, did it seem like there'd be enough time to be able to correct for that front end dipping like that?

use of throttle and brake to start or stop wheel rotation can help to rotate the bike back or forward, but it usually has a reasonably minimal effect, and besiddes its pretty much always gonna end bad when you miss the ramp and land to flat

yeah, not a great thing...aparantly theres a roaring trade going on with theives out in rural and provincial areas stealing bikes
to feed the inner city bike craze.

apart from the stolen bike bit, which i abhor...i dont really know what to make of it all, i mean its great people enjoying bikes
and apart from gang life, basketball, rapping and any other stereotypes there's probably fuck all for them to do...

Looks like he has run off into the gravel and clipped the barrier, and as a result the bike has caught alight----Bike is a write off and his insurance does not cover the accident.

Unfortunately, the reality is, 97mph on a public road is putting way too much trust in those using the road you're on.
An utter waste of someone who had no respect for himself or anyone else on the road at that time, will it make anyone change their riding style? I doubt it.

I feel for the driver of the car. 29, two kids, sole breadwinner. In his statement apparently said he saw nor the biker nor the silver car.

And as a result gets convicted on a 'causing death' charge simply because the biker was doing warp 9.

Doing 97mph is foolish, and plenty of us are foolish. Doing it coming up to a major junction, oncoming traffic galore, with no room for error and no exit strategy whatever, is just.....

I don't really agree. If I had seen this video 30 years ago (on VHS), when I would have considered 97mph to be slow, it might have been the wake up call that I needed. Fortunately for me, I learnt from the mistakes of others and survived those days.

I hope that many will benefit from this video, as it shows what we see foolish riders doing every day.
